I'm contemplating swapping my 5800X to 5800X3D to get the endgame for AM4. What do you guys think? How are the temps at stock? Can you still fiddle with PBO and CO? I imagine that if my Dark Rock 4 managed 5800X with CO and PBO at 120/75/110 it should handle 5800X3D. Or does 3D stack on top of the CCD make it worse? How's the memory support, will it handle running 3800 MT/s like my 5800X?

Before anyone asks, no I don't see myself swapping to AM5.

You should have already done it. :D
Jokes aside....yes. Just yes.
5800X3D is a gen ahead in gaming from the rest of the 5000 series cpus.
It's either this or a 7000X3D (any of them). There's nothing else.
So, go for it.

Hi,
Wondering if I need both amd vga drivers uma and phoneix
Reason I ask I clean installed "unbloating time !

I did use the drive export and import I mentioned earlier
Before I had a lot of amd graphic pointers but not no more so I figured I need the amd vga but it shows two of them :/
Also before I could switch from default resolution 2560-1440 "it's frozen now" to 1920-1080 because one saves a little battery life plus makes everything larger and more dpi friendly.

I did reinstall nitro sense it's needed to switch to different mode profiles like eco/ balanced/ performance/ turbo.

Don't let those pastes fool you the screen is much smaller this is to a bad thing about the larger resolution !

Well I only installed phoneix and it alone unlocked the resolution so I'll make my system image now and install the other after see if it screws anything up
Need to install office/... still.

UMA vga attempt resulted in error unsupported so got it right with phoneix first :rockout:

After a brief consideration and looking at various reviews I can't justify the cost vs performance benefit for my use case. I'm still mostly GPU bound at 3440x1440@144 and throwing money on 5800X3D won't solve that.
Sure, numbers look good if you're on a 1080p display but once you increase resolution you start to enter the area of diminishing returns.

You should enjoy it if you're playing the right games. You can enable PBO, but you can't tweak its settings. By that I mean, if you tweak PBO it will cause a drop in performance. Also you can set negative cpu voltage offset to boost performance. I'm able to run -30 on all 8 cores.

Did your board get a BIOS update for that or are you using PBO2 Tuner? Just curious.
Running -30 CO all-core here too, but would need to use software for anything w PBO.

I was using PBO2 Tuner for the -30 CO originally but, there was a BIOS update for my board that enabled all the adjustments in BIOS. I think most X570 & B550 boards have the BIOS options now.

Will have to check if there's another, MSI (annoyingly) gave full options on CO with the WiFi version of my board (B550 Tomahawk).
The non-WiFi version that I have just got "Kombo Strike 1-3", which translate to -10, -20, -30 CO.

On those 8000G series slides I think I seen a 5700x3d?

Edit - I'd like to know what people put their general settings at in their bios?? I leave mine at default, but I have seen for and against for HPET on/off, tpm on/off, resizable bar, etc, etc.

I think so too. If it's a thing, and if it's cheap enough, it might be a good last upgrade for my brother's AM4 system after the R5 5500.

My routine is EXPO enabled, ReBar enabled, PBO on auto, set my custom fan curves, everything else on auto or default. No hassle. :)

Ok, had to update bios to enable PBO and CO adjustments (they just weren't there on 37d from July 2022). So far I'm running the same memory profile as on my 5800X:
1703349850692.png

PBO set to PPT/TDC/EDT set to 100/70/100. All core to -30.

Anyone cares to share their PBO settings running with air cooler similar to DR4?

You should leave that at stock..
That's a difference of 73C vs 80C in CPU-Z stress test with defaults having lower multicore.

Wow that is crazy man. I just ran it and my CPU did not pass 53c.. -28 for me because -30 fails certain things..

I actually haven't had to, because the board doesn't really allow the 5800X3D to draw past about 105W anyway, even with no power limits set.

But the last time I used power limits, it was something like 110/65/100 at -28. It's hard to recommend anything concrete though, there's a massive gulf on some CPUs between 1206 and post-1206 BIOSes that completely upends the V-F curve, CO settings and optimal power limits.

That is an AIO, air is maybe 2-3c difference, it isnt a heavy load at all, and the CPU does not put out enough heat really :(

A lot of people get miffed with me when I say that old school air coolers do not mix well with modern CPUs, both from Intel and AMD.

Does it actually draw more power with any other board ever? My 7800X3D tops out at 80 W, or at 85-87 W with EXPO enabled (6000 MHz RAM, 1.3 VSoC) even at max boost.

I dont think it does. Biggest contributing factor to SOC wattage is based on two things. 1. FCLK/MCLK speed, the faster you go, the more wattage. 2. SOC voltage, that is the quickest way to pump up SOC wattage. What does this have to do with anything? Depending on what you run, it will contribute to what your PPT will be, since SOC is part of CPU Package Power.

In this photo you can see how close I am to the 143w wall for this CPU, and SOC voltage is only at .925v because I am experimenting. I normally run it at 1.1v for this speed, since at 1600/3200 it autos to 1v.

In this photo you can see how close I am to the 143w wall for this CPU, and SOC voltage is only at .925v because I am experimenting. I normally run it at 1.1v for this speed, since at 1600/3200 it autos to 1v.
Did AMD shave so much power off within a single generation? The 7800 comes with a 162 W wall, but even with 1.3 VSoC, it only needs 85 W at full load. I love its ability to maintain max boost basically forever.

It would appear they have, if you are looking at 5Ghz all of the time. They do make a good CPU. I gotta slide into AM5 to see for myself lol

5 GHz single-core, 4.8 GHz all-core. Come on, join the dark side! :pimp:

Does it actually draw more power with any other board ever? My 7800X3D tops out at 80 W, or at 85-87 W with EXPO enabled (6000 MHz RAM, 1.3 VSoC) even at max boost.

7800X3D should be around 100-110W in Linpack. Make comparisons that are apples to apples.

It's not like 7800X3D is a monumental leap forward in either actual (not gaming perf propped up by Vcache) octa core performance or clocks. Except for AVX512 maybe. Clock envelope is conservative for the V-F curve for Zen 4 on N5. So for N7 to N5, new arch, it is pretty much expected.

SOC not comparable either, new IO on N6. Much higher scaling VSOC yet IO power ends up being about the same.
