Anyone born in the 70s? Remember how good the 90s games were?

This post isn't for only people born in the 70s. I was born in 75. I remember playing sierra games back in the day. I am probably looking through this with rose colored glasses but man I have fond memories of games in the 90s and early 2000s. I was 18 years old in 1993. That is when I got into pc gaming on my own computer. Before than in 1989 it was kings quest on my school buddies computer.

Games seem like they were made great back then. But I am sure good stuff is coming. I guess I just miss being young a long time ago and how everything back then was fresh.

My fav game from the early 90s was Warlords 2. What was yours and why?

Born in 1962. Started out gaming in 1980 on an Atari 2600. In 1985 I bought my first computer, a C64. Amazing times with that computer. Discovered not only better gaming but taught myself programming and going online on BBS. It wasn't until the mid 1990s that I bought my first IBM compatible.

There were so many true classics from the 90s. Just a few that come to mind:

Alpha Centauri
Fallout 1 and 2
Unreal
Half Life
Command & Conquer
Doom 1 and 2
Quake 1 and 2
System Shock 2
Duke Nukem

There were a lot more also. Some of these I still replay every once in a while. The game that I have played the most over the years was Alpha Centauri. Thousands and thousands of hours in that game since 1999. There was a lot that I could do using the built in tools and it just never became old and boring.

Born in 1971 but my PC Gaming was the 80s. Space Racer, Silpheed, Kareem vs Bird. There was also a spy Game side stroller that was sweet. I also discovered Zeliard and there were so many Sierra Games I was into (Japanese Ports) and Budokan was the first Fighting Game I played at home. My love for Japanese Games put me on the PS platform from the PS1 until about 2003 when I bought my first Gaming PC. I did play the snot out of my Dreamcast though.

C64 was the best when you would be outside playing baseball and it started raining. I loved Epyx Wrestling and that racing Game that had tire wear.

These games got me into computers and games before I even knew how big that world was. I remember first hearing the tone (not song) on my old clone pc when I started up dig dug. Now I’m here.

I can literally still count the notes from memory

Born in 1970 and there's a reason why System Shock (the original one) is my favourite game ever (and one I also helped kickstart the remake of). Of course, there's also Doom and Quake. PC gaming only really started to take off in the early 90s due to good graphics and sound cards being released then.

That being said,I had the great fortune and pleasure of essentially witnessing the advent of (home) computer gaming back in the early 80s. Got my C64 back in 1984 (anyone remember Beach Head?). Had a TI-99/4A before that and first an Amiga 500, then an Amiga 2000 before I got my first PC in 1992.

That was Pitstop. I had that game. Your tires would turn orange and you had to go in for a pit stop. For anyone curious what a racing game looked like back in the early 1980s:

I used my old joystick from my Atari 2600 with my C64. It's laughable to younger folks but we made do with a joystick with only one button.

Atari 2600. Centipede, space invaders and pit stop where some of my favorites.

A little later down the road Zelda was captivating!

And of course Contra was a go to for fast action.

PC Wolfenstien 3D was my Favorite.

From 1993 here, but I've always played video games from the 8/16 bit and home computer eras. What fascinated me the most is how developers skillfully made use the limited hardware resources to create timeless classics.

I'm fairly sure this is the most impressive game on the Amiga

The second stage of this game always impressed me, sound and graphics

King of shmups to this day in my opinion:

One of the most difficult from my childhood and the pilot for the CPS, this is a game whose post-apocalyptic ancient Egypt/baroque aesthetics I've only come to appreciate only in my adulthood

Still can't beat it all these years later... there are more to share later :)

What we're missing is the entire genre of adventure games, where you had to walk around and type questions to NPCs.
Was a great way of learning English as a teenager.

OP, you were eligible for booze and bacco purchases in Europe even before I was born. '95 here.

Almost never do I play games older than me but I do enjoy games from late 90s (Worms 2 and derivatives, Starcraft, GTA II, etc). Pre-1995 games are superb though: you don't expect 10 kilobytes to be that entertaining after witnessing a 120 gigabyte game being a complete waste.

Coming from the NES, its looked so incredible !
LHX Attack Chopper, Sim City, i thought theses games were for adults people back then, so complicated :)
I was starting my gaming jouney with Super Mario Bros. and Tetris
Neighbor have some old computers, didn't recall the name, ZX Spectrum ? something like that, we were playing Cauldron on it
I really got the PC virus in '98.

I started gaming on my first own computer in '99 and have never played many classics, but know well the past from various sources focusing on retro. The farer from now to the past, the less complex games were and it resulted in more bad than good ways. E.g. good gameplay have been a must, because games haven't had as many things as today to shine with instead. On the other hand simplicity goes with repetitiveness. The more we go into opposite direction, future, the more capabilities games get. That's why my point is nowadays and future games have opportunity to be the best ever thanks to hardware allowing for more and more ambitious ideas, but also devs learning from the past, improving formulas shown by great games. AAA gaming landscape dominated by repetitive sandboxes and games as a service (GaaS) is a different topic. Or demise of whole genres like FMV or point'n'click, but with "forgotten genres" indie market got you rather well covered.

I'm from 1986.. got into gaming proper with the SNES, but the older games and systems were around, everywhere, and I played on many a friend's vintage PC. The first PC I owned was a Toshiba Satellite handmedown from my dad's work that ran 3.1 and later one that ran W95. Jazz Jackrabbit, Wolfenstein 3D and discs full of shareware... and just screwing around on a PC and working around the many errors and bugs. Good fun. Also yeah, Sierra. Caesar was my first city builder and boy was it awesome. Red Alert... Freespace... yeah. They all left a mark. School days were full of entire classrooms with PCs running UT'99 when the teacher was away. A few years later... WC3, custom mapping, Dota, I think that's really where the new age of gaming started. Things went online and just worked. The troll was invented, and the escalation of online conversation basically was tried and tested in early Bnet. The nerd rage. The hilariousness. All those chatrooms where people would just get kicked for whatever nonsensical reason. I'll never forget it.

I stumbled across HoMM2 and I think that's when I got addicted to this nonsense for good. I can still dream that game and also play it from time to time. Its still fun. It still works. It still immerses. That soundtrack and ambient effects... glorious. Even to this day no game has managed to get to that level - Songs of Conquest right now is getting close, but it still lacks that magic. And I think that's the nostalgia factor entirely. Its the same thing as with music. At some period in your life you're open to picking up all that stuff and then that's what you're stuck with, you'll be comparing everything to it.

I'm from 89 and I've started gaming on a 486 with games like Stunts/Prehistorik/Terminal Velocity and then Worms Armageddon. 'played it with my friends both in the school and then later at home instead of studying:laugh:'
I've also spent an unhealthy ammount of time playing Carmageddon 2/original Unreal Tournament/Mortal Kombat 4 later on but I think what got me addicted and sealed the deal was Diablo 2 in my late elementary school years. 'I've got seriously addicted to that damn thing and then played it actively for 7+ years..'
Ofc I've also played the usual stuff like Duke Nukem 3D, Need For Speed,Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Red Alert 2 etc. 'also loved a game called Imperium Galactica 2, made by a developer team from my country'
