Missing memory ( ram )

AsRock , the R9-280 has UEFI ready right on the box . If HD5870 , their first gen DX11 card works , i wonder why this one doesnt ? Oh yeah , it works on UEFI mode on one of my friend's Maximus V Formula . Yes , no dead slots , i've tested everything . I even removed the BIOS battery as a last hope . No way , the board is dead . Military Standards , right ? Claims EMP protection and Anti-Surge support . A single power loss and the mobo is toast . Lol , EMP .

And i've had it with XFX also . They've forced me to buy another card while the HD5870 with the broken fan was still under 1 year of warranty left . "We don't have any cooling fan in our deposits " . They told me to contact the reseller too . I mean , i bought it on eBay , from a italian shop . I have all the papers , everything . The italians don't answer the phone nor replying to my e-mail . Should i travel to Italy now for a broken fan or spend 100 $ on a retail cooler instead of adding 84 $ more and get the R9 ? Plus a XFX Warpad and 150 $ worth game coupon . So i got the R9 and dumped the 5870 . But i loved that card .

Have you tried to pull out the CMOS battery, wait an hour, put it back in and before even booting to Windows go right in the BIOS? If you still only have 4GB then this is hardware related or the motherboard BIOS is bad.

I dismantled the TUF Armor as a last resort . What do you know , it was the first time i've removed it and when i put it back , one screw got screwed , lol . The plastic hole enlarged when i removed the screw and now , a screw is floating free in it's hole . This is what i was afraid and it happened . A good reason to deny warranty .

A lot of company's don't support ebay sales so not really a XFX at fault.

Any problems i have had with a XFX product has been more than i could ask for. For example i had a XFX 4890 which when i put the cooler back on as i was using a 3rd party one ( allowed in the US ). There was a fan issue and i had a buyer lined up for it and i was able to send it to XFX and have them send the buyer the card which i believe he received a 6870 if i remember right.

If you got the card from XFX or a XFX respected seller you would not likely be having this issue.

I know if i had to RMA one of my XFX cards there be the typical things to check and they would ask me to send it to them, they would not ask me send it back to Amazon or Newegg or who ever, just them.

You checked with XFX if there been a update for it ?, or if they could put more insight on your issue with the 280.

I don't see the point of maintaining a support site and pay at least an extra guy ( which by the way i am not sure it's not a robot ) , if they don't offer any support . I don't need a support site to tell me that i can contact the reseller or to check for a new bios . The card was brand new , unused , sealed package . When i've registered it on their support site , i had to provide the card's unique serial number , which i did . When i did this , their website told me exactly the name of the store and the location . So it wasn't a random seller . But no , XFX have this guy , Wade . The only thing he knows is "please contact the reseller" . Now who in this damn world was more entitled to provide a new bios than them ? Since when Newegg have the newest bioses and the manufacturers don't ? Bear in mind that on the R9 there's no AMD print down there , it's XFX .

And i am not 100 % sure if the R9-280 is not my Sabertooth's cause of death , because everything was fine until i got the R9 and installed it . First , no UEFI , then , in less than 2 weeks , i got this ram problem and a dead pci-ex slot .

also I had a hard time believing they told you to buy a new gpu simply due to a out of stock cooler I have had them pull coolers off working stock to replace parts before ...
it doesn't matter if you bought it from ebay sealed BNIB they are not a authorized retailer and thus xfx have no way of knowing if the card was tampered with seals can be faked
also mixing and matching ram is never guaranteed to work .ever. So you have little ground to stand on when asking for support I am 90% sure your missing ram issue has nothing todo with the lack of a GOP bios for the card

No , they didn't told me . I said they've forced me to buy another one , considering that a Arctic Cooling Accelero costs like 100 $ here . I was unable to find a dead HD5870 to get the fan blower from it and put it on my 5870 , because that died . Ball bearing crashed or something . The italian shop was an authorized retailer , it's NEXT HARDWARE & SOFTWARE SPA , nexths.it .

I find it odd that he did not ask you to return it to them. I had a black screen issue ( not like most though this was due to the PCI-e connector ) which was solved by cleaning the slot and resetting the card which since never had a issue, how ever they did ask me if i would like to send the card in to have it checked out and i would only have to pay postage one way.

Have you found anyone else having a issue with that card and motherboard ?. And i think he is some one right to tell you to send it back to were you got it as i know i would of done to save cost.

AsRock , i also have a Silverstone Strider Plus 750 W which is too big for my case and i use it for testing systems and so . It doesn't work with that either . On the other hand , like i've mentioned before , this PSU handled a GTX295 for more than two years without a problem , and thats a 289 W TDP card .

