During the PS3 generation, Sony was producing a lot of games. Naughty Dog alone made Uncharted, Uncharted 2, Uncharted 3, and The Last of Us. Now ND hasn't produced a single PS5 exclusive title except a remake of The Last of Us because the remaster they did last time wasn't enough flogging the dead horse.

When Sony wanted a decent chunk of change for a PS3 new out the gate, at least they made lots and lots of games for it. The PS5 generation has been a disaster in terms of next gen exclusives. Hell, we all keep calling PS5 "next gen" because the generation doesn't ever seem like it's going to actually start. Most games are still coming to PS4. The PS5 Pro is just an act of desperation to get the diehards to buy the hardware again with a price that nets them pure profit off hardware. Imagine you're the dev's now having to support PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5, PS5 Pro, and the rumored PS Portable just to support Playstation.

And all this is so unlike the PS3. That was an actually aspirational device that was trying to, foolishly or no, put hardware that could actually provide better games. The PS5 Pro is a vanity project and a terrible one. They've concluded their user base has plateaued and making games is something they rarely do now, so the only option left is to sell new hardware to the same base.

Just buy a PC if you're going to spend $780 plus stand cost to buy a console and count four years of no online sub as part of the total you get to spend on your PC.

Exactly my point. Why would you buy a super fast, shiny, truly next-gen console for any price if there's no game for it?

Not always, I posted a like earlier in thread, where Sony raised the PS5 price in many regions but kept it at launch price in the USA.

I think originally for the disc version it was $499 compared to £449. But then later they changed it to 499 for both.
PS3 launch price relevant to this thread was I think $599 and £425 for the 60 gig version. (granted the first USA model was better).

I dont know what £425 translates to for an inflation adjusted number, but it is a much lower base point, and the UK cost of the PS5 Pro is higher so its a larger gap. Even if were to ignore the subsidised USA pricing model, the PS5 Pro is still incomplete, buying the stand and optical separate still should be factored in.

Is it though? This generation has been strange on the console front. In most regions, the PS5 is more expensive now than it was at launch. I don't think any of the consoles have actually gotten a price cut. Nintendo introduced the Switch Lite at a lower MSRP but it has reduced functionality. The standard Switch model is the same price now as it was in 2017.
Ehh what? PS5 is like half the price now, compared to launch.

the PS5 Pro is still incomplete, buying the stand and optical separate still should be factored in.

I think the comparison and justification that PS3 cost this much some time back but due to inflation you pay actually this much is misleading. You would need to put into consideration, how much you have earned or at least how many of the PS3's you would be able to purchase for minimum wage back then vs today. Cause I seriously doubt, ps5 pro is cheaper now in a sense, your purchasing power due to inflation has drastically dropped since the wage to inflation ratio has not been rectified.

This thread is Sony trying to justify ripping people off.
Well you really are paying less etc, then selling what used to be included as extras for an even greater rip off.
I'm glad they don't sell cars, I like mine to have all the parts required to drive them.

I generally view any "Pro" or halfway refresh models pointless mostly due to the fact that the next gen are always right around the corner and rarely do they make a huge difference in the current gen games. This is due to the fact that they have to make the games run on the lower hardware. Its currently the issue with Microsoft because the Series S is so much weaker than the X even though the X is more powerful than the PS5.
PS6 is like 2028+ and first few years will be meh as usual in the console space. Getting a new console gen on release day is the worst feeling, limited games, lacks exclusives, OS running in beta build and lack of features. This was true for both PS5 and XSX as well.

PS4 Pro was great compared to PS4 for people with a 4K/UHD TV. Well even for 1080p users. Tons of games took advantage of the extra power and many games offered 60 fps option instead of 30. Boost mode helped in games that were not PS4 Pro enhanced, simply offering higher fps with less dips. 30 or 60 fps locked instead of dips to 20/40. I know, because I had a PS4 and then a PS4 Pro, worth every penny.

PS5 Pro will deliver a nice jump for people that care. GTA6 will run way better on this than base PS5 for sure. Maybe even at 60 fps instead of 30 fps.

Making it digital only tho, is a bummer. The add-on drive is ruining the design for me.

Developers don't really care about XSS, most games just run worse on it. They prioritize PS5 and XSX, which are the baseline. XSS just runs games at lower res, lower fps, lower settings, the CPU inside XSS is pretty much identical so its mostly GPU and MEM meaning you just lower settings or use a lower resolution scale.

Very easy to do actually. XSS was mostly about selling gamepasses tho.

While I agree with this sentiment, there are other things to consider:
1. For this price, you get a system fully capable of playing games with a 7800 XT level GPU in it. I don't think you could get a 7800 XT and build an entire system around it for this price.
2. Is there any single game that only plays on the PS5 Pro, and not the regular PS5? If not, then why would you want to fork out the cash for the Pro in the first place? You're perfectly fine saving your money instead.

PS3 60GB's price of 599EUR from 2007 seems to translate into 827EUR in today's money. PS5 Pro's MSRP is 799EUR, so that's not much of a difference. :D

Is there any game that runs on the GTX 4080 but not on the GTX 4060 ?

I mean, I always aim at $300 GPUs (AMD's 7600 or NVidia 4060). Because I usually favor that argument. But many PC Builders want more than that.

Their "making amends" was literally saying an apology and bowing, and firing Kutaragi.

