OMG PCIe 5.0 SSDs are almost unusable without coolers ...

Future of PC is .... Cooler for each component :D
As far as I know, currently there is no PCIe gen5 m.2 SSD which can work without some cooling.
The ones sold bare, are all have signs that you need some appliance before you can use.
But it is also very rare that something not having some passive or active cooling.
maybe the future/newer generations of gen5 SSD-s will get lower consumption.

All of my Gen4s run cool, but I wouldn't mind some overkill heatsink to run passively. I fancy adding more crap to my build to fill in the gaps lol I guess at $25, nah or maybe!

M.2 drives are getting absurd, super hot for just short bursts for performance.
At this point I would rather go with a U.2 drive with an adapter cable, which could be easily cooled by case fans, not to mention being able to have decent sustained performance.

Ive been running a tall passive heatsink for years in conjuction with an aerocool spot fan that blows are on the ram and SSD (see attached)

@W1zzard Im guessing the additional cooling had no effect on the 4kQD1 r/w's..?

Performance won't change unless the drive with weaker cooler throttles. 4K QD1 won't move enough data to throttle, should be fine with uncooled drive, too

This is a weakness of my thermal testing, which is a stress test. I'm thinking about ways how to test lighter loads, but not sure yet

That's the graph with the bare SSD (no cooler attached). It somehow figures. Assuming it takes 20 seconds (hard to read from the graph) to get the SSD from 40°C to 80°C, with a guesstimated specific thermal capacity of 1000 J/(kgK) that would give you 20W. So ~ right. Assuming the specific thermal capacity is not completely off, also assuming that the SSD distributes heat evenly (certainly not lol).

When looking at such devices, one should also note that 20s @ 12GB/s is 240 GB. Practical _consumer_ use case? Such devices surely need a small passive heatsink, basically to get the heat capacity up, but that's about it.

I'm well aware of that. The criticism is about Corsair and the lack of specifications.

Is the cooler really only necessary because of the small silicon technology?
I think 386 Intel processors had similar watts and were fully passive cooled. these coolers were not really advanced coolers.

I think there is another issue hidden behind that. Just physics.

I gave up. I wanted to find the connector specs for the M2 slot on mainboards. How much power draw is possible

something amusing i found (to explain - less heat than a hdd ...): https://www.crucial.com/articles/about-ssd/what-is-an-nvme-ssd
  • Energy efficiency: NVMe SSDs are energy-efficient, which means they consume less power and generate less heat than HDDs. This can extend the battery life of laptops and improve the overall thermal performance of your computer.

Pretty sure those 386 without any heatsink had significantly less power draw. I'd say <5W. And yes, the small SSD controller means high thermal density, therefore harder to cool. Also I believe the Physon PCIe5 controller is not particularly efficient.

In terms of energy for transferred data that will surely be the case.

The "bare drive with fan" graph doesn't seem to make sense. Temps still go up to 80C, yet the transfer rates are very different from "bare drive no fan"?

The drive will throttle the bandwidth to stay below this temperature, so the more cooling, the more it can push through before it hits 80°C

something amusing
A HDD is like 150 MB/s, this is almost 15,000 MB/s, so 100x (!) more. Image a stack of 100 HDDs running

I dont need to :c it was loud hot and required oodles of power even with staggered spinup (which was needed by default).

I think back to that time I tried running 4x Raptor ADFD 150s in Matrix Raid 0 lol.. they were insanely loud when working in unison, like a supercharged industrial coffee maker..

If it works it works.. but try fitting one of those between gpu and a cpu aircooler, say NH-D15 for example, lol

Reminds the old times when I bought zalman/thermalright heatsinks for A8NE / P5Q, and adapted a small fan on them hahah

Page 4 - "Even the big Thermalright HR-08 cannot cool the drive completely passively."

Change to HR-09.
