My expectation was a repeat of Navi 21 vs. GA102, so the very least on par with AD102 with the usual pitfalls that renders it the runner-up.
GA102 was faster than Navi21 most of the time and rarely on par, which is exactly what you'd expect looking at the specifications of each chip.

And it's the same story with Navi31 and AD102, 61 TFLOPs vs 82 TFLOPs, they're both dual-issue architectures, so roughly 35% difference in pure compute performance, TPU puts the 4090 at 22% faster in raster. So, as I said, more or less what to be expected.

As it stands, the 7900 XTX consumes more power than the RTX 4090 (provided you don't buy an artificially limited, 2x 8-pin model, by the way - I can make the argument that my 3090 "only" uses 375W too, but you are leaving performance on the table), and performs substantially worse than it does in its already hilariously cut down configuration.
As you know the reference model does not consume more power than the FE 4090. And who is to say it's artificially limited by the 2x8 pin, I see no real evidence for that. Most AIBs that ship with 3x8 pin do not overclock any better than reference models, it wouldn't make sense anyway because they all have the same +15% power limit limitation as far as I know.

How can someone be an Nvidia fanboy ?
Nvidia is a very “anti-consumer” company.
No one could be “in love” with them. Their price policy is awful, they are greedy, they don’t care about customers at all.

The problem is there is no alternative. AMD is not. Their products are just not good enough, and not reliable for generic users. Yes, their price policy is much better BUT it is only because their market share is irrelevant. Lisa Su already demonstrated with CPU that once they are no more the “little AMD”, their price policy become identical of the competitor’s.

I was hoping on Intel as a competitor, but their start wasn’t exactly stellar. So I’m buying Nvidia products because there is no alternative on the market, not because I like them. They probably are the worst Company on the market.
There's nothing RDNA2 or 3 don't run, honestly you're pulling this quite a bit out of proportion.

Agree on a slightly lower driver TLC regime at AMD, but there's nothing game breaking in there right now. Just situational performance hits and frankly they happen on Nvidia too.

Oh, and TPU? Please be less liberal with your Editor's Choice awards. The only Lovelace card that has truly earned it is the 4090. All the others are great cards with the wrong prices.
I can't disagree with that. The 4090 is an outstanding, untouchable piece of hardware at the price people expected to be.

The 4070 is a competent, efficient GPU with some concerns about the useful longevity of its VRAM size and a price that is definitely on the higher side of acceptable, since it can barely justify its cost against other things in its performance tier. That's not an Editor's Choice award to me, but I'm not the editor. I would say that giving out too many EC awards does dilute the value of them.

are grave mistakes LOL.
Oh no, not grave mistakes really, but the rationale behind choices is interesting to me. They vary to all of us, but most people do share a common distaste for paying too much for an item. That's really what most of the competition on GPU revolves around today. Differences, quite minute, but of some importance. And then IF you generally pay too much, it becomes that much more interesting (to me at least) to really get the most bang for buck.

No wonder AMD isn't releasing any mid range products, their old, cheap to manufacture cards can more than handle Nvidia's mid range BS.
Not sure I'd call the 6950XT cheap to manufacture.
  • 375W card and cooler
  • 15+3 phase, high-end VRM using expensive Infineon controllers
    8 premium 18Gbps GDDR6 modules
  • Massive 520 mm² die that definitely costs plenty to make, and yields of such a huge die will be exponentially lower compared to a 300 mm² die like the 4070.
It costs €690 because that's where it performs in today's market. It's definitely not cheap to manufacture though.

Obviously they are testing the market. +55% 2070 to 3070, now + 26% performance 3070 to 4070. But as we know, after a weak generation comes a strong generation and then again a regression to the means.

6800 XT it is then.

Smart buyers who bought 7900XT at 900usd, only for them to drop to 800usd in a month :D, could be 700usd next month, who knows.

Man let hope 7900XT/X last a long time, because their resale value are going down the toilet
That relevant.

I never understand why people care so much what others purchase like he is paying your Energy bills.

As for no good reason time will tell I would have a concern with buying a 12GB gpu today.

The poll on the front page interesting indeed!

You do realize that people who buy 4070 can just sell it after 2 years and buy the next 600usd GPU that are faster and more power efficient right? no one is forced to keep using one GPU for a long time, unless the resale price fell into the gutter.

