There is a serious supply problem. Apple is OK with their stock levels, but everyone else is extremely behind the curve. Looking at the bits of information that is coming in from retail, neither Nvidia or AMD shipped anywhere near enough units to equal demand. How many 6800?? cards could Amazon have sold today with unlimited supply.... 10,000 in the USA maybe. How many did they have, we will never know, but I wouldn't bet over a 100.

There is only one way to stop scalping and that is having a full inventory to sell at launch. Sneaker scalpers spend over $10k USD on bots plus maintenance fee's. You think captcha's will stop them. These folks have some advanced tech. Even if you or I or Average Joe buys one intent on using it, the lure of double or tripling the price on e-Bay get's in your head.

So why is all this happening. I have a feeling AMD and Intel feel pressure to keep their stock prices up and Wall Street loves these launches. So they paper launch in the Fall knowing they won't ship until Winter/Spring. It creates a buzz and their valuation remains high.

I woud'nt worry about it too much, you can also wait for 1 to 2 months, or even better after the hollidays, chances are big you can get a card.

Just wanted to add that the fact a few users here were able to pick up a card make this NOT a paper launch.

Neither was the Nvidia launches, just super high demand and lack of supply because of COVID-19. Also the gaming population has grown since the last console launches (2013).

20 years ago the only way I could own a PC was to build it myself. I could buy parts at a local store or when a computer show would come into town from time to time. Now it looks like you can't even get the parts online without getting scalped. Man, have times changed. To think that ALL that was said about how online shopping was the way to go. Now we have major supply issues that is unfolded right before everyone's eyes and nobody can do a damn think about it.

I dont recall many launch that all products were sold out on day 1 (if they were available at all lol) in the 20+ years i was following IT.

Sold out on day 1 is one thing, not available 3 month after launch is another one. We still have to wait to see if both Ryzen 5000 cpu and 6000 gpu release are paperlaunch or not.

i hope i could get a 6800 in december, but we will see.

scalping is human nature caused by greed, and the desperate need of enthusiasts to have to latest crap. If there was not such desperate need then scalping would be pointless so not happen. scalpers are hated but just playing to exactly that need.

unfortunately this isn't true at all, the real truth is that we just live in a two class society, there are a LOT of rich semi-rich people in this world, and there are also a LOT of us who just get by. both groups are surprisingly big if you don't count the 1% top.

Imagine actually buying a hot new item from a scalper. Time and time again we've seen issues with launch day products. It's almost a fact of life in the PC industry. So you're buying probably a shitty product compared to what would be available later when the kinks get worked out, and your warranty is probably going to be complicated too because you technically bought it second hand, for an inflated price.

With all the downsides of buying scalped products, especially in the PC industry, I'm surprised they're even in "business". My 2600k system still has nothing to fear...
