Those two CPU M.2 slots are fully independent without the lane-sharing tomfoolery that is its successor.
Some would argue that X870E is a downgrade from X670E because of the mandated diversion of four CPU lanes towards USB4 which could have been used for a second CPU M.2.

No need to argue. X870(E) IS a downgrade for the vast majority of users. It is only really an option for people who absolutely MUST have USB 4.0 and/or WiFi 7. Otherwise, X870(E), and it pains me to say this, is hot garbage.

I was really looking forward to dumping my degraded Intel RPL trash for a nice, new, shiny X870E build but that ain't happening now with those compromises and overabundant lane sharing. I will wait the seven weeks (Oct 10) until Arrow Lake and if Intel gets it right with Arrow and Z890 then I will be forced to stick with Intel, unfortunately.

Sorry, AMD. You had your chance but you botched it in unfathomable style. Only if Intel fucks up Arrow Lake/Z890 equally, will I (re-)consider an AMD build but it will be a compromise-free X670E board (ROG STRIX X670E-A) and then a 7800X3D to be replaced by a 9800X3D later on...

Man, there sure is a lot of hate for the Aurous Master... Its a pretty damn decent middle of the road MB. I've been rocking the AM4 version for a few years now and its very stable. The only problem I had with it during launch was AMD's USB issues. Sometimes required to plug and unplug in the keyboard or mouse to get them to activate on boot. It took a few BIOS updates to get it right.

Middle of the road? The Master is GB's second highest model, if you set the Tachyon on its own tier apart.

As long as you don't care about speed, this board has you covered... 4x existing M.2s, 2x M.2 via PCIe adapter cards, and 2x M.2 via external USB4 or TB3/4 enclosures. :rockout:

If you don't need such silly things as GPUs, you can pretty much get 8x internal M.2s on most mid-range and higher end AM5 motherboards thanks to in-slot bifurcation of the x16 PCIe slot into x4+x4+x4+x4. (Technically, all boards can do this with chiplet based CPUs, but most low-end boards miss the option to enable it in the UEFI setup)

The AM4 version has Dual-BIOS with manual switches and voltage measurement points. The AM5 versions are a downgrade.

I think he meant in terms of features. Tachyon for all intents and purposes does not exist. Well see if the X870E version gets broad release.

Why are AMD forcing usb4? CPU has 16x - 4x - 4x, but one of those x4 is now being used by the usb4. I'd rather have extra m.2 slot. I don't how AMD could have made x870e worse then x670e as well zen5 worse then zen4.
I hope they don't discontinue x670e

Why are AMD forcing usb4?

More expensive Mainboards with hardly any benefits.
Everything is soldered instead of a plugin card.
Most often in my point of view garbage is soldered on mainboard. (mediatek wifi / rgb / 1gb or 2.5gb Garbage lan instead of 5 or 10gb lan / low quality audio card / ....)

I get the feeling my future buy for a B650 spare mainboard is already too late. The price rises and that modell is already barely available. I had set myself a target purchase price, which was never met so far. (price was set to the price of b550 from previous generation)

... X870(E) IS a downgrade .... MUST have USB 4.0 and/or WiFi 7. Otherwise, X870(E), and it pains me to say this, is hot garbage.

... (re-)consider an AMD build but it will be a compromise-free X670E board (ROG STRIX X670E-A) and then a 7800X3D to be replaced by a 9800X3D later on...

I checked for my mainboard and very little for other mainboards from MSI and ASROCK. Similar products exists from MSI and Asrock, sometimes also for Thunderbolt.

ASUS has a 100€ plugin card for my Asus X670-P Prime Mainboard which provides USB 4.0. That plugin card is compatible with many intel and amd -Asus only mainboards.

You can just go with X670/E mainboards already.

Faster than the 5G included?

10GB only - Else - please do not solder garbage network interface card on the mainboard.

Source for 10GbE requirement? I've only seen USB4 and Wifi 7 as requirements for the new platform.

