How much over MSRP are you willing to spend on your graphics card?

I am new here. Hello everyone.

This discussion appeared in a search when I was looking at GPU prices. My vote on purchasing a video card is based on 20 years of building computers for myself and family. Today's (out of stock) and high prices on video cards is worse than ever. I am using a GTX 1070 Ti which I bought in 2017 for $530.00 from Amazon (new). That card new today is double the price, if you can find it. I don't blame the manufacturers for this crazy market; I blame it on scalpers and bitcoin miners. Such a waste of money IMHO for people to persue this notion that crypto-currency is going to make them rich. Gamers and other types of PC users who need powerful video cards really get the wind knocked out of us when we see these prices. It's just sad. I am glad I do not need a new video card ATM and even more fortunate that I have a used GTX 1080 X for a backup. Glad I am not in the market for a new card; I feel badly for those who really need one.

My system plays all my games and does all my work fast and reliably. I doubt I will build a new computer for several more years.

Thank you for this, inspired me to think that the 8 GB of VRAM on my 3070 isn't that bad to begin with. Hell I was even lucky to find this at 6 AM in stock at MSRP, because my 2070 had just died on me at the worst time.

Did not vote because most often the MSRP are for the US market only. I got my 3060ti for $466 when converted to US dollars. But that is more or less the base price for 3060ti from any brand here when they start rolling out in my country. Was that count as MSRP?

I bought my 1080 Ti FE at launch for just over €800, after a few months they dropped the price. So, like @lexluthermiester, 10/15 % is ok. Oh and delivery within 2 weeks.

Normally I'll pay as close to msrp as I can get. I paid about £75 more than msrp for my 3080, but that was because I was late to the party on day 1. At the time I thought it was a mistake, but that's still £170 less than they're selling for now.

What worries me is that nvidia and AMD are being sent a message that people will pay the current eye-watering prices...

Zero over MSRP, though I do have a fully functioning (though a little old) 980. Like many of you I tend to keep backups, which in order of relative power are:

GTX 970>>GTX 760>>GTX 660>>GTX 460 OC>>HD 7770>>N250GTS>>Nothing (I game on a workstation PC, so no Intel).

I don't know what I would do if I faced catastrophic failure of my GPU (and the 970), but I would certainly NOT pay for a card at current prices. I'd probably just emulate or play whatever will run on my laptop until prices came down. These days there are just so many choices if you are a PC gamer (and are not addicted to current "AAA+" games) I don't think I would ever run out of entertainment.

And if the prices never came down? I'd be very curious how the PC gaming industry would respond.

not this again..... MSRP is for EVERY market. your retailer will advertise a price with and without sales tax/VAT. we are talking about PRE tax. in the US, sales tax/VAT is added on top of the purchase price, or on top of the msrp. i got an rtx 3090 strix for it's original MSRP, which was $1800 USD, BUT i did not pay $1800. i paid nearly $2000 after sales tax were applies.

your card was not actually $466. remove the sales tax, and you'll figure out what you paid.

here is an example from germany. MSRP vs sale price. we are talking about the shit in red box, which is perfectly in line with MSRP in the US. 677 euros comes out to about $800 USD, which is MSRP. it's the same in every country. however, the sale price is dictated by the people you elect into public office.

Yea, people are nuts. The people paying these prices are the main reason why scalpers are doing this shit. There was one guy on eBay, that I saw, who sold more than 50 3080s since November. Probably banked $50,000 usd from 3080s alone. Didn’t even count his sold 3070/3090 listings.

First they introduce the beta test overpriced cards, 6 months later 25% faster supers at the same price. Adding insult to injury paying triple Msrp. No way. 3090 is the next 4070. They don't even care about games anymore, mostly data centers. I sold my card because I couldn't get anything done. turns out I still can't even with that distraction out of the way, wth. But Why should I have to pay the price, they have to pay me for wasting my productive years. why why.

I never pay for anything above MSRP regardless of component. I am happy with the performance of my TITAN XP paired with MSI Optix MAG321. My current setup provides me with excellent 2K gaming experience or while using Samsung Odyssey Plus. Besides I can always OC my CPU and/or TITAN Xp for some extra performance. This price hike does not affect me what so ever since I already have a spare 2700x and GTX 1080 Ti collecting dust.

Just for fun I visited EVGA, MSI, Zotec, Palet, Asrock, AMD, Nvidia, Sapphire and Gigabyte. Everything we all would consider powerful gaming cards is out of stock. Amazing!

If the situation doesn't improve eventually the PC gaming market will start shrinking with that the game developer profits as well something will have to change otherwise services like Stadia will take over.

tech companies has been pushing people to cloud computing anyways.. apparently spending 1000$+ for a machine that can handle anywhere from browsing, programming to scientific research and gaming for a few years is unreasonable, and we should all be paying per hour for using someone else's hardware, after signing some T&C ofc.

Even CP2077 which is the buggiest, heaviest game to date will run on mid-range laptop graphics like the 4500U's Vega6 or 1135g7's Xe 80EU. No it's not 4K120 with raytracing but it's better than either of the last-gen console experiences.

What's interesting is most RX 580's are selling out on ebay for $400 to $500+ so much desperation in the market place for a GPU and people are willing to spend an arm | leg on them.

Americans may never understand this, but paying over MSRP is like the normal thing in Asian countries, especially for high end graphic cards.
I mean, even before this price inflation happened, >US$900 and $1700 is the normal price for the cheapest Zotac 3080 and 3090.

that's not to say whether or not CP2077 is worth getting in its current state. there's also a lot of folks with the eternal 630/530/620/520 from Intel. (esp. since there has been a decline of zen2 laptop silicon recently/Lenovo removed pretty much all the zen2 laptop in my country/Aus)
I fear moreso that as hardware becomes scarce people will be pushed towards cloud computing.
I suppose when if crypto still is in a state where it doesn't do good (doesn't get used irl and just hogs hardware and electricity) in a few years, DDR5 would be able to carry iGPU's to 1050 level. in front of AAA's thats still 720p60. (PS4 and XONE has massive bandwidth/power envelope advantage here)
(I can't believe I'm saying this) Intel is doing god's work (in a world where AMD literally cannot cater to lower margin APUs) with their iGPUs... imagine me saying this years ago(Iris 5200) and even myself would shoot myself in the back.

We literally have limited importer & distributor, like maybe only 1 for each brand, and all computer shops across the country get supply from that distributor.

I got lucky and paid 100 more for my RT 6800 and than prices went trough the roof now its like I saved 900 bucks should sell my xfx 5600 xt for a profit but I have to live with my self but it only spent a month in my rig. looking today you can't find a gt 710 in store
