Hi everyone, last week i bought thermal pads brand ''Gelid GP-Extreme'' for my gpu (3070ti ftw3 ultra) that started to have elevated temperatures (this card has never been open since 3years 6months). i opened with all instruments like anti-static band, plastic tray, etc. no damage to any component too. so i replace the thermal paste, the thermal paste was flaking and pads looks a little rocky just little.
short story, berfore change pads and thermal tempretures are 83° in general and hotspot was 95.1° and now general temperatures are 79-84.4 but the hot spot is 107.7 the higest pick
As far i know the thermal pads are 2.25mm (from fabric) and i use 2.5mm, 2.25 pads are scarce. after reading i see some people even replacing them with 3mm... i need help ;(.

You didnt measure the gap is why.

Use thinner pads, or softer pads.

Take your card back apart and get a picture of the imprint on the heat sink and pads. This will let you see where you are and aren’t making good contact.

It sounds like you aren’t making good contact and a pad possibly shifted during install.

If the pads are soft enough, 2.5mm instead of 2.25mm should be fine. And that place where there was putty, I’d recommend a 1mm pad as noted in the EVGA post. Putty is typical for smaller gapped areas and typically a pad wouldn’t be practical.

Still, take it apart and get a picture of how the heat sink looks.

maybe a bit off topic but relevant, isnt there a telegram group that has specs/database on thermal pad sizes and such for different gpu?

I remember someone asking abou pad sizes and someone here posted the sizes. and they asked how he knew and said theres a telegram group for this

Don't know about groups, but here is a channel where a LOT of pad thickness are already posted.
Texts are in russian. The language shouldn't matter since the searchable model and the picture with pad thickness are langauge-agnostic.

i bought new pads from aliexpress, 2.25mm i tell you guys if something change thanks to all. this post is not solved yet.

Hi everyone bad news, so new thermal pads are 2.25mm brand ''Upsiren'' + thermal paste '' kryonaut thermal grizzly'' temps now are better but i got the same problem, it's like if i play in 1080p temps are really good like 74°C on gpu hotspot 84° but is some cases like FurMark 2, Heaven Benchmark 4.0 or playing Escape from tarkov temps get high again, this time 104.1 something like that and sometimes the gpu sends artifacts like 2 times in 1 week but not for high temps, sometimes in stand by. all pads and thermal paste are in correct way so i'm stuck. here are some picks 1st one is escape from tarkov 2k low sett, 2nd one is overwarch 2k low sett.
pd: PC get throttling when get test only in 1080p gets low t°

Something still isn’t making good contact. As I noted above, get a picture of the heatsink and the card after removing the heatsink from the GPU.

Unless I am missing something, I don’t see a picture of this.

Don't think you solved anything with the new thermal pads. The delta between GPU core temperature and hotspot temperature is way too high for anything to be normal.

You are too concerned with the screen resolution, what you should be paying attention to is the load on the graphics card. My guess is at 1080p maybe your card is not being worked as hard, so the temperature would naturally be lower compared to at higher resolution when it has to render more pixels.

this is the tear down, in the 3rd image i was thinking that maybe that screw with spring could make a fake conctact so i put al toguether but still make high temps° after re-build :/. All sizes was taken from a EVGA forum.
(is neccesary to re-paste the gpu everytime i open it?)

Might be time to move on

That looks like good contact to me. And generally yes, when you break that seal, you should repaste.

Some thicker pastes I have gotten away with a remount.

Looking at the pictures again, those springs look to be quite worn. When you back off the screws and the springs stay compressed, that isn't good. Those springs are what are applying the tension to the heatsink and making the better contact.

The mounting doesn't look correct as far as the mounting screws are concerned smashed springs like that. Those should have a little gap where the springs are not smashed flat.

Don't the screws have a short collar?

guys there's any technique to know which part of the gpu is not making good contact? i changed the thermal paste (noctua paste) and that improved temps a lot but, didn't solve the issue. I use 3DFurMark II and Heaven Benchmark 4.0 where temps get really good like 74°gpu and 88°hotspot and no thermal throttling like 2200rpm all fans. but playing dark and darker 2k low all settings or tarkov arena 2k low all settings get my gpu to hotspot 99.1°, after playing like 4hrs gpu got black screens :/...

btw: screws with springs works good... at the moment.
