I would think that only adding a switch to select the VBIOS is not enough.
Can you find the datasheet for the VBIOS chip and see if a pull-up or pull-down resistor is needed on a chip-select pin?

I've modded my Vega 56 Nano from single BIOS to dual BIOS, by adding the missing switch, extra BIOS chip & moved a jumper, but the second BIOS is still not working. I've made an error somewhere so as soon as I have the second BIOS up & running I will post photos what I changed to convert card from single to dual BIOS. ...I just know it's got something to do with pin 1 or pin 3 why the second BIOS is not recognized/detected
cant wait to see this. :toast:

I've more or less figured it out. There's a disconnect on pin 3 on the second new BIOS chip. There seems to be something else missing when the BIOS switch is flicked to enable the second BIOS. ...I'm now 90% confident the second BIOS will be up & running next time I take the card apart to fix the issues..

I do believe I will be the first person to carry out such a mod which should have been easy, but I miss a few things..
If & when I get it working, it can be applied to any card as long as the second BIOS pads are present.

@Jacky_BEL

You are clever, it looks like you are right. Something looks like it needs to be pulled-down, awaiting confirmation, & if so, I know where it is. .

All missing parts has been added (filled-in). ..I configured the resistors incorrectly & I think one value is incorrect, but I'm fairly confident I can correct this & have second BIOS up & running soon.

UPDATE: For the first time second BIOS is up & running. I can now get to the boot screen which I could never do before. Configuration jumpers will be different to any other Vega 56 (including Nano cards) & will remain so. ...This is personal preference for my card only.

EDIT: What I have learned from this, any card can be modded to included a second BIOS provided the second BIOS pads are present.

EDIT2: Should be able to do this on motherboards too, provided the second BIOS pads are present.

you can flick the bios switch while the PC is running with no problems.
it won't switch to the other bios (since it only gets initialized once when the PC boots) but this is helpful to to get a bricked bios flashed without a second card.

Second BIOS validated & working & seems to be working better than the original BIOS on the other side of the card.. ..NOTE: Second BIOS is config ever so slightly differently to the BIOS on the other side of the card. I guess there isn't a standardized way the manufacturers implement this VBIOS switch feature, so yes it depends on the manufacturer.
But lets assume these are designed by intelligent people, so that there will always be just one VBIOS selected, no matter what position the switch is on, or even when the switch gets broken.
This must somehow be done by a logic circuit, which translates switch position to VBIOS selected
Indeed, ideally one safe bios is locked and harder not impossible to reflash while the performance one is flashable.
The switch could break so as neither bios is readable if there are dual connected bios ROMs with the switch enabling power to the selected one ?! But I have not needed to DVM that area ever so it might work different?!.

Hi,
That's not how evga says to do the switching

Power down/ unplug from power source then switch it you might even hold the power button down for 30-45 seconds to so all power is drained.
Then reinstall driver.
Seems same as cmos reset process.

i know. but that does not help at all when you have (for example) a bricked bios.

I like when this happens!

When something changes I always ask myself why. This is why the second BIOS is setup slightly differently (in hardware) to the first BIOS on the same card. ..why, why was this changed, & this is what I found out.

SOFT RESET: Same firmware

BIOS 2 > BIOS 1 computer starts.
BIOS 1 > BIOS 2 fail to start, but if computer is turn off via the power switch, then turned on again BIOS 1 will work flawlessly.

What I'm trying to say here is, I can throw anything I like at the second BIOS in any order & computer will always start.
BIOS 1 on the other hand gives the impression it can do rare random hang even thou I have not change anything to affect it. Nothing has changed, it all original parts & I can't see a simple toggle switch affecting it.

..So yeah, the simple change I made to the second BIOS works better than the first BIOS the card came with. ..It's a simple resistor value that has changed.

Not sure if I want to take the card apart again just to take photo of what I did, but I like to point out there are two routes how to add/configf the second BIOS. I have used the unconventional route not the official route used by the manufactures. Both set of pads are there, so you have a choice how you want it to switch between the two BIOS.

Anyway here's a clear cut photo of the BIOS switch I soldered in to make it work. If you look carefully between the gap you can just about see Ultra High End "extremely expensive" input capacitors (colour yellow).