OneMoar , i was unable to find a fan blower at that time and assuming that the card was still under warranty , i used it for like 10-12 months , i've asked them guys at XFX support to find a suitable fan blower which i wanted to pay for and for the shipment , because i really liked the 5870 . It was a good card and it still is , but they said they don't have any fan blowers in their warehouses . So i was kinda forced to buy another card , the R9 , for 196 $ than to spend 100 $ on a retail cooling system . I am not running different kits , i am running exactly the same kits , the SPD report is wrong . That's what this thread was all about .

if you read the fine print it says the warranty coverage may very by location and every single vendor has a clause like that

OneMoar , as far as i am aware , they are selling their products here . I was talking about Amazon and Newegg . The eBay seller of the HD5870 shipped the card to me , no problems , as i live in Europe and they are from Italy . Also , the main XFX support site is EU , afaik . Anyway , regarding my memory kits , check these . Am i using different kits ? I guess not . I don't want to argue XFX's reputation , i had enough . It's not my duty as a consumer to pay for a damaged part of a product that's still under warranty . But i offered myself to pay just to repair the 5870 , that is .

OneMoar , I have already told you that i've tried to contact NEXTHS IT and they didn't answer . This was the reason i brought it to the XFX support . The reply was the usual "contact the reseller" . Well , if the warranty coverage may vary depending on location , i want different prices too . Because you see , the R9 costs here 400 E . It's more than double that i've paid for the entire package on Newegg . Yeah , i know , it's not XFX's fault that i live in a poor country . P.S. My R9 is using the latest bios , 015.047.000.001 .

No papers or warranty on it . The laptop died . I've called Dell Support , the next day some tech guy called me and asked for the Service Tag . I gave it to him and he said , ok , your laptop is on a next business day warranty plan , i will pick it up tomorrow . He came the next day , travelled 70 km to me , took the laptop with him , replaced the dead mobo and the display and brought it back . It didn't cost me a dime . They didn't asked for certificates or other papers . I was ashamed and invited him inside for a coffee . He said he can't stay because he has to go to another customer . Now THAT is real support . DELL do that although they get send shit techs if a DELL tech is not local to you. I had to stop the one who came our house who wanted to plaster the cpu and 1/2 the mobo with a tube of that crap that use as thermal paste.

He warmed me that will void the warranty i told him i don't care as it only had 2 months on it still and did not want all that crap all over the place inside.

I passed him some MX and he said he was not allowed to use it, so we hit a agreement that i put the MX on it and put the cooler back on and he put it back together.


And OMG you had it from Newegg like what the hell just tell them and they will send your money back to ya if it's within a month they some times allow a few days longer.

If it''s in that time get in touch with newegg explain it to them and see if they can find a newer revision of the card for you or just get ya money back.


Again UEFI it's not needed and don't give any benefits anyways

Techs and techs , AsRock , but i was talking about their policy . They could have denied warranty from the start as i had no papers and all , but they didn't . Now , i am not sure that the R9 is bad , it works in legacy mode tho and i won't be able to find a good card for that price . I will wait until monday , when the Asus P8BWS arrives . If the card acts the same on that too , i will return it . Yes , i need UEFI , it's faster , especially on normal hard drives . I was running FreeBSD on UEFI mode on one of my hard drives and i can feel the difference .

Hey stelly, first welcome to TPU. I've read through the entire thread and its not right or ok to what the support from both ASUS and XFX have done to you. I if possible we are to help you find a solution for your memory issue as that was/is the main reason for the thread, allow me to get off topic for a bit.

I currently reside in Kenya and getting support from most international companies is a headache and also from local resellers. That's why for several years I've been a loyal Intel customer when it comes to motherboards & processors unfortunately they stopped producing desktop boards, 8 series was the last.

90% of the time that i have had to deal with Intel support about a product that may or may not be defective, I've always gotten a solution or closure to the problem from the Intel support and i do this directly with them. One can contact any support portal then the rep will redirect you to the appropriate region if need be, I have RMA'd a total of 3 Intel desktop boards from Kenya directly to Intel as per the request from Intel to find out whats going on with the particular boards and in all the instances got a brand new replacement board from Intel all within a span of 5 days i ship to them and they ship back a new part within those 5 to 7 days, I've also recently last year replaced my i7-4770K when i thought the IMC was going bad after an Intel rep suggested it might be the IMC, they suggested that i send the CPU to them and i received a new i7-4770K in its retail package, turned out that the CPU's IMC was not going bad, and it was a BIOS issue and still was in contact with support who told me to hang on while they try to solve the issue which was narrowed down to BIOS as i had told them it was a BIOS issue initially but they needed to isolate and confirm the issue, so they developed some new BIOS revisions which solved the issues i had and the issues went away.

Those times that I've had to RMA Intel took care of all the shipping expenses from my end and their end too, by providing me with some DHL Express accounts for the shipping process from me to the indicated depot that they provide in the RMA info/email.

The RMA email also contains the unique serial number and details of the product that I'm to return to Intel and also contains info for the replacement part that I'm to receive, i normally have a window of 60 days to accept the whole transaction or its canceled after 60 days, and after I'll have to reapply/restart the process a fresh.

So sad they had to stop Desktop Board development, still looking around for the next suitable upgrade path for me.

To get back on point/purpose of this thread I'll read through the thread and try and provide information that may or may not help, hopefully the info will help.

