My vote goes to HL2

The variety of good gameplay, clarity of graphics, and level design give it the edge in my eyes.

I don't play CS or CS:S, and I didn't care for the orig. HL all that much either.

I also put Far Cry as runnerup.

Interesting how the question is for the past 5 years and the answers are for the past year.

I've only played pc games since 1999-2000, among my 100+ pc games HL2 & Far Cry are my personal favorites.

I haven't gotten FEAR yet, just played the demo so far.

I know these were released before 2000, but I still think HL1 and it's mods are the best games around. Virtually everybody can play them because of the weak graphics. Sure it's not the most complex game or anywhere near impressive graphics, but there's just something about it you just can't help but love. I had a LAN party last night, the slowest system there was a 2400+ XP with 1.5gb ram and a GF4 TI4200; so we we're all capeable of playing any modern game. But what were we playing? CS 1.6.

Multiplayer = Delta force 2 online, great maps for all types of players. You wanna snipe sure 1200m easily, wanna assault go for it, the only downside, no vehicles, does not really affect the game too much though,

Single player = dunno loadsa good games in the past 5 yrs, max payne was awsome when it first came out, some of the Xcom games, battle field 1942 was awsome as well. dunno could probably go on for ages lol :)

Well talking about how good HL2 and CS:S are, does anyone else have as big a problem as me when you have to use Steam to play these games? I'm sorry but bundling all the games you buy into an application that has to sign you on to the internet before you can play them (can't play if you don't have internet), plus making it the most unstable application ever built for playing these games (I have NEVER gotten past the first level of HL:2 and have never been able to like CS:S because they shut down right as you start getting into the game, usually when you start having fun, from about 2 to 30 minute intervals of freezing and shutting down for no reason) and giving you no alternatives pisses me off. Steam still hasn't been fixed and it's been about 2 years it's been around. There needs to be an alternative, I don't play any of those games anymore (even though when I get to play CS:S for only 10 minutes or less it's definitely fun) because of Steam.

Yeah stem suck big time, I really hate the idea, but as long as ppl keep buying they will keep doing :(
I enjoy HL2 to a point I didn't think it was all that tough, HL was harder IMO. I never really got into CS/:S dunno why.

Ive been using Steam for 3 years an never had any problems. I bought all my games in store, registered them on steam and it always has just worked. If HL2/CSS crash as much as you are surely exaggerating, then you have serious other issues (probably hardware)
I have every game on steam except DoD:S and Kung Fu, ive been playing CS since 1.6 when I bought a HL1 collectors pack thing that had every HL1 based game, all on steam now. ON the system requirements for HL2 it states that an Internet connection is required.

The only problem with Steam I see is, you cant pirate the games :nutkick:

My favorite game of all time is the original Command & Conquer. Even though it is extremely dated and getting harder and harder to keep working with newer technologies, it will always hold a special place in my heart. It was after all the first game I ever purchased.:rockout:

Well yeah, it's exaggerating but very little. Sometimes I get about 45 minutes out of CS:S and one time I got to the second level of HL:2 after you get transported to that place outside on accident. But what I mean about Steam is I've had 2 COMPLETELY different computers, only similarity is the processors were both AMD. Different mobo, generation, socket, type of processor, graphics card, graphics company, RAM, RAM size, hard drives even internet connection. Both systems are just as unstable as each other on Steam.

I agree. I've had problems with steam also. For awhile I would play HL2 and afterplaying for about 20min, it would just crash. So I had to re-download and re-install HL2 from steam, and now it works fine. And of course there is the friends server:banghead: .

HL2 @ Steam? Pah!!

aside of half-life2 the best game for me was Fallout 2 (or was it released before y2k ?), Icewind Dale 1/2 and there are sure plenty of other good RPG's i didn't manage to put my hands on, Age of Mythology was good too, ehm UT2k4 although on lanparties everybody just has to play ctf-maul coz my system really can't handle anything larger :(

but was there some good game recently? i don't think so...

If RPG is your thing check out Knights of The Old Republic. Unless Star Wars doesn't do it for you.

Oh yeah, the single player for Homeworld was a lot of fun too. Never got much of a chance to try multiplayer though.
