Another Win For Mac Gaming: Assassin's Creed Shadows To Hit Macs on Day One of Release

Gaming on Mac has been in somewhat of a weird situation lately. On one hand, there seems to be a ton of true AAA titles making their debut on macOS, but on the other hand, sales on the platform have been extremely disheartening in many of the cases. Now, it has been revealed that Assassin's Creed: Shadows, which is set to debut on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation on the 20th of March, will also be available for Mac users on the same day. While that may sound like great news for interested folks, there is a catch - like many of the titles, AC Shadows will be available exclusively on the Mac App Store for a cool $70.

And this is exactly where we hit a major roadblock. For whatever reason, Steam will not include binaries for both Mac and Windows platforms, forcing people with both Mac and Windows PCs to buy the expensive game for both the systems - and this, in my opinion, is the major reason why adoption has been poor. There are plenty of folks with both Macs and PCs - but getting them to pull the trigger for the same game two times is a hard sell. According to the App Store, the game will be playable on Macs powered by the M1 and higher SoCs, and needless to say, support for modern ray tracing goodness will be limited to M3 onwards. It is unclear, as of this writing how the performance is going to be, but there is no denying that the GPUs found on the Pro, Max, and Ultra SoCs in recent years are more than capable of handling even the most demanding of titles with playable framerates.

A game from a long running very stagnated game series, coming to Mac in the hopes of shipping some units is not exactly a win.

For whatever reason, Steam will not include binaries for both Mac and Windows platforms, forcing people with both Mac and Windows PCs to buy the expensive game for both the systems

Blame Apple lol, they want their cake and to eat it too. If they could go back and make Mac just like ios or ipad for every software they would love to so they sure won't open the precedent with gaming where they can still limit things.

Considering it's launching on the iPad and Amazon Luna as well, they are really clutching at straws here.

And as for performance...

It's there in the description. From my understanding, the Hideout is an interior location/hub. On the selective (limited) preset only this place will use RT GI. The standard preset will also apply RT outside in the open.

Yhea, it seems that those native Apple silicone games are app store only, If they get more games, regulators might take a closer look into that

I don't think most Mac users care about gaming, at least not in the sense of buying a Mac with gaming as the primary use case. It's more of a "hey, why not?" kinda thing, or just a curiosity to see how well an M-chip can play a game title. As a long time Apple user, the last time I really tried gaming on a Mac was with a Dual G5 PowerMac with a GeForce 5300! Beyond something like SimCity4, I haven't done any more. It's far easier to buy a console or build a budget gaming rig.

I smell Ubisoft's desperation to sell the game to as many people as possible before they conclude what a flop it was.

Nah, chief. Apple's been doing things differently these days. The decision to not support Steam on Mac is entirely on Ubisoft. Agree on your first statement though

I have MBP 14" with M4Pro CPU. I use it closed with external display. The macbook is placed in a stand, so it stays vertically.
When running not so demanding game (total system power consumption around 35W) MacOS kills the game after about 1 hour of gameplay due to macbook overheating.
Assasins creed is a more demanding game, so i guess you could play 30mins before it got killed lol

I use it closed

That's probably why, it has a closed bottom and the only air vent is the one below the display, which is blocked off when the Mac is closed.

You know you've sunken deep when you announce an AC game as a win for Mac gaming.

Lol. Yeah, in a barren wasteland, an oasis of pee is absolutely drinkable.

What the hell is selective ray tracing and standard ray tracing.
They'll handpick the scenes where they can run RT without diving to 4 FPS.

The 30 fps is a bit of a joke, but aside from that grumbling about a an AC game seems to be a kneejerk reaction just because it's from Ubisoft.

it'll be most likely a pretty decent game. At least judging on the strength of the last 3 big AC's, all of which are quite good.

It's not because it's from Ubisoft. It's because all of the latest AC games have essentially been the same game in a different skin (literally). Ubisoft has dug their own grave.
