I see this as the same situation as 7970 GPU, its currently the king of GPU's hence there is a nice premium on top of how much it should really cost. The new iPad is in the same boat, although for iPad it's not about having more of this or that its more about how much bigger their user base is and it is apple, we have more than 10 branches of apple reseller/service stores here in Sydney AU so the support they have for these products are godly compared to others trying to get into the market.

I may actually think of getting me one of these for convenience purposes, it'd be nice to have but it'll depend on my budget.

I'm one of these guys that won't buy it on principle...

However, I'm very happy to see this. Beautiful display, good battery life and the price is not astronomical.

I hope this will cause some more proper fight in this market now.
Not based on lawsuits, but innovation and value for money.... WHOA !!! I've just woken up... It's all going to be lawsuits and huge money changing hands based on crap patent law.

But the new iPad doesn't cost any more then the last iPad cost when it launched. The 6970 launched at like $370 and the 7970 launched at $550 (at least according to the Anandtech launch day reviews 1 2). So are you really paying a premium for the latest tablet when this years model launches at the same price as the last generation, which launched at the same price as the first generation when AMD is charging almost $200 more for their new GPU compared to their last generation?

You can tell their lawsuit losses are mounting. The price isn't 500 for the cheapest one.

HD display on an OS that pisses me off and that's made by crooks or 1280x800 on one that I love (android)?

Nope, still won't and never will give them a dime.

Well I'm impressed that the Apple site is handling all the bandwidth for the promo video http://www.apple.com/ipad/#video

Device looks great. Hires, improved apps, camera and video recording.

Ultimate PDF reader.

Now I just have to find a way to slave it to the PC as a second screen.

But will it play my flashbooks? Awweeeooohhh wah!

I think I'll get one anyway. Great "all family" device.

2048 x 1536 is impressive, but 4:3 is not. Black bars anyone? Pathetic mistake by Apple.

Specs are alright, my mind isn't blown. Tablets are still useless to me. No flash = no money from me.

That's because iPad seems to have always been on top since its release, if AMD's 6970 was significantly faster than the GTX 580 it'd be priced over 500-600 as well, GPU wise the competition is a 1v1 duel so of course in those terms the prices will fluctuate alot more but tablet wise we still haven't seen a tablet that is as widely marketed since the release of iPad 1, many claimed to be "iPad Killers" but only apple did the killing in the end :S.

Still see these as a market for casual folks or professionals. I know older folks not that computer literate that would love these things, and then I know some businesses that do too. But, I also saw how badly they implemented these at my work last year. Lot of complaints and in the end they just went back to doing things the old way.

I've been saving up, sold my old tablet and netbook. Going to buy the 32GB in black as soon as Target has them (I've got up to 20% off at Target) and I'll love it. It's going to be magical.

What are people's thoughts on cases for this thing? I saw that the only different dimension is a few millimeters in thickness. Would some sort of back shield for iP2 still work on this?

Also just so I'll know ahead of time, what do I need to do to get a MKV to play on iOS?

Adobe has already abandoned flash on mobile devices themselves. So don't expect to be opening your wallet anytime soon. Adobe has shifted focus to HTML5 and creation of tools that will allow their flash content to be converted into the universal standard...HTML5. Apple seemed to have been right all along not to waste resources on technology that was clearly on its way out.

Which is great because HTML5 is far superior to Flash.

True. But a lot of legacy material requires rebuilding or gets lost.

Also, all those nice PDF-2-flash documents on websites are unusable. Shame, because at 2048x1536, the iPad3 would have made the perfect PDF reader.

1m² = 1m x 1m
2m² = 2m x 2m
Surface area in this case increases by 4. The power needed to render and process increased surface/pixels is simply way too much to justify squeezing it into a 24 inch monitor.

To put it bluntly, tell me how the hell this image would benefit from more pixels

http://www.pcgameshardware.com/screenshots/original/2009/07/Crysis_Downsampling_6400x4000_10.jpg

Correction: 2m² = 1.4142m x 1.4142m

And your link doesn't work. If we can get 6400 x 4000 on a 27" monitor, I'll be very happy with it. AND you can't make a case about resolution using our current monitors, given that what we can see is already limited by our current resolution...

I still dont get it how people believe this Apple PR shit. How is 2048 x 1536 impresive? Toshiba released its 2560 x 1600 6.1" display last year already. Thats 495dpi! So somebody explain to me, how anything that Apple makes is impresive and über and whatnot?

This many pixels in such small screen is actually pointless. It just has bad effect - bigger resolution mean bigger stress on GPU portion and in games and such will require much more powerful hardware. Since the hardware is powerful for about 900x480 like resolution when it s more than double it will suck big time. And people eyes wont make big difference from 720p to bigger resolution. If it was CRT type screen more pixels is always a good thing, but with physical pixels not so much I think.

Too bad you can't find it anywhere. And that resolution in a tablet for $499 coupled with good hardware is kinda sweet.

I'd rather get the Asus or Samsung tablets with the 1920x1200 or 1920x1080 screens.

Where can I find those? The only ones I know about are 1280x800 or 1366x ... whatever it is.

Rejoice, for the Holy Apple has once again released a groundbreaking, trailblazing product!

Much praise to the Blessed Company! We are once again heavenly graced by its Light! Blessed are those that live the Words of the Holy Apple!

May the non-believers finally repent in the face of this beacon of enlightenment, to further make this world a better place for all of us, in the name of the Holy Apple, the Blessed Company and our Lord Steve Jobs.
