Mobile gacha games, lmao. They're fine-tuned to be addictive by incentivizing players to login daily, having limited-time events and of course, the integral character gambling system. Unfortunately for me, I play a whole host of them and have grown accustomed to their scumminess - if only to appreciate all the waifus and husbandos they let me collect.

The main one I play is Granblue Fantasy, though I also play Honkai Star Rail, Zenless Zone Zero, Goddess of Victory: NIKKE, Snowbreak: Containment Zone, and a host of others. In particular, I've been playing Granblue for around 5 1/2 years - by far the longest of the bunch. I've been logging into it daily for a couple of years now, too. And this is what it looks like:

1725658122382.png

Yep, it's a browser game - a hosting method which most mobile gachas moved on from long ago. But hey, me still playing it attests to how much of a pull it has over me. ...Or maybe just how much I like the characters, IDK.

For me its ARPGs and Looter shooters and MMOs used to do the same to me in the past but MMOs not anymore. 'I prefer to play solo nowadays or at most with 1-2 friends so party based MMOs just doesn't work with me anymore'
I've picked up Diablo 2 when I was in elementary school grade 7 I think and I've got addicted to it very fast even tho I did not understand most of the game cause of zero English knowledge. 'We had to learn German in my school and that was the only option back then.. It was actually D2 that made me start to self learn English slowly'

I can't even fathom the hours I've sunk into D2 both offline singleplayer and online Battlenet later on when my family got an inet connection when I was in my late grade 8.
Then the looter shooter genre happened with Borderlands 1 'well pretty much what defined the genre imo' and it did the same to me and I have probably like 3000+ hours in the serie or so. 'BL 3 alone is 1100+'

I've never gambled in my life and never got into buying lottery tickets either 'tried but quited it fast' but there is something about ARPGs/Looter Shooter gear and build grind thats just gets me going until I'm satisfied which is like never. 'I try to draw the line nowadays tho, when I'm good with my end game build and reached my end game goals then I take a break/put the game down for a while and thats why the seasonal system is perfect for me'

Considering my Granblue and general gacha game addiction, ARPGs might be suited to my tastes. Although there tends to be a dearth of attractive characters in those games, so maybe not, on second thought.

Stardew Valley grabbed me hard. Don't know if I've hit 1kh, but def well into the hundreds. Same with Terraria, though both have been out of rotation for a good while now. Have near-4-digit hours into Satisfactory, Valheim and Deep Rock Galactic (all three from pre-Embracer Coffee Stain; coincidence?). FFXIV has me in a nigh deathgrip atm.

Terraria was my whole life in middle school. I've kinda grown out of the game now (partially because my attention span is next to nonexistent nowadays), but it still holds a special place in my heart. Thank you, Re-Logic.

I have few friends that has WoW in game time of few years...

Your petty few week affairs seem to be trivial.
Yep... I ended up at something along those lines during vanilla/TBC... telling mum and dad I had to eat dinner quickly because at 19.30 it was raid time, I had work to do!

For me it was Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Xfire counted over 3000H, but also played a lot without Xfire, and when others where playing Blops 3 already.

Most played map was Crash, which i played in a PNX or PNY-Clan server. 24/7 HC Search and Destroy. Most of the time there was a guy called "Joker-Hero" and were both with shotguns waiting at "Bomb A-side" from Attack or Defence

It sounds strange but the lastest addictive i've played was Resident Evil VII VR on PS4 (!)
Everyday I was in a rush to quit job and play the game :)

Theses days it should be Dorfromantik (link), also on GOG. A fun and relaxing tiles game. Think Carcassonne as a solo game.

years back when I was a gamer and bum, I played batman arkham asylum and gta all day. no shower, no shave. pizza deliveries and from chair to toilet to chair to bed. Im glad I started dating then cleaned up my act and my body more. its too addicting and unproductive. its why I dont have a tv at home for at least 15 years now. its too addicting. you just bum and flip from channel to channel wondering what ELSE is on.

