But.....waiting around for 10-30 minutes for the shaders to compile? That's just f'ing crazy, if you ask me. Nothing more fun than loading up a game and then sitting there watching the shader's compiling slowly tick up to 100%.

While the person that made the video may be at fault for not waiting for the shaders to compile, I think the port sounds like a POS if it requires you to wait a long time just so you can go in and play it. But maybe that's just me.

I tend to agree on this. We buy games to play them, not sit around and wait for them to compile, as if we're OK with watching paint dry. And imagine how long that would take on min spec with a mere 4770. It honestly is one of the main reasons I'm reluctant to try the game, because I know I'd be left with at best 1.5 hrs to decide because of that damn compiling. And I have to say, that Sony would use a team like Iron Galaxy to do the port tells me they don't give a damn about PC customers.

CoD has been doing this for ages.

While it would ofc be ideal for a game to be able to compile shaders on the fly, it doesn't exactly strike me as intelligent to skip a necessary shader compilation. But i think the issue is that they even give the option to skip it - let the shader compiling be a part of the installation process instead, and unskippable. Would have taken care of the vast majority of performance complaints. The rest could likely be solved by forcing the game to go with settings that use less than your available vram, and then having a toggle that lets you choose settings that goes beyond your vram limit, where you would have to actively choose to use more vram than your gpu has, and give a big warning pop up message saying that choosing to do this will lead to stuttering - much like gta5 did it.

Personally i just sat and watched a couple of vids while it did the shader compiling - no biggie.

yeah imo shader compilation isn't a big deal. Uncharted has a long shader compilation too, I just watched youtube videos while it did its thing. I see no big deal from it

You can choose to enter the game before it has finished compiling the shaders, but as the shader compiling is extremely cpu intensive, you will not have a great experience if you choose to do that. In my opinion the shader compilation should be unskipable exactly because of this, as alot of people evidently dont have the patience to wait for it to finish, and then go on to complain about performance.

Sorry, I was asking if the compilation process stalled if the focused window changed.

Do you mean if you tab out of the game, or choose to do something in the game ?

In any case, the shader compilation continues regardless.

Either :)

Some games freeze (at least when fullscreen, how I play) if you go to a different app.

I've noticed that some scenes involving water are VERY demanding, while others aren't as demanding.

Like this isn't crazy demanding

But this is

Particle heavy scenes seem to be very demanding aswell.

And a couple of screens, just cause i liked them :D

Gotta say, i love the look and feel of this game - considering that this was originally a not very impressive looking ps3 only game, this remaster is exceptionally impressive.

I remember playing the demo on the PS3, I thought it was okay. I didn't really think it was anything special enough to capture my need to buy a copy.

I watched the series on HBO and it was decent, but felt like the story had gaps and it kind of repeated the same thing over and over again. Something bad, press on. Something bad happens, press on. Something bad happens, press on. Maybe I was expecting something more? If the series followed the game then I don't think I'd need any reason to buy a remastered PC version of the game because I've already seen how it plays out.
This is actually the first time I come across an online comment about HBO's TLoU show from someone that hasn't played the games multiple times. Thanks for being honest - I presumed that that's how new viewers must feel after the unbalanced pacing of the show. For the record, the first game does a much, much better job of depicting how close Joel and Elly got during that adventure and also, how menacing the infected hordes are (on that note, the show had only one hard-hitting scene, which is really not in tune with how playing the game felt).

As for the upcoming second season, I have very low expectations since that source material is severely lacking in all respects...

Works decent with DLSS HIGH with some ULTRA settings , tweaked with DLSSTweaks for a higher rendering resolution so you can keep VRAM usage down, i dont see big graphic difference from native but it has some glitches with some objects / reflections blinking sometimes.
Edit: It feels sometimes when i turn the camera fast that the image is at a lower resolution for just a sec even i have motion blur off , not sure if its because of DLSS or not but i think it does that native too for some reason, i can see lighting effects/shadows rendering after a moment and not instant.

