Forums really needs a review/article notification for degenerates like me who access the site from techpowerup.com/forums link instead of the homepage. I saw the article only after visiting the r/hardware subreddit.
Is Twitter an option for you? How do you feel about browser push notifications for this?

Ah yes these OC's, also known as the degrade your CPU within 6 months settings. Something tells me gaming rigs are meant to last more than a year.

@W1zzard - I hear a lot of Intel Fanbois are calling out GN because they leave the Intel RingBus setting to default. I hear setting it to 5GHz unblocks the memory bottleneck on the Intel CPU.

I'm sorry if this has already been said, but I did not go through all 8 pages of posts here.

Deversification will only get deeper as time goes on, I'm afraid, my friend.

  • There will be people who want Zen 3 based GPU tests, because for their scenario it makes the most sense
  • There will be people who want Intel based GPU tests, since globally it is still very common
  • There will be people who want tests with slower and more common memory speeds, and those who want with high speeds and tight timings
  • There will be people who want CPU tests with an RTX 3080 because it is the most advanced NVIDIA GPU the common can afford, but others who want an RX 6800 XT one because it represents a fair alternative
  • There will be those who want GPU tests on both Intel and AMD systems, since RDNA 2's SAM feature is AMD exclusive, but you can't exclude most users who don't have the option to use SAM since they have already purchased older hardware
  • RTX ON? RTX OFF? Smart Cache OFF? Smart cache ON? What about 8 core vs 10 cores vs 12 cores? And Memory types and configuration? why not 4 DIMMS? why not 2 DIMMS?
  • What about overclocking? And what about manual memory tuning? will you be tuning each system to its own capabilities? And what about cooler use? Air, WC, or maybe just stock?
With how many possible branches to base a testing platform on, you just can't satisfy everyone. Makes sense.
I'd advise the little I can here, and say, go with the gut feeling of what can serve the common viewer the most benefit. At times, Its ok to serve a piece of information knowing not everyone can benefit from it, but at least a sizeable amount of readers can.

Extrapolate, my friends... extrapolate.

For GPU testing the fastest CPU platform with the least amount of variance should be used. Using the fastest CPU platform gives the GPUs the best chance to show their performance relative to other GPUs. The least amount of variance means that you should be able to run a GPU test 100 times in a row and get a very similar result each and every time you run the test. For CPU testing, the GPU that is able to achieve the highest FPS at low resolutions should be used to remove the GPU performance as a potential variable in the testing.

Selecting a standard test platform using the fastest available lets users know the relative performance of the components being tested in an ideal environment.

As for the performance differences between AMD and Intel on older GPUs, it could have something to do with the clock speed of the CPUs or the DX12 support on the 20 series of GPUs (I vaguely remember something about some DX12 feature not being 100% supported on the 20 series of GPUs), you could try a 5700xt and see if the performance difference remains.

I don't use twitter (or any social media except reddit) that often anymore. I can be content with push notifications but I rarely notice it. Preferably I want a system where I can check new news pieces, recent discussion comment and recent review/article all at once. Maybe here where the member list is:

Member list being right at the top is an unusual position imo. I usually see it being at the bottom.

nice follow up, thank you @W1zzard

i intend to upgrade my main rig on time (financial status is ... not good atm ) but i think of a 5600X and a RX6800 or XT when they will be in stock.

that's what your initial review confirmed for me ... thus i did not think you deliberately made AMD look bad, because to me it did not ..

For Intel shills saying " but intel is faster when overclocked " wrong.

Nice job for Steve to take the time and respond to the subscribers who made comments about a fair comparison.
Timings of the RAM used on Intel were very good. There are RAM sticks cheap enough though already on higher speed just by applying the SMP.
Also, disabling Spectre on Intel, you gain more FPS.

And yes, looks like on 6 count core, AMD is better in games (too) regardless of the OC on Intel.
The 5600x is a very good choice for those who are interested mainly in gaming, or in choosing the best PC in that price range.
Also, having a solid performance out of the box is good for a lot of people who do not go into overclocking.

The only observation I can make is that the 5600x costs more than a 10600k , and you can't buy it now , out of stock everywhere.
In terms of prices , the 5600x is on par now with the 10700k.

5600X is available in some regions. In others, it is sold out. Its in stock here where I live, anyone can buy it (Bulgaria).
The 10600K has no cooler and uses a lot of power, its MSRP is 262 USD. The 5600X is 299 (300) USD. The 10th gen also lacks PCIE4. 10700K is still slower and even more inefficient and is even more expensive.

If I reviewed CPUs, I would always test them with the highest officially supported RAM speed, which is DDR4-2933 for the i9-10900K and DDR4-3200 for Ryzen 3000 and 5000 CPUs. Further tinkering with RAM speed and latencies means you're overclocking, which gives unreliable results.

The 10400 is a nice alternative to the 3600 but not comparable to a 5600x.