I guess gaming and having a TV just aren't meant to be for some people. :p

it truly isnt. tv made me lazy and stupid. except documentaries which I always love. but gaming was too addicting and toxic for my life. arkham asylum had so many bugs, I was going for high scores and I broke too many keyboards because of bug/glitches. its when I knew it was bad for my health and mental wellness. I got nothing done.

fortunately I was able to pull away from that. went into bodybuilding. when you do things you love with discipline it adds structure to your life but you must balance other things too.

Morrowind should be remastered.
If re-released by a talented team with modern graphics it would probably be the most addictive RPG.

What is also significant are the recent ratings this game is getting:

Released in 2002, the game is still constantly getting new 10/10 ratings from new players in 2024.
While the best new RPG games of 2024 do not always score as high.

I think I'm past the age of any game being addictive. I tend to avoid F2P although I've liked a couple of them and can't stand gaming on a phone. The games I have played for long periods of time has mostly been becuase I play either with my wife or friends.

The only games I would consider addictive is probably Witcher series I have around 1000 hours sunk into the 3 games with most of that sunk into 2/3. I even played through the console version of 2 and switch version of 3.

You know that is my Kryptonite. As far as I am concerned that is that greatest Game ever created. Yep I was a Shannara, Wheel Of time, Drizzit and Moorcock nut. I fell in love with TW when I got Rome at a flea market for $5. I had been playing Praetorians when I installed that my love of Ancient History went crazy but the first time I used a Dragon's breath to mow down a row of Archers it was over.

How has Martyr been? Space Marine 2 is almost here!!!!!
Martyr is... crack cocaine. Once you get into the crafting system and the void crusades its fcking on and builds just keep evolving based on your loot. Lots of ways to build even the same couple of weapons. I have half an idea what I'm doing though, the tooltips aren't very clear and the character stats are not clarifying much either, but I'm melting the entire screen, so all is well :D

Yeah I've seen you guys talk about it and I did check some gameplay of it and it looks fun, might pick it up when I'm not full of games to play.
I'm not that invested in the whole Warhammer world but I did like and play Warhammer 40k Dawn of War a lot when it was new.

Nowadays I've got my hands full of Diablo 4 tho since the new expansion is coming and Last Epoch is also getting some really cool new updates that I might have to check out between the seasons. 'as long as I find the time somehow..'
For what its worth I've played the current D4 season for ~67 hours and at that point my char was capable of destroying any content in the game with one of the strongest builds and had a very solid gear so I've called it quits till the expansions which gives me some time to play other games. 'backlog games if possible..'

This captures Martyr well imho. Great entry to re-immerse yourself in this awesome, super rich in lore franchise :)
Basically as long as the Boltguns sound and feel like they should... its heaven to me :D And they do, they really do. The game also reminds me strongly of Darktide in terms of atmosphere, there's even similar musical sequences in them. Dark, gritty, brutal, and still it doesn't take itself too seriously. Its also worth reading some Warhammer books... its really underrated imho, probably because of its British origin and style of humour and writing. But yeah, even the dialogue in Martyr, though not of triple A quality, its pretty well done, doesn't annoy the shit of you with ultra cheesy oneliners, but does manage to put a smile on your face from time to time.

Its way above my expectations tbh. There's so many Warhammer game turds going around. This is of another category.

By the way, the whole crafting system looks like a 1:1 copy out of Last Epoch. Crafting points to spend, upgrade and change whatever you want. Except here you can also just buy new crafting points :D So you can really min max, the game doesn't care much as long as you've got the cash to do it.

I see you jumped right down the rabbit hole. You must have some nice places to get implant upgrades.

I had Dawn of War 2; Retribution as my first entry into modern Warhammer. It was the first SpaceMarine Game way back in 2011 or whenever it was launched that introduced me fully. It might even have been on my PS3. It was TWWH that drove me down the Warhammer rabbit hole. Those videos like the one you posted certainly helped but the funny thing for me is that they have been pushing out some real bangers in the 40K universe lately. 40K Rogue Trader in some ways is just as good in story and depth as BG3, 40K Daemon Hunters is XCom on steroids, of course you know that 40K Martyr has a serious D1/Dawn of War vibe and the 3 strikes rule on missions is killer. Now they have dropped SpaceMarine2 on our heads and that Game is in a way a 3D Version of Martyr but the Weapons and different QOL upgrades in Martyr is actually insane. Playing as the Inquisitor I love my hand laser, Uber powered Sniper rifle and chainsword. Then the accoutrements are really well done as well. I am not a huge fan of Henry Cavill but I would love to see a Warhammer 40K live. I mean they have already done the Wheel of Time and that is from a whole differenrt generation.

