NVIDIA Pulls GeForce 364.47 WHQL Driver Over Critical Bugs, Outs 364.51 Beta

NVIDIA today pulled its latest GeForce 364.47 WHQL drivers for shipping with a critical bug in its installers that causes Windows to crash. Users swarmed to the company's official GeForce Forums to report the bug to NVIDIA. Among the problems included a crash each time the machine wakes up from Sleep mode. A company rep responded that NVIDIA was able to internally reproduce the issue, and was working on a solution.

NVIDIA has meanwhile pulled 364.47 WHQL from its website, and is recommending users to either clean-install an older version of the driver, such as the 362.00 WHQL, or upgrade to the newer 364.51 Beta Drivers. Version 364.51 Beta can be downloaded from the links below. The rest of its feature-set appears to be identical to the 364.47 WHQL.

I've been treating beta drivers as final for ages. Never had problems. In fact WHQL drivers caused problems more often than beta ones...

I wish this happened back when people even made news articles over AMD not having WHQL for that 9 month period, because as is now abundantly clear - WHQL means squat.

I'm sure people questioned the validity of WHQL drivers even back then, as constant revisions had to be made.

Yep so paying microsoft to certify for that oh so cool WHQL means nothing about the quality of the driver.

Hopefully people who have been caught out by this dogy driver can get their pc's going again asap.

Always sad when nvida or amd have this kind of thing happen. Having to re-install windows is a massive pain.

if the driver you are using works it probably makes sense to to keep using it.. i think the whole driver update game is a bit of a gimmick and one that carries the odd risk..

some folks feel compelled to do it.. i try and avoid it.. tis hard though.. he he

at least by holding back for a while i have avoided this issue..

I am a new user of Nvidia, I have my 970 just over a year. before that always used AMD / ATI ... for about 3 years using AMD I never had problems or bugs due to drivers ... since I bought my first Nvidia already had at least three serious problems after driver updates. At least the performance and power consumption of the card is better, but in a matter of drivers nvidia is horrible.

This is why I stick with a good driver for a good bit, and only upgrade to a new one (but not the latest), after I have seen it working well for awhile with other people.

I personally uses more Nvidia Beta drivers than WHQL drivers on my rig at home wierdly enough but i guess i like to have the newest drivers for the newest games i play

This is a massive and unacceptable lack of quality control on nVIDIA's part. Truly disappointing considering how good and frequent their releases have been for the past year. Now is not the time to drop the ball.

Its funny, give it time and I am sure it will be back to the same old debate or the same arguments.

Funny enough, the previous driver on my laptop for some reason started crashing constantly (It was 1 update older) and would not let league of legends load up. I had to quickly do an update to this version and that fixed the issue for me (Was trying to get into a game LOL). Did not try waking my laptop up from sleep but I didn't have any problems with this driver version though for the heck of it I will update just in case.

You are obviously a new user, period.
AMD/ATI has had their share of driver issues for more than a decade.

I did a refresh of checking for updates on the Geforce Experience and saw it available when I was having issues. That's how I got it but I didn't have any issue with it on my laptop (Though I only played games and turned the laptop on and off).

Most of us do, its those few that make it sounds like its special or the greatest thing since sliced bread .

Oh well, either way its fixed so ill give it a download once I get home.

I call it the Mandrake syndrome (as in Mandrake/Madriva/Mageia Linux). Everything is great during the betas. Then they inevitably break something critical at the last moment, and release it totally fubar broken.
