I never understood why booting from the main partition wasn't good enough
It's fine if you don't mind booting from a FAT16/32 partition, since that is all UEFI can understand in boot terms.

i use ADK, ISO from MS site, tpm and secure boot are disabled...
... it does something to BIOS when it boots since clearcmos made PC work again !!
//
I can :
1 - save my settings to text
2 - boot win 11, wait BSOD
3 - save settings to text
4 - compare BIOS settings
//
Yes... no setting changed, but no BSOD under Win10 anymore after clearcmos.. and BSOD again since Win11 launched !!
I have Memory Power Down disabled, and High Memory Voltage (aka) too, only settings i touched about RAM... or is it secure boot and tpm thingies that mess the two O/S !?
Since default settings from BIOS Win 11 doesnt' BSOD:p ...

It's an AMD setting, RAM Power Down in my case breaks all, i set AUTO.

FYI if memory power down is disabled you WILL get instability unless memory context restore is also disabled. Known AGESA bug.

Interesting tidbit from bz about VST test in ycruncher being good for Fabric testing. It's towards the bottom of the list and relatively uncore-heavy, but I didn't notice anything in particular about it. I've not heard of any specifically excellent Fabric testing tools so ycruncher looks to be a good place to start.

Though, that begs the question as to why UMC-heavy RAM testing like TM5 shouldn't at least be *reasonably* good and come close to VST, since properly testing memory (HCI/TM5) on 7950X basically exhausts IFOP's bandwidth capabilities.

In any case, some impressive ECC capabilities on Ryzen's part. Take "stable Fabric speed" claims with a grain of salt, people  maybe they changed Bus/Interconnect reporting for Raphael, because anything that unstable would be spitting WHEAs like a machine gun on Vermeer

tbf I don't think many 7xxx users are OCing infinity fabric, most are just sticking with the stock 2000 setting, but yeah, that is certainly a behavior change.

If you're booting on the same PC, windows 11 over-writes windows 10 bootloaders and updates them to 11 specific ones

CMOS clear is going to reset your TPM key, enable secureboot, and enable fTPM
Those are changes that absolutely can and will stop an OS working if they're swapped around

I've been using the 5800x3d for a few weeks now with all cores set to -30. It has proven stable in stress testing and daily use. It seems I won the lottery a bit in that regard. Short of BCLK overclocking, I cannot for the life of me get the CPU to run faster than 4450mhz. At least it is a rock solid stable 4450mhz. It boosts to 4450mhz and stays there. Temps don't seem to go higher than 65c on air cooling right now, so maybe I could eek out a little more with a bit better cooling.

-30 5800X3Ds are a lot more common than other CPUs. I guess you could look at it both ways, either AMD played it safe Intel-style, or lazy AMD left way too much on the table.

It is literally not possible to push Precision Boost to exceed the 44.5x multiplier in all-core, or anything loading more than about 3 cores. Like I've said a million times, it's not a normal Vermeer CPU.

I've just updated my BIOS from 1.82 beta (which contained the SoC voltage limiter first) to 1.85 beta with AGESA 1.0.0.7a.

I'm happy to report that my idle temps are back to normal. :) (they were a tad higher than usual with 1.82)

I've also noticed that unlike on Intel, background programs affect your "idle" power consumption a lot! If I close Steam, GOG Galaxy and the Wargaming.net launcher (which eats the most power out of the three), CPU package power goes down from 25 W to 18 W. That's 7 W difference! On an Intel system, this would be about 1-2 W at most. Strange.

7800X3D with CPU Core Boost on Auto (i mean, not set to OFF), played Ys that's a heavy CPU game (last patch was about that).

Just setting -30 all core PBO, along with 120 PPT, 75 TDC and 110 EDC (all in PBO tuner), got my 5800X3D's temps down by 15°C in CB20. From 80 to 65. I think this is (just) a beginning of a beautiful friendship. :D

That is weird. Sleep mode should be where the CPU is... asleep.

Today, my computer got stuck before POST with the CPU and RAM debug LEDs on, kind of the same way it did with the factory BIOS... except that it took me about 5 attempts to make it boot at all.

I've disabled Memory Context Restore for now, we'll see if it helps. Or maybe 1.2 VSOC with 6000 MHz RAM is a little bit low after all? I didn't have this problem on the last BIOS, so I don't know.

Why does MSi fix one problem in one BIOS version, but then introduce another problem just to be fixed later? It's getting annoying. :(

Another hangup during cold boot this morning. :( Luckily, I was able to start the PC after one restart this time. It looks like MCR wasn't the culprit, although oddly enough, the PC boots just as quickly with MCR disabled as when it is enabled.

The things I'm thinking about doing next:
  • Raise SoC voltage slightly, in case 1.2 V is too low with 6000 MHz RAM. Although, my CPU already runs at 92 °C in Cinebench, and with increased VSOC, it would definitely reach 95 and dial back on its turbo, which I'm not very happy to do on a 280 mm AIO.
  • The other option is disabling EXPO, which also isn't ideal for obvious reasons.
I'm also thinking about going full retard mode, and buying a 7800X3D in hopes of better thermals coupled with the phenomenal gaming performance. :D It's only that I'm a bit reluctant to spend all that money right before vacation time.

It's fine if you don't mind booting from a FAT16/32 partition, since that is all UEFI can understand in boot terms.
This is the reason I never IF I can help it use bios flashback as a rule specially with Asus mobo's as it's a crapshoot as to whether it'll work or not

And... another hangup during boot. This is it! I'm pulling the plug on EXPO for now. :( I'll do some testing, see how it works (I'm mostly interested in temperatures and stability), and report back. I'm pretty sure I won't notice much difference in performance with my 1080p60 requirements, but it's quite disappointing still.

Summer has come to rainy England, so my 7700X reaches its max 95 °C even with my AIO. What time is better than this to test what happens when I disable turbo?

Here's the result:
turbo_on_vs_off.png

  • 2,000 points lost in Cinebench, which is not even 10%.
  • Power consumption essentially halved, maxing out at 70 W instead of reaching PPT at 142 W.
  • CPU core temperature stops rising before it reaches 60 °C.
  • Bonus point: I also don't feel any negative effects of turning off EXPO and running my RAM at 4800 MHz, but the boot hangup is gone.
Why have I not done all of these before? Why doesn't everybody do this? Honestly, I'm just starting to realize how amazing Zen 4 is! :D

It just is the case that the V-F characteristics of the process they choose is always lagging behind the stats that AMD marketing wants, so Fmax is always set way beyond the efficiency sweet spot. Every generation is amazing when you run it at the last gen's spec. Ever since they moved to chiplets Ryzen clockspeed makes minimal difference to gaming performance.

High TDP Zen 4 has really high base clock at 4.5GHz+, a great demonstration of N5 in its efficiency band. Though honestly, if you are limited to 60Hz, you'd have to do way more before you start feeling any real difference.
