Elite Dangerous is definitely up there for me too! Been hooked for years now. Funny enough, it reminds me of my younger days playing the original Elite on a BBC Micro B those were the days! Also, whenever I need a quick break, I hop onto math playground for some fun little math games. It’s a different kind of addictive, but in a good way

Usually the games that hook me are, rather predictably, the ones with a dopamine drip feed. Idle games and strategy games, oh my. Of them, NGU Idle, Creeper World 4, and Hero's Hour soaked up a lot of time. Creeper World 4 most notably got me through recovering from my wisdom tooth removal.

I'm also somewhat addicted to Blade and Sorcery's Crystal Hunt, but that's begun to ebb as I've gotten a feel for what most easily deals with human enemies + Hector. Mind Crystal and Focus Regen armor, people. Take the Dio pill.

Stardew Valley grabbed me hard. Don't know if I've hit 1kh, but def well into the hundreds. Same with Terraria, though both have been out of rotation for a good while now. Have near-4-digit hours into Satisfactory, Valheim and Deep Rock Galactic (all three from pre-Embracer Coffee Stain; coincidence?). FFXIV has me in a nigh deathgrip atm.

One update, one correction. Satisfactory is now the current addictor, and I've 200-odd hours in it, not approaching 1000. Will probably crest 300 in the near future, though.

Morrowind should be remastered.
If re-released by a talented team with modern graphics it would probably be the most addictive RPG.

What is also significant are the recent ratings this game is getting:

Released in 2002, the game is still constantly getting new 10/10 ratings from new players in 2024.
While the best new RPG games of 2024 do not always score as high.
Morrowind for all of its clunkiness just offers SO much mystery, the drive to figure out all of it is immense. I think thats the key to immersion. Gives players that hook to explore, not just by having a giant map full of places, but by making said places interesting, mysterious, surprising.

Thats what the compass in TES games later kinda destroyed for the series. The mystery slowly got phased out, in part because the same types of locations are planted across the map, but also bevause of the weird idea players need full freedoms from the get go. Skyrim for example but also Oblivion, Starfield... there is no real hurdle to reaching everything on the map. Morrowind? Most stuff is somehow locked until you get the required leads to get in. Especially the more iconic locations.

I found a new game yesterday. Not sure if its addictive, but I do know I spent 6 consecutive hours on my chair last evening and it was suddenly 2 AM. Didn't even pee :wtf:

1728989065508.png

Its like They Are Billions, but with a physics engine and you can toss Meteors at armies too. It also has QoL features that TAB completely lacks, such as game speed adjustment, save files, restart from save, etc... It has challenge modes, a sandbox mode, a super tough and wild campaign mode, and an endless mode where you can build to your hearts' content. The mechanics are perfect, the skillcap is stupidly high.

I think this is one of those games I'll just keep coming back to.

Every time I start a Frostpunk run, I cannot stop until it finishes. Like a 6 hour time warp.
Yeah. See above lol, its the same thing except now the low temp is replaced by raging peasants and undead :D

Youtube showed me a video of City Skylines2. I installed it last night. From 8:30 this morning and basically all day I have been doing things like building highways, hospitals, power plants and aggressively dealing with traffic bottlenecks. If you are someone that has played strategy Games and enjoyed them this is cocaine. Just getting a bus route setup is involved. The first time you build an interstate the scale will blow you away and the engine has you with Skyscapers in an established downtown with a University area with lot's of Apartments with stores on the bottom Setting up a train route is one of the most rewarding milestones in the Game. Trams are cool too. I have only had this for one day, It actually made my beer warm. View attachment 362226
cities skylines 1 with the correct arsenal of mods is even more addictive. I picked up that game for like 1.2GBP on a sale and its been the best game ever :D

Magic the Gathering, if we combine all hours of Magic Online original client, steam games, and Magic Arena + real life Magic the Gathering over the last 24 years... combined the amount of hours is just unspeakable, literally we can't speak it, it might summon forth ethereal creatures of judgement that ask me what I did with my life, and that is some existential dread I do not wish to enter

Helldivers 2. It is not addictive in that I want to play 6 hours at a time like a Civ game but it is a fun, cinematic game where every match is tense and possibly epic. It pretty much is my daily driver of games on the days when I can dedicate a hour to games. The song that starts when you launch off in your pod is always super epic, like you are the Avengers coming to save the day.

Stardew Valley is addictive in the sense that it is easy to start with a new farm and get hooked on the cycle of upgrades and expansions until you get tired of the game many many hours later. Each day is about 15 minutes so you can play 30 minutes and finish 2 days and then quit. The economics are well balanced, the art style is cute and timeless, and the music is god tier.

Hades 1 (and Hades 2 in EA) are addictive because you can play 5 minutes and advance in the game, room by room. No need to dedicate hours to this game, start it up, play 15 minutes (just like Stardew Valley), quit the game as it auto-saves (like Stardew Valley). The combat is super tight and refined, the world-building/lore/environments are top notch, and the characters are all memorable.

Hades was unusually addictive for me. I seriously wanted to die on some runs just so I would get to see the next bits of the storyline quicker lol.

Not sure but by going hours I’ve spend 1901.3 on dota 2 and original guild wars I was around 1400hrs

I did god knows what hour on Dota.

Started in 2005 and still put in an hour or two per week. Dota 1 didn't have any stats or anything but I probably did 30 hours every week for a few years during university for sure. I'd say around 12,000 hours is a safe bet considering I have 4000 logged in Dota 2 and I played 1 way more than I played 2.

Edit: Don't get into it.

Youtube showed me a video of City Skylines2. I installed it last night. I heard Skylines 2 wasn't as great as 1. I wonder if they improved it through patches etc? Considering CP2077 was junk at launch but it's pretty decent now, it's hard to gauge how a game is nowadays with only launch day reviews.

I have a routine of replaying Half-Life or Black Mesa at least once a year, and I enjoy it to the max every single time. I tend to lose myself in Need For Speed Underground 2 as well whenever I pop the disc into my PS2. The early 2000s is the best time period we've had for gaming (or maybe I'm too nostalgic).
Me too for anything Half Life and I would say the most hours I've put in on any games are the early Tomb Raiders (not even counting pre-Steam and other platforms era) and the first two of the Survivor Trilogy.
Some games just have that secret sauce.
