I think I'll take the 4 points I have, and hit Thick Skin for an 16% bump (and +4% more next point), and then work my way towards Constitution and the surrounds for 49% more. That will take me a few levels tho
I'll just end up farming the gear to add some health in until I get there
. I don't expect to do much in higher tier maps for a bit. I always hated rushing towards an end goal in a game. Once I do that, I lose all motivation to continue. So, I'll just enjoy the ride along the way
Man, 200% is a SERIOUS stretch. I don't know how people manage that while still attempting to get anything useful from the Tree. I'm at 77% off the tree, plus the random +10 to life here and there, and it'll be 12 points dedicated to just stretching out for that 49% at Constitution....
180-200% is more realistic for most builds, but yes, its achievable and it takes 34-40 nodes of 5%, or less than that if you have higher % nodes in there which most class starts do have somewhere. A really great source of LOTS of health is the marauder side, or the duelist side, and the best of them all is the Scion. But all three can easily access that massive block of health nodes bottomleft of Scion. It can be a really smart move to at least have a road leading up to there, pick up 2 nodes including the big one, and let the rest sit there until you feel you get oneshot again. If you are say, level 75, then at that point anything you do should be going into defense, jewel slots, and optimization. If you are still working on base damage/weapon damage nodes or key nodes, that's generally wrong. By this point you also shouldn't have any difficult pathways to carve in the tree to 'get to places'. That last bit also plays into not having to struggle with your base Str/Int/Dex all the time when levelling.
Note: even for ranged classes going duelist is a really good idea because you get boatloads of physical damage nodes and you're in a great position on the tree to stack things, while Ranger isn't too far off. Not many ranged bow builds need to go towards Shadow, so its worth studying the specializations for Duelist as well and not tunnel vision on having that Ranger for a ranged build. PoE is much more flexible than that. Another cool thing about Duelist is that you're also close to Iron Reflexes and things like Point Blank which synergize well with dex/ranged builds. Alternatively, consider a Scion, it has light-versions that mix and match all specializations for each class, so it works for everything, but is a bit less min-maxy of nature.
That leaves you over 60 nodes to spend on other things, a big part going into your overall pathway to good stuff. So yes, the passive tree is ALL ABOUT efficiency and planning.
If you make a health based build, the first order of business is planning your starting class + Specialization along with a good passive path along those health nodes. The rest comes after that. If you base your planning on getting the EHP (effective HP) up, its hard to go wrong and you also save yourself tons of Regrets along the way. You can wiggle around with damage, but not with health, and you're very likely to get damage increases not from the tree but from gear and skillgems.
A note on EHP: effective HP can also be increased by dramatically increasing the
value of a single hit point. Most notably through armor and resistances, but also % reduced damage nodes for example. Every type of mitigation adds value to every hit point you have, making it the best way to scale up your toughness. Health scales linearly, but armor acts as a multiplier.
Don't like this tight planning around HP??? Then roll your ranged toon as an Evasion/Dodge guy, don't take the Ritalin, and play PoE like a twitch shooter
Another option is ES, but that involves a lot of new mechanics too and is pretty advanced + you can't be in the bottom half of the passive tree; a Shadow or Templar work well with that, and yes, even with ranged builds you can do this.
Here 's an example of a passive tree for a claw based melee Shadow, with IR and therefore pretty close to what you could get - it has 169% HP. And this is far from optimal, just a theorized build of mine that I'll probably never do. But still gives a good picture