Hi Protagonist , thank you for your warm welcome and infos . I was using also only Intel motherboards , the last was a D975XBX2 ( Bad Axe 2 ) and a Q6600 , that i was using since 2006 to 2012 . Then i got the Sabertooth , as a gift , otherwise i wouldn't have changed socket . I was very pleased with my old workstation as i'm not a gamer . I play like two games , Crysis and Darksiders , that is . I know what are you talking about and this is how it should be , they have to stand behind their products regardless if they are located anywhere than the place of purchase , that's the purpose of international warranty , if i am not wrong and my english is that bad . It's too late anyway , i already bought another motherboard as i need my computer for work , but i didn't go for high-end , i can't afford . A person that works 3 shifts in a factory here , gets 200 $ / month , if lucky . This is not about the money , but what about the amount represents . I wonder if anyone in here would spend his monthly salary for a mobo that dies or a gfx that dies and gets no warranty . I'm gonna end up manufacturing my own hardware , ffs . Yeah , i've tried to get my hands on a Intel Z77 mobo , but i couldn't find them anymore . Not for the price i've paid for the P8B WS . I hope that this C206 board will last longer that the highly acclaimed TUF SERIES . I've discussed with Asus , they assigned an idiot ( i beg your pardon ) to ask me once at 48hrs , what is my memory model or if i use the latest bios . I've told him from the start that the machine ran up just fine for at least 2 years or more with these modules and that i am already using the latest bios . I didn't changed anything but video cards . Asus' support is lame . XFX support website is a bad joke too . That is .

Also off-topic , Protagonist , i'm an occasional angler . I had a similar dispute regarding a poorly made reel made by Maver UK . Mr. Phil Briscoe , the Maver UK M.D. contacted me to apologize and offered me two , not one , of their top of the range reels . This impressed me . I didn't wanted something i didn't pay for . I wanted the reel i paid for but they couldn't provide me another one so they gave me some choices . I went for a match rod , same price , but this shows how someone knows to conduct business . ASUS and XFX think they are too big to fall . Well , i've seen bigger ones .

ensure that the limit memory option hasn't been enabled somehow
timings are identical unsure why hwmonitor was reporting incorrectly
also ensure the IGPu is disabled
also try roating the dimms
swap dimm 1 with dimm 4 and dimm 3 with dimm 2
if you haven't already tried that pull the cpu and reinstall it
metal fatigue in the pins does happen

P67 doesn't support iGPU . It cannot be enabled . I've did everything you asked , no result . And even the memory limit was enabled on Windows , this shouldn't affect the BIOS , especially that i am running legacy bios . I have rotated the dimms , checked every dimm on every slot , then all combinations . No chance to go higher than 4096 . I took the dimms to a friend's yesterday . He has a Intel motherboard , X38 chipset ( socket 775 ) . All dimms were detected . Ram is in order . According to Intel's Processor Diagnostic Tool , cpu is also fine . I've cleaned the slots with compressed air and the dimms with isopropilic alcohol . Check the pins , they are fine , i don't see how could they get damaged while i never took out the cpu . I removed the TUF Armor and extracted the BIOS battery . Waited 30 mins and put it back . Still on 4096 , mobo is toast .

It's the same bug on BIOS , also . Main info shows 4096 mb , but Asus SPD tool founded also in BIOS shows that every slot is populated with 2048 mb . There is a single chance , to find another Sabertooth , remove the BIOS chip , save the firmware and rewrite it physically on my BIOS chip . I can do that but icba , there's too much hassle . I'm getting the P8BWS on monday and thus ends my experience with Asus .

I don't know much about ASUS but try this if you haven't already:

If there is an way to roll back BIOS on your motherboard roll back to as far as it can allow.

Remove all memory modules and only use one memory module, preferably in the second memory slot from the CPU.

I guess it will be the first BIOS that brought support for the 3rd Gen CPU.

Then after if it accepts to roll back restore default then add the other memory modules and check if it factions correctly, if it does then remove them and retain only one and update the BIOS gradually to the latest one then add back the memory and see if it functions correctly.

I don't know much about ASUS but try this if you haven't already:

I already did that , Protagonist . No results . And the rollback is tricky , it doesn't allow me to roll back the first bios that supports Ivy . It's says " Bios is outdated" when i tried to . Only the previous bios can be installed , the 3302 , but there's no changes . I just removed the R9-280 and put a GTS250 . No way . Only 4096 mb . Thank you for the suggestion , i've tried almost everything . I got tired of this . I removed the R9-280 because i was afraid not to fry it too , as the secondary PCI-Ex slot isn't working anymore . I'm gonna wait until my new motherboard arrives and that's it . Maybe i'll try a physical firmware update , but there's a lot of work for that and i'm not really in the mood now . I'm tired . There was a storm like 1 week ago or more and i've noticed some very quick power losses . The computer didn't seem to be affected , as i am using a UPS , but the sound system went down and up for a couple of times and also the lights . Maybe that corrupted the firmware .
