I have a question for anyone on the thread.

Is there anyone else using an Asus PB287Q 4K monitor on a 290/290X here?

I just got an email that my R9 290 Windforce is back from RMA and ready for pickup. I'm glad that they replaced it. I was worried that they wouldn't accept it due to the stains from CLU on the heatsink.

Runs well with the 290 but runs hot. Its the V2 card the same as my 290 but really I don't notice any issues with the 290 in the bottom slot and being the slower card. I have some Gelid extreme and a kit of articlean solution on the way so that should tame the temps pretty good.

Its probably either getting heat from the 290 which is causing the card to run hotter or just the usual factory paste job that is mediocre at times. Personally I never am a fan of how a GPU comes to me brand new, used, or whatever which is why I normally just immediately after a quick burn in to check for faults do it myself with my choice of paste and I also double check the VRM, RAM, etc to see if I need to make an improvement in some way somewhere.

I hear ya, I have a bit of MX-4 here but whats the sense in changing it when next monday I'll have the Gelid paste.

It should make a good test imo.

I really think with AMD doing the crossfire over the pci-e lanes is the big issue.. And the 290 isnt really putting much heat out but yes I agree it's sucking it off the lower card for sure.

Either way I'll figure it out ;)

Help me understand why CFx over the PCIe lanes would create more heat?
It's just a thought mkay,

If you have any info or want to chime in to help im all eyes!

Let me make a long story short. If I disable the bottom card why is the top running so much cooler?

I mean 20+ c lower in temps and it can be pushed to 1200/1550 with no heat issues thus far.

If I put a piece of cardboard on top of the bottom card as NOT to let the heat rise then what gives, the heat is back.

I also know the heat blowing off these coolers are thrown at about a 40 degree angle upwards and I account for that.

That's why I said I Believe that's the issue with AMD and how they run xfire on these cards...

It was a thought and not a fact, so what do you think besides heat coming off the lower card hmm?

Yea I still use my MX paste as I bought a huge tube of it because for me its been great in my LC loops in keeping temps down and even made my laptop run at lower temps.

Ohh I see, well when the second card is disabled it pretty much shuts it off completely because of the way 0 core works if I recall (Generally when 0 core is on with multiple cards the secondary cards shut off anyways). The CFX through PCIE I could not imagine being the cause of the heat mostly just because its not really that much different from having the cable like before except it just sends everything through the bus. Personally when I tested my PowerColor Reference models in up to 2 way CFX on the stock coolers the temps were like this:

Single Card: (60% fan speed after driver revision)
Average between the 3: 81c

Dual Cards: (60% fan speed after driver revision)
Average for top card: 85c (of the 3)
Average for bottom card: 83c (of the three)

All open air mind you with them in the nearest slots together running through heaven.

I tried every card on the top and bottom in stressing originally because I like to make sure my cards are fine before I put the blocks on them and start running them in a liquid loop. I did not really notice the temps jump because the second card was there but I normally did see the tops a bit higher mostly from the restricted airflow. This is just my experience and its also on an old driver revision (Like 14.1 maybe cannot remember) but I just remembered the temps because I was posting them on different forums for people to see originally when I was talking about them.

Not totally sure honestly as something could be causing that but I did not really notice much with my cards. I cannot test now because with my liquid loop letting the cards all run obviously raises the temps now :p

Crossfire is using some extra logic on the core but I doubt it would have much of an effect on the temp of each card. With my cards temps are also a problem and I run an open air test bench. The thing is that the PCB of an R9 290 gets hot enough to heat the air behind/above it to 10-20C° above ambient so the primary card will run that many C° hotter. I even tried setting up a "wind tunnel" behind my R9 290 to lower the air temps but it didn't help much the air being fed to the middle fan of the R9 290X is at around 33C° and the air going to the outer fans is in the high 20s. My room has an ambient between 20-24C°

Lol, Im sorry I didn't mean to come across rude or anything like that... That's a good one though " beaten dog syndrome" :toast:
But in all honesty what else could it be? That was about the only real change in how CFx works and I've been pulling my hair out on what it could be.

I keep all the variables the same, side pannel off the case. Fans on a custom curve, ambient temperature a must * the wife* hates a chilly room. So really what else could it be?

I know where your coming from and you have reference cards right? IMHO these TFIV coolers are ok by them selves but unless you have at least 3 inches of space or more between them they just cavitate the air.

I ended up pulling the card appart to add some MX-4 to it while I wait on the other paste this coming week.

I'll post the pictures shortly on what I found under the hood ;)

MSI 290X gaming 4G TVIV card pulled apart to check TIM :twitch:

I couldn't wait and I still had a tad of MX-4 paste to try while waiting on other paste to arrive.

This is going to be a great test bed tonight ;)

Well this is what I was sent from MSI Canada RMA after 2 previous RMA's on a 290... they hooked me up with an X card so yeah I'll be happy this go around.

Well new TIM job and 12c cooler in the same Valley run.. This afternoon it was hitting 94c and throttling down.

And @eidairaman1 how long we need to wait? That poor rig is going to turn to dust if you dont hurry the F up

Same ambients ff? Nice results!
Yes it is EarthDog, same everything. Your a reviewer, do you use that ArctiClean #1 and 2 solution?

Believe me when I say I used the emulsifier 3 times and it wasn't untill the 4th time I let it sit for 30min before it broke up the TIM they used.

And thank you.