The revised models all had features removed (no PS2 compat, no SACD support, no memory card reader, less ports). The only up sides were that they came with a controller that had rumble, and by the slim models they stopped releasing the console with self destructing CPU and GPU.
Despite all that, the price ultimately came down,how will they reduce the price on the PS5 pro? They already have it with no stand and no optical drive, this is a big difference, it isnt coming down.

PS3 controllers also were better quality than PS5 controllers.

XSS just runs games at lower res, lower fps, lower settings, the CPU inside XSS is pretty much identical so its mostly GPU and MEM meaning you just lower settings or use a lower resolution scale.

Very easy to do actually. XSS was mostly about selling gamepasses tho.

Xbox may push forward with a whole new console because of this in that time depending on how PS5 Pro goes. But generally its about 3 years between a new console after pro versions. The other problem is pricing of this one compared to how pricing of pro version were in the past. There are always growing pains with any console regardless if its a whole new one or a 'Pro' version.

PS4 Pro just upscaled, just like One X did. A better experience I mean sure, however you are still hampered by the old consoles because those are the primary ones they focus development on. Yes some developers will put effort in, but alot of the games 'enhanced modes' were not perfect because they were not optimized for those consoles.

Sure, but I guarantee you Rockstar has not even though much about the PS5 Pro while working on the game. Even if they were handed one a year ago, their focus is going to be on the PS5 and the Series X (While also having to figure out a way to drop down enough to make the Series S run).

Meh, I don't care as much as I did because its happening one way or another. Sadly disc tech is too far behind so the disk are just base game storage at this point.

They actually have to care if they want to release on Xbox. Microsoft made it where you cannot release a game that does not run on the Series S. Hence why some AAA games have had delayed Xbox releases. They can do it, but its taking more time and resources to make it functional even with reducing resolution. Microsoft has a bear minimum functionality requirement to release a game.

It does not matter, the performance was enough lower on the GPU side that it makes a big difference. Regardless of the plan from Microsoft, the console it weaker than even the One X in terms of GPU performance which means developers are working on a much lower system to make the game run.

I love my Series X, more than I like PS5. But Microsoft messed up with the Series S probably gambling that Sony's digital was going to be the same idea when it turned out they just took a hit and removed the disk drive. It really has hurt them on multi-platform games which is why games are being delayed on their platform which hurts sales. Its not going to surprise me if something for Xbox gets released to replace Series X/S in the next couple years.

No it's not. PS5 is more expensive everywhere. Here in the US we got off easy, we've only gotten a price increase on the digital model. Japan has gotten screwed the worse. It's nearly 50% more expensive now that it was at launch.

Is there any game that runs on the GTX 4080 but not on the GTX 4060 ?

I mean, I always aim at $300 GPUs (AMD's 7600 or NVidia 4060). Because I usually favor that argument. But many PC Builders want more than that.
I agree with you, but if you can run all your games on a PS5, or a 4060, then a PS5 Pro, or a 4090 is kind of a luxury, isn't it? Luxuries have always been expensive.

Well yes. But the "value" of a luxury is that you have something that others don't have. (Often delineated by money).

IE: "Too Expensive" is the point of luxuries. If everyone had it, it wouldn't be a luxury to begin with. It doesn't matter if we're talking about PS5 Pros, GTX 4090, the latest Nike shoes, Prada, Gucci, Rolex or Porsche. Too expensive and kind-of-a-bad-value is the point. It needs to be a bad price/performance ratio (but still slightly better than what everyone else has).

I think its what Dr Dro said, the software side has been likely disappointing for Sony, as the generation has had barely any games. So making up for it in hardware sales. I dont expect many PS owners are craving to spend record levels of money on a new console when the existing one will still be able to play all their games.

The Series S shouldnt prevent a game from being developed for it unless the VRAM isnt enough. Generally on a PC to play on something like a 4060 instead of 4090, you lower the resolution, turn of things that are hard on the GPU and then play the game still. It is different if the CPU is too weak but the CPU on the S is almost as fast as the X, so I do think devs struggling if they are to get a game on the S is just another indicator that devs have forgotten how to make games run without a ton of resources (new engines likely contribute some).

I think ultimately both consoles have struggled, it seems both Microsoft and Sony have published a lot less games this generation, Microsoft chose to use game pass as a way to lure people into the eco system and then started buying successful publishers to increase their IP ownership, which I would have preferred as a consumer that money went into making new games, and Sony seems to have done what Nintendo did with the Wii U, rested on their laurels from a previous successful platform. Sony also increased the cost of games, and both have continued the path of extracting subscription fees from their user base as well. A big difference between the two though is that Microsoft can easily afford to lose money on hardware sales and have a poor generation, Sony wont go bankrupt over it but I do think they feel it a lot more. I dont think we will ever see a console from Microsoft costing over 1000 USD.

I am not saying a game can't be developed on it, just that it makes it harder. When you have two consoles with very similar specs, making a game across them is not as hard except in differences between the development tools for them. However, when one is weaker by a decent margin, its harder to make it functional well enough/stable enough. Just dropping the resolution or graphics is not always enough for it being very stable. Generally developers try to make a game on consoles as stable as possible (At least where frame drops are not crazy). PC's you don't have that luxury because PC hardware is vast and different across all users. Series S does not stop games, it just slows them down from coming out as fast on Xbox.