Granted, bios flashback was made a requirement for AM5 yet some designs ignored that requirement as well. Requirements only work as well as they are enforced.
I was wrong, sadly 10Gbit not mandatory :(
MSI X670E Carbon WiFi, Ace & Godlike, Asus X670E Crosshair Hero, both ProArts, or the Asrock X670E Taichi (Carrara) not good enough for you? If you want a Gigabyte board, you probably have to wait for the X870E Aorus Xtreme AI Top (or whatever it will be called) which seems to be the only non-Asus board that supports x8/x8 lane splitting for 4-slot wide GPUs so far.
Since SLI is dead and Crossfire seems to be even too antiquated for AMD to list it as a feature, most folks are happy with their single RTX 4090, it seems. The MSI X670E Godlike seems to come with an SLI-license, though. At least it has the trademark for the license on the back of the board, but MSI doesn't list it as a feature. Maybe, if you still have a matched pair of RTX 3090 TIs, that board could be interesting for you, otherwise multi-GPU is pretty much dead in the consumer space.
If you seriously need more PCIe lanes for Prosumer or professional workloads, and HBAs, video I/O cards, etc., you always have the option to go for entry level workstation DIY with TRX50 or Xeon-W 2000 series...
The Asus ProArt were the only X670 I would consider. I expect the X870E based ProArt will be at least as good.
SLI? Why would anyone think of that?
I just wish to use my m.2 card normally, and not extra crispy under my GPU heatsink.

"Just buy Threadripper bro"
TOP KEK LMAO even
1 - I know about it, (everyone know about it here)
The problem is:
2 - only the price...
Hope Intel will soon offer something with 50~60 PCIe usable lanes, forcing AMD to follow (nah, I would personally wouldn't buy any Intel CPU using more than the N100)
3 - Ryzen 9000 offers 28 lanes
Threadripper 7000 gives 88 lanes (60 more than the "top Ryzen 9")
Do you need a marketing degree to notice there is a big gap between?
Don't get me wrong, if I win the lottery I can use it all, but as of now, I would be happy with like ~40 usable PCIe lanes
8 m.2 slots or bust :)
So basically you wish for 2 full 16× PCIe slot :toast:
And two of these:

I don't know what you are trying argue here. The board manufacturers can choose what to put on their different boards. YES
I posted AMD's own specifications sheet on their own product

The X870E can give max 24.
Some board will give you less, but never more than 24...

Well 20 is less than 24 so I can accept that.
USB4 is mandatory (or standard) for board with X870E, never argued that, it is in the table posted from amd.com .
I am pretty sure this board has less than 24 PCIe connections on it

Personally I am waiting for the ProArt X870E iteration, as most of the X670 boards were not that interesting, and this generations is also less than impressive.

LOL
They actually trolling me....
Also, where did you find that?
When I checked asus.com this ProArt X870E-Creator WiFi did not show up in the list.
Now I see why... they have filter for X870, but no for the X870E :slap:

Thanks for the link
At least it still gives 2 PCIe 8× and a PCIe 4× connector...
Will read the manual when they care to upload it :D

edit: I might prefer the new X870E version more since it gives you the 10Gb ethernet, so you are not losing a slot

they both got 10gbe and usb4 x670e has the intel usb4 chipset not ASMedia probably wired to chipset bridge chip, not the the cpu and it can't do display via the type c. I'd prefer x670e

Sorry to hear that, I never had a battery die on me, and I had several boards serving me more than 3 years
my current oldest is 13 years old and doing just fine

Also, the X870 chip mandates 10GBe and USB4
This board only supports 5GBe...
I had a Rampage 6 Apex board that came with a dead CMOS battery, and I had the battery die after 4 years in an EVGA board.
Most of the time, those little batteries last forever. Last year I pulled a KTS battery out of a Sandy Bridge era Dell Inspiron 620 desktop that was still going.
