Even on Windows, you can use a junction point for C:\Users and you can still keep your data after reinstalling.
My problem with windows is that sometimes windows files are copied to other drives than c:/, and if You want install something from microsoft store it's pain in the ass to remove it via windows, for me faster was formatting ssd, and if I'm doing full reinstall if something was deleted with it, it means it was not that important :). (Stuff that is important I've got hdd that is normally unplugged, and only when doing backup it is on.)

I haven't met my dad in quite some time, when I met him last week, he showed me his latest 'project' which is trying Linux distros on live USB. And he did it on old Lenovo Thinkpad T400 and the other is Aspire 1830T with single core Pentium, I think. I surprised it runs well even when loading through USB and could browse internet and watch YouTube. That got me thinking of trying one on few of my old laptops.
Linux mint xfce ftw:rockout:

Hitman, gta v legacy, etc - shows "windows only"
funny case - gta v ENHANCED - shows "available":D (but I won't install this ~92 GB crap on 250 GB ssd lmfao)
and same story with other games - some shows "windows only" sign, others could be installed.

In Steam, you will have to go to Settings, then Compatibility, then check "Enable Steam Play for all other supported titles". You should also check ProtonDB to see what games will work and what may be necessary to run them:

In addition to jak_2456's solution, you can set proton compatibility per game (right click on the game -> properties -> compatibility -> check the box then pick a proton version). I prefer this approach, because some games may refuse to work on some version, or require specific ones (some may not be even Valve's. Many people use 3rd party ones, a la Glorious Eggroll's).

Ok, Cachyos was miss for me, two installs and the same problem, gpu is not using everything it has (steam overlay is in 360 fps and full gpu utilization over 300W, but game in 50-100 fps with 30-80W -.-), today I will test Nobara and if that don't work, I will try Pikaos, and then Bazzite :D.

After testing 9070xt in Windows it is problem with drivers and GPU utilization. Cause in game 50-150w but loading Screen is using over 250w power.

I gave EndeavourOS a try and was honestly surprised how smooth it is as someone who is not afraid of little bit of command-line. I did manage to break some things but with little help from my Arch-Wizard friend, it was an easy fix.
For those interested, I was trying to change the login screen image from wrong place and went nuclear on some files I shouldn't have but in the end I did fix it, lock screen and login screen are separate on KDE.
With performance catching up to Windows and compatibility slowly becoming better it's very likely I'll run it on my new main desktop in few years.

i dont have a direct access to windows aero beside a vm with gpu passthrough, but IMO wayland/KDE is smoother, im not even mentioning distractions/customization

Arch's wiki is also the best source of information, regardless of which distro you use. Ubuntu's is also really, really good.

For sure, it looks and feels better. Heck, you can't even put the taskbar to the top anymore in Windows 11.

One of the reasons I'm very much looking forward to using EndeavourOS daily, AUR and wiki are such huge resources in favour of Arch-based distros. Ubuntu or Mint if you're not a fan of Canonical is very solid pick too and I found it's easy to use even without CLI.

The advice in there is pretty much universal. Other distros may use other tools by default, use different folders for config or logs. But it's all the same baring these minor differences.
Ubuntu or Mint if you're not a fan of Canonical is very solid pick too and I found it's easy to use even without CLI.
Ubuntu tries hard to appeal to users coming from Windows. I appreciated their tools for years. But the truth is, when push comes to shove, you're still better off if you know your way around bash.

Some find the sheer number of distros a con. I think it's a strong pro: it makes it very likely you will find something you're comfortable with. As your linux-fu improves, you can move on to other distros. Or not. And you can do that at your own pace.
My journey was Kubuntu (over a decade) -> Neon (for a while) -> Arch. With various encounters with Fedora and OpenSuse at work.

Have you tried or at least taken a look at Garuda? Also Arch-based and runs flawlessly for me. The Draconized version is the gaming-oriented spin so it comes with many things you need and many others you don't, so it can be a bit resource-intensive, and its looks are quite divisive.

It was not a problem with cachyos, I've come back to cachy os for now and it is flawless for me, it's that amd has problem with 9070 xt that some games don't utilize all resources, and then card wants to down clock, and it gives problems with 1% low fps. If the game can top out card then it is not a problem. (I've spend reinstalling linux around 8 times through last week, and i was trying to install windows but ventoy was bugging out, and i was starting installation linux/windows around 15-20 times in last week. ) Now I've got windows 11 ltsc, as backup, and for stability control, and cachyos as main gaming platform, witcher 3 is working great with it :).
Now I'm waiting for fans to arrive, and for now I will be closing the case :), of course after finding out how to use corectrl to dismiss this stupid 0 rpm bull.... from amd :).
