This post isn't for only people born in the 70s. I was born in 75. I remember playing sierra games back in the day. I am probably looking through this with rose colored glasses but man I have fond memories of games in the 90s and early 2000s. I was 18 years old in 1993. That is when I got into pc gaming on my own computer. Before than in 1989 it was kings quest on my school buddies computer.

Games seem like they were made great back then. But I am sure good stuff is coming. I guess I just miss being young a long time ago and how everything back then was fresh.

My fav game from the early 90s was Warlords 2. What was yours and why?
basically the decade of the CRPG
all the DnD games like eye of the beholder and BG
Kings Bounty
Fallout
and my personal favorite, Lands of Lore

I was mostly gaming on CD-i in the 90s.... On a Philips widescreen TV.

On my parents PC, Supaplex and SimCity.

I wasn't much into PC's back in the 90s.
I had several other hobbies, Music, dolby surround set, CD-i games/movies,
RC cars, 1/10 electric , 1/8 Gas 3.5cc Nitro offroad and a FranzGroschl 1/5 Gas 26cc with a weight of 10Kg and 100cm in length with slick tires...

Late 70s kid here. It was Quake II, hands down. The SP game was okay (played through it dozens of times at least), but it was so revolutionary when going from software mode to accelerated with Glide (my Voodoo 3 2000) or OpenGL. I logged ridiculous hours of MP on it, playing it for years and years. I made and published 15 MP maps for the game too.

I also have a fondness for Super Mario World, which I feel was peak Mario in terms of play-ability, graphics, and Easter-eggs. I can still impress my kids by getting through Special Star World and finding all the Secret areas. :D

1960 here  From the 90's the stand out games for me were "the Chaos Engine" by the Bitmap Brothers Studio, loved that game and played it on the Commodore Amiga CD32 in 93 I think The Chaos Engine - Wikipedia and for PC probably Command & Conquer" in 96.

There are good games this days, but there are rare. Back when i got in to gaming in '99 up until about 2014, there were a couple of great games coming out each year, instead of one every few years, like it is now.

Larry Laffer,
Summer games,
Winter games,

Prince of Persia
and a lot more.

In that time i owned a Olivetti M20 (with a 10MB full size HDD, a 5,25" Floppy and a integrated monitor). Much faster than a C64. But no games available. So i had to develop and program my own ones. When i had finished one there where new ones on the market i did want to try. So i had to develop again.

In the 90s (and I think 00s to a degree as well), I feel more thought was put into games how they play, more risks were taken by the industry on new ideas, and the market reflected that.

I wouldnt say it all went to pot at any point instantly, but there has been a gradual shift of the following.

Towards online gaming.
Sticking to successful idea's and brands.
Less risk taken on new ideas.
Game as a service model.
Reduction of games released.
Removing parts of games to utilise for promotional purposes, often time exclusive to get access to content. (especially the case in eastern market).
Releasing broken or incomplete games, and patching it up later. (not saying earlier games were problem free, but bugs typically werent as visible and numerous).
One company has success with a game, then other publishers/developers then make a cloned game under different name story etc. Right now we have lots of dark soul and DMC clones. We still get lots of shooter clones and probably will continue doing so.

I played this often at a friend's house, but for some reason I remember it being called Red Baron.

Colossal Cave Adventure on my Dad's Osbourne was the first computer game I remember playing. I also recall some early ascii text dungeon game on the same system, but can't remember the name. I got really into roguelikes a few years later, in the late 80's - early 90's.

Brother and I did a lot of Appletalk LAN multiplayer stuff around that time. Minotaur - Marathon I/II - Spectre - Bolo - etc.

Definitely played the crap out of Warlords II, Kings Bounty, Simcity, all the Sierra games, Star Control, MoO, and other stuff already mentioned :)

Special shout out to Escape Velocity!

Switched from Mac to PC about 95'ish. Mostly flight sims and Action Quake.

Oh the days of IRQs and kbs of RAM. Comanche required a boot disc to free up enough RAM to run.

I still play Warzone 2100 (available as freeware) almost every day.

Just remembered Harpoon and felt a tinge of guilt for leaving it out.

Also the Avalon Hill mail order magazines that I spent nearly as much time perusing as playing.

Which reminds me of the Advanced Squad Leader based game: Close Combat. The first one was so unstable I don't think I ever made it through the campaign... but 3 and 5 still had active modding communities last I checked (~10 years ago).

I heard good things about neverwinter nights on AOL. One of the first MMOs. Must of been revolutionary back in the early 90s to see a multiplayer game that early on.

Yeah back before the web, GENIE was king of the online services in regards to gaming. Too rich for my blood though, it was like 10$/hr + long distance charges. We did have AOL and compu$erve accounts though.

Atari 2600. Centipede, space invaders and pit stop where some of my favorites.

A little later down the road Zelda was captivating!

And of course Contra was a go to for fast action.

PC Wolfenstien 3D was my Favorite.
You were not a 2600 owner unless you had Pitfall and Skiing.

I am actually surprised no one mentioned the one that started it all in Diablo. Even though 2 was better in every way. It is insane that it took like 15 years to bring Diablo 3. The problem for that is since Diablo 2. There have been spectacular ARPGs since then. There was a Game called Interceptor that was a 4X but had the coolest merch in the box with unit cards for all ships in the Game.
