Ryzen Owners Zen Garden

But.. but.. what about that layer of cache everyone goes on about :D
That's why it has lower clocks and voltage. With the same clocks and voltage as the non-3D version, it would cook itself in 2 milliseconds. :D

I am trying to push as much clock speed through my 7800x3d and it hits 80c quite easily despite custom water cooling and premium TIM. I have considered delidding but I would rather just buy a 9800x3d next year when it is available.

I got one question: why? Is there a game where 7800X3D is not enough but at the same time, RX 6700 XT is?

I second this question. Even with a 7800 XT, I'm nowhere near a CPU limit in any game that I play.

I've just tested that even enabling or disabling EXPO (basically switching between 6000 and 4800 MHz RAM) has absolutely no effect on my gaming experience.

What mobo would you recommend for a 5800X btw?

CPU intensive tasks: gaming and... more gaming.
RAM is just a couple 8 GB Patriot Viper 3200 MHz sticks, nothing spectacular. I know it'll handicap this CPU performance but my client doesn't have any budget to fix that.
Size, RGB, layout, WiFi, Thunderbolt etc don't matter, I just wanna buy the cheapest motherboard capable of not being a nuisance.

The cooler is AMD Wraith Prism so I don't think any motherboard will conflict with that. Nobody will perform any OC there. Everything will run at stock wattage, possibly with a little bit of undervolting.

Why yes there are and they are all extremely poorly optimized games. For example, I have been playing Start Citizen alpha the last 3 years which will get poor FPS almost regardless of what CPU you use. Upgrading from a 5800x3d to a 7800x3d gave me a 15-50% performance increase depending on in-game location which now means I never drop below 30 minimum FPS. The 6750xt is just enough for 1080p gameplay but not enough for 1440p.

I rarely play AAA games. The last 10 years of gaming for me has been chasing maximum single threaded performance for one game or another without needing a beefy GPU. In 2018 I was struggling to get enough CPU performance for Natural Selection 2. Stellaris is more cpu heavy than gpu heavy as well but I don't think I have ever been too worried about its performance. Victoria 3 is shockingly demanding on the cpu when playing at high speed.

I could afford a 4090 if I wanted to. When I bought the 6750xt last year I thought GPU prices were ridiculous so I bought the GPU with the best performance per dollar at that time to upgrade from my 1060 3gb. I almost bought a 3070 before the pandemic when prices were sane but I took too long and prices skyrocketed. I plan to upgrade to a new GPU next generation. The rumors of a 7900xtx level card for $400 sounds fantastic. I would rather not pay the nvidia tax for feature.

I have spent some time this week overclocking my 6750xt for fun. Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition genuinely pushes my little 6750xt but with the FSR 2.0 mod I get plenty of FPS without overclocking.

Memory speeds matter not for most games. I have also been overclocking my memory recently. Star Citizen can gain as much as 20% average FPS between expo 6000mhz and tuned sub-timings on 6000mhz.

I own a 6700 XT and a 4K display. I know how easy it is to destroy it with AAA. You don't even need to try, just download any semi-recent title, go Ultra settings without FSR and it's unplayable.

Makes sense then. Since these games are so horribly optimised, do they run better on non-X3D CPUs of higher clocks? Do they run better on Raptor Lake CPUs?

They almost universally run better on x3d cpu's with more cache. At least for minimum FPS. Star Citizen is rather sensitive to memory bandwidth. I have heard that for best average FPS you want a 14900k with maximum overclocked memory, but that has more to do with memory speed than Cpu. Memory overclocking on ryzen does not work as well.

My average FPS is ~80 at 1080p. I can't stand the minimum FPS in certain scenarios when there are lots of objects floating around, lots of players in the area, or cities. The 7800x3d is the undisputed king for maximizing minimum fps in star citizen.

I mean that tracks, it is the X3D's claim to fame.

The official theme song should be Friends in Low Places.
That or C.R.E.A.M. (cache rules everything around me).

Budget?

I would go B550 PG4 if you are budget limited, TUF if less limited. But those are just boards I have experience with, others may be better.

If I remember correctly MSI B550-A Pro was one of the best low budget boards, that could easily handle even 5950X, VRM wise.

Let's say it doesn't exist. About 100 dollars give or take.

Seems great. Is there anything cheaper but still decent?

Please do not buy the dumpster fire that is AM4 Phantom Gaming 4 boards lol

Pro4 at the very very minimum for asrock, at least there is an acceptable heatsink on the same shitty parts

Dunno what prices are like around you.
$120 BNIB.
$80 used.

I think 5800X isn't that much of a big deal and I got scrap metal laying around, can craft makeshift heatsinks. My main concern is firmware. I don't have AM4 experience other than placing a Ryzen 5500 on some cheapo AsRock B450 board which ended up just working fine. Now I want to buy something better than that board because 5800X is a bit more power hungry and unlike that Ryzen 5500 user, this client cares about gaming performance so I want the most snappy firmware if that's a thing. No idea honestly. I'm a dumb Intel boy.

Hi, Could you guys recommend a 64gb ddr4 ram kit for a 58003dx, my motherboard is a msi b450 tomahawk max. thank you.

The Asrock Am4 Pro4 I had was terrible. The VRM's were a problem and it couldn't do my memory at XMP speeds.

If you are looking at cost. There is a refresh on the MSI B550 Pro MA. It comes with WIFI 6E. Has more than one M2 slot and is like $129 Canadian. The other board that was cheap that I liked is the As Rock Riptide B550. If you want X570 the budget lineup from MSI is fine. Even Gigabyte is fine at lower price points. The Aorus Master I think is a well equipped board.

X570 won't make any sense whatsoever. I'd even consider a B350 board if I was guaranteed to have no firmware related troubles with 5800X in mind.

Do not buy the AS Rock Pro. There is a reason the Riptide exists. I bought the Pro on a $40 rebate. Had it sit around for a while. Installed working components on to it and no post. Too bad it was past the return Window. Go on Newegg, order the MSI B550 Pro MA Wifi for $129. It arrives the next day. I install the exact same components and Windows had to be reset but it posted no problem.

X570 makes sense if you want more than 1 4.0 M2 drive. It is also good if you want to add an expansion card at the same time.

The PG4 was fine for stock 5600x + XMP 3200, but ymmv. I wouldn't pay over $80 for it.

Maybe a B450 or A520 lower-end Aorus would be better for you. I seem to see those cheap-ish around here.

For me after X470. As Rock boards just got expensive. The X470 SLI/Master was like $149. Then X570 comes for $300. I agree on the Aorus but B550 boards are better priced than before and B450 are not as easy to find anymore.

None of that is remotely gonna happen. This is a purely gaming PC with two SATA SSDs (no m.2 hardware whatsoever) and no plans on additional hardware. The current motherboard has died so the client is seeking for a replacement. I just wanna make sure it won't blow up, that's all I am asked to care for. It has to fit: a CPU (5800X), RAM (2 one-rank sticks of 3200 MHz), a GPU (RTX 2060 Super), two SATA drives, a keyboard, a mouse, and a USB headset. The owner is only planning on GPU upgrades but doesn't have money for now.

What about MSI B450M PRO-VDH MAX? I more than dig its price and it looks overqualified.