Future proofing electronic is kinda a scam

Definitely. But Ive been a PC gamer for over 25 years, and downloading cracked games is even cheaper than Xbox GP while I can still play at Ultra settings.
you should stop downloading cracked games beacuse:
a) it's the reason PC gaming is slowly dying
b) people working on those games need to be paid
c) it's illegal

interesting indeed, as it is a demonstration on how the user base of this forum is not a good representation about the real world scenario... In a few months the 4070 will sell more than all the Radeon included in that list, aggregated.

This thread should be proof that if not generally pro-AMD, the TPU readership is at a minimum, anti-Nvidia.

It's a sentiment I genuinely share myself, I just place cost in front of that regardless.

Not sure I'd call the 6950XT cheap to manufacture.
  • 375W card and cooler

It costs €690 because that's where it performs in today's market. It's definitely not cheap to manufacture though.
you are absolutely right. 6950XT surely isn't cheap to manufacture for AMD, and its current price point is not even related to performance, but to low demand.
But we don't know if AMD is currently still manufacturing the 6950XT GPU or they are just selling stock leftovers.

If $50 in electricity is a problem you shouldn't be spending $600 on a video card. Period.
I think power use is yet another factor that should definitely weigh in on the total cost of the deal. Its cost of ownership after all that matters.

The elephant in the room is RDNA2 versus 3. That's a huge efficiency gap there. Similarly, and even more so, Ampere vs Ada.

I'm glad NV finally dumped Samsung's Trash node they used on the 3000 series power usage on 4000 series looks good. And makes you wonder had NV had access to 7nm TSMC what would the 3000 series have looked like.

OT, but prices went up significantly here in Brazil as well, hermano. Factorio developer went particularly ham, raised prices by more than 100% from 50,00 to 101,99 BRL. Nah, I don't care how good your game is, I won't support that, my backlog is large enough.

Coupling high GPU prices with rising software costs has really hurt the South American market, and I say this from the point of view of someone whose bulk of expenses is upgrading my computer, I live quite a frugal life otherwise.

You do realize that people who buy 4070 can just sell it after 2 years and buy the next 600usd GPU that are faster and more power efficient right? no one is forced to keep using one GPU for a long time, unless the resale price fell into the gutter.

Future proofing electronic is kinda a scam
Yeah yeah, that's clearly why I managed to game at 4k for 5 years right , by choosing wise.

99.8% buy when dead to them IE useless.

.02% buy as your suggesting soooo there is that about your perspective that's wrong.

You can doesn't equal the masses will OR SHOULD.

I reiterate I don't buy EWaste on purpose, and I try to avoid such.

you should stop downloading cracked games beacuse:
a) it's the reason PC gaming is slowly dying
b) people working on those games need to be paid
c) it's illegal

interesting indeed, as it is a demonstration on how the user base of this forum is not a good representation about the real world scenario... In a few months the 4070 will sell more than all the Radeon included in that list, aggregated.
I partially agree with you, dont you think that they make more than enough money anyway? Only a small percent (compared with what it used to be) are downloading cracked games now and a big part of them are people that cannot afford to buy those games so they would not have bought them anyway. Many of the games have online features now (that dont work in the cracked versions) and some of the people that are playing the cracked game get hooked with it and they will buy it for the online features even if they didn't intend to buy it in the first place.

Here's a take, following that logic, by buying AMD you buy e-Waste, point in case, Nvidia aren't the ones abandoning their graphics cards after barely 5 years. R9 Fury X buyers will have a word with you on that one. ;)

I think power use is yet another factor that should definitely weigh in on the total cost of the deal. Its cost of ownership after all that matters.

The elephant in the room is RDNA2 versus 3. That's a huge efficiency gap there. Similarly, and even more so, Ampere vs Ada.

For me at least assuming both cards perform similarly I would still go with the one that consumes less power assuming all other performance metrics where equal like RT performance etc

I have no issue with my 4090 consuming 400w of power but I would have issues with a 6950XT using 350w and giving me it's performance in 2023 it has nothing to do with what they actually consume and more to do with what I'm getting in return for that power consumption

Same with the 4070 vs the 6800XT what am I getting for that extra 100w... much less RT performance, worse upscaling, but an extra 4GB of vram for me it isn't worth the 100 usd ish savings to others it might be.

I'm not talking about 2020 or even 2021 when most likely bought these cards if you got it this year that kinda sucks but at least you got a big discount.