For me it is Elite Dangerous.

I am so happy that I have met someone that has enjoyed Elite Dangerous. The difficulty I had with the mechanics turned me off but I saw the potential. So many places to see. Thankfully Everspace 2 did a nice job of scratching that itch. Congrats.

It's pretty addictive despite the toxicity in the game and playerbase but I've got about 25,000 hrs up in league of legends. I've been playing since beta and I've had a single account permabanned (for what seems like an amusing reason)

My current account has 10,000+ hrs racked up since 2018 (puts me in the top 100 of my region) but if they added my first account I'd be #1 in the region and top #20 in the world.

I do play it a lot, but I also don't spend much time playing other games in my game time (I do a little but league is my comfort pick)

Used to be RPGs (back in the NES, SNES and Genesis days) for me. Personally, I don't really have an addictive personality.

I play a mixture of shooting (third or first person), ARPGs and RTS games. Some games will get me dozens and dozens of hours whereas others will be 10-20 hours and I'll move on.

I think Grim Dawn is the one I've put the most into out of all the years. Play for a month or so and I don't touch it for 6 months. Play for a month or two off and on, then not again for another 6 months. Over the course of the game's 8.5 years being out I've sunk about 800 hours into it, mostly single player, but 50ish hours is probably from co-op play.

Back then I spend time playing games like Max Payne 2 that I can remember all their enemies and uses minimum quicksaves and/or painkiller (Dead on Arrival difficulty have limited saves), I also 'religiously' play Medal of Honor Allied using the same formula. I still remember the exact location of various enemy in sniper town and sniper forest till this day.

For modern day I spend over thousand hours I think on Planetside 2. MMOFPS with 200vs200 player is a lotta fun...when the server is full usually on double xp weekend. But that was like over 6 years ago. I stopped when I get married and have a kid. When I open my PC nowadays I usually play Cyberpunk2077, something about the sidequest is fun. It's well crafted, just the main mission isn't as strong as the side ones. Another surprise is Fallout London, it's a well thought out mods with very good storytelling and good amount of sidequest and factions. You can feel the passion modders put inside this game, though game kept crashing on me, and some bug that can be easily fixed by community.

Nowadays I just replaying old games I used to play on PS1 on my Anbernic; Ace Combat 3, Gran Turismo 2, GTA2, Harvest Moon: Back To Nature. Just playing these old games brings smile to me, remembering the fun old days where you have no commitment and carefree.

EDIT: I forgot to mention GTA San Andreas. I replay this game almost annually, from start to finish, no cheat no mods. Only mods I use is silent patch to fix various bugs and introduce quality of life improvement like modern resolution. This game for me is the best GTA for me in terms of storytelling, the rise and fall, and rise again of the protagonist. I love the world it has in it's 'small map', three big cities and a countryside, good radio station and tons of activities to do.

I totally get you on City Skylines 2! I got sucked into it the moment I started playing hours just disappear. The whole process of setting up bus routes and managing traffic is weirdly satisfying. I’ve been on a strategy game kick lately, so it's right up my alley. It's almost like when I get lost in math games on math playground one minute you’re playing a simple game, next thing you know, hours are gone. Totally addictive in the best way!

Factorio. It's not my most played game (just a few hundred hours when I have thounsands in other games) but it's like a drug. When I start a new Factorio game I know I won't be doing anything else for the next week. Other games can make me addicted for the rest of the day but the next day I wake up fresh. When I play factorio I wake up thinking about how to increase my green circuits production and everything else doesn't matter, only the that the factory must grow.