There's two bios chips on the card. each of them has a "Chip Select" pin (called CS). The switch will put a voltage on CS of one of those two chips, and the other CS has no voltage, depending on the switch position

Here's a modern up-to-date GFX card taken from this page MSI Radeon RX 6900 XT Gaming X Trio Review - Circuit Board Analysis | TechPowerUp . If your going to mod this card please wait until it is out of warranty.

Please note I do not own this card but this is where I suspect the second BIOS should be. Tap this out, some of the pins should be mirrored with the other BIOS chip on the other side of the board.

I have marked out where I think the second BIOS should be "red box". in photo below. I don't know where the BIOS switch is, but you can trace this out, it must be there somewhere. You may have to config the second BIOS by adding the missing resistor(s).
You will have to remove & discard a 0 ohms resistor, it should be there somewhere so that a toggle switch can work..

THIS IS JUST AN EXAMPLE THAT MOST OLD & NEW GFX CARD CAN BE FITTED WITH A SECOND BIOS, BUT NEVER DO THIS TO A GFX CARD THAT'S IN WARRENTY.

You can even solder a 2nd BIOS chip (or stack multiple) right on top of the original one, which wires them up nicely with power and logic.

Disconnect the CS pin from the original chip and hook it up to your switch (remove solder on the pin and bend it up a bit, add tape below)

Yeah, you could do that, but it would look very untidy with lots of wires. I can bet LN2 uses don't care., but I like a professional look (sometimes)..

Look at posting 34 photo carefully.
That's the latest 820uf capacitors from Panasonic (binned). I soldered them in, in such a way, no-one will notice, clean semi-pro finish.

What did you find out about the X bracket and washer mods? What's wrong with the bracket?

This is what I think is wrong with it, but I am unable to confirm because I can't find my spare old x bracket.

The dimples or the four holes near the centre, do you think it's there for fashion, style or cost cutting. If you can cut-out holes & make the bracket lighter, then they are saving money, plus with the material saving, you can have an extra one, For example every 25 bracket that is made, but this is not the problem.

What I discover is when I was putting the Vega 56 back together, I found it very easy to push down on each arm with little to no effort. Now when It come to the x bracket on the R9 Nano, It a real tuff struggle to push down on the opposite arm to get the screw in.

Long story short, the old bracket is stiffer, stronger & certainly adds more mounting force pressure on the die.. If found to be true,, then this is better than the washer mod as it prevents user from stripping screw holes & killing they cards by short circuit when capacitors are to near the hole.

No-one should try this until I have tested old bracket on new cards as you can't just swap them over.

1. The new bracket may have a very thin clear insulator plastic along each arm. This needs to be transferred to the older X bracket to prevent short across the capacitors.

2. The inner four rubber/plastic on the old X bracket maybe taller giving extra mounting pressure, so you need to be careful here as too much can crack the die.

3. There maybe no advantage whatsoever if you have the extra mounting pressure, thermal paste may spread thinner thou, which is a good thing..

4. I don't know if the older x bracket will fit. Just have to wait until I find my spare to test.

NO-ONE IS TO TEST ABOVE X BRACKET MOD UNTIL I HAVE DONE THE TEST.

FINAL NOTE: I could swap the x bracket around between R9 Nano & Vega 56 Nano, but I don't really want to be messing around with two cards when I know I have a spare old x bracket somewhere..

Sounds like all the Sapphire Pulse and BE cards along with their Nvidia Twin Brand Zotac can have these mods

@delshay just a advice, when you show pictures like this on forums, make it more easy and mark with paint or smartphone itself what we need to look at, its so anoying for people to find in pictures between millons of transistors or any others pictures what exactly you trying to show us.

I mean is very easy for you just to put a mark on you picture, and more easy for all of us to detect what you trying to show us, just like you did on you last picture

Otherwise very nice job here.

RED BOX: That's the second BIOS that has been added.
YELLOW BOX: That's the filter capacitor for the second BIOS chip 100uf. I have not fitted this as it get's in the way of External Programmer.
TWO LARGE GREEN BOXES: Those 820uf capacitors are not normal for any GFX cards. Utilized for the first time on this GFX card..
BLUE BOXES: X bracket that came with this card maybe wrong, awaiting update, see here PowerColor Radeon RX Vega Nano Pictured | TechPowerUp