Talk about fake news. If you listen to what steve actually says, he says it runs fine on 8gb vram cards with 1080p render res (aka 1440p dlssq aswell) with high settings.

People just shouldn't expect to use ultra textures on gpu's with less than 12gb vram...

I agree, ultra is usually a high price with little to no real graphic changes.

But to rely on DLSS or any ai upscaling isn't good. Especially since this game really isn't that pretty.

Actually, it's pathetic when you can look at something like Cyberpunk being better optimized than this.

Well its a port and not a new game but i agree with you that the graphics are not 2023 but they arent bad either, i dont see big differences when using DLSS 85% rendering tweak vs native (i think its 72% standard DLSS HIGH) .

It isn't real open world as it's very linear. The textures are OK to a degree, on low it's pathetic.

Game developers should be optimizing their games. As much as I'm not a fan of AI overall taking jobs, this is a field where I think a AI could benefit.

You have to keep in mind that this is a remaster where they try to make a very old game look as good as possible - that will never be super efficient, unlike when you build a new game from the ground up, like with cyberpunk, where the engine is specifically developped for that game, and to handle all those advanced graphics

As a comparison, think of how demanding skyrim becomes when you try to make that as good looking as possible - it can become demanding to the point where no machine can run it.

That said, i disagree with you that this game isn't good looking - i think it looks really good most of time. Posted a bunch of screenshots further up.

The original The last of Us is on my top 5 favorite games of all time. I bought it on PS3, and PS4. Beat it multiple times. The last of Us part II was a big let down but still beat that too. The Last of Us on HBO, I refuse to watch because I do not like the girl actor they chose.

All that said, I refuse to buy this game again just to play it on PC. How many times must the same game keep releasing? I mean give us something new for crying out loud.

To those playing it, enjoy. Especially if it is your first play through.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. It is as subjective as can be, and thus you are entitled to your opinion, as i am to mine. So we shall just have to disagree.

Not really true, I just bought it last night and put in a pretty long session on my 8700K, GTX 1080, 16 GB 3200 RAM rig. The auto detect settings were all High except for Med on all Textures. I actually made slight bumps up on the auto detect using 16x AF, vs the 4x it selected, and up 5% on one of the reflection quality settings.

Now I will tell you I am not averaging 60 FPS, more like 50 I would say, with dips as low as 40, but it plays smoothly. I've really only had a few very slight hitches, and they are generally when big action scenes come, like when the car you're in gets hit in the intro, and a transition area here and there.

The thing is though, I am not even using FSR 2, because for the life of me, I cannot find it in the graphics settings, and that is my ONLY nit pick so far. It's a very good game though and seems to be well ported, FAR better than Arkham Knight or Uncharted LoTC were.

The game actually looks amazing even at these settings on my 32" Panasonic Alpha IPS TV at 1080p. I was blown away immediately by the realistic looking fire effects in the intro, and even when those effects cover most of the screen, I'm at about 55 FPS.

Gameplay is pretty decent too, and I like that they don't hold your hand too much on where to go next. The shooting is FAR easier for me with mouse than it was when I tried the original years ago on my friend's PS4, but they DO keep you honest with weapon sway. I now have it upgraded to the least amount though. I haven't used the bow much because at the default level it's range is very short, and takes a good while to draw.

The one thing that kind of surprised me is Clickers seem WAY easier to kill than they were on my friend's PS4 with the dualshock 4 pad, but I DO suck with gamepads. I've been either stealth killing them with shivs, or one revolver headshot plus one club swing when there's no others nearby. Sometimes I even get one right after the other with shivs after I lure them with a bottle. The Bloater was kind of a surprise too, as at first I wasted lots of Hunting Rifle and Shotgun rounds, but then after getting caught and killed by him when I miscalcutaed reload time, I found the Revolver takes him out pretty fast.

BTW, I DID of course wait until the shader compiling was finished, which took around 25 min, same as Uncharted. I just hope it will not out of the blue require they be compiled again like Uncharted did. I got ONE crash over a session that was several hours long, but I had the game minimized for some time while I was doing something else, which may have contributed to it.

Glad you had a good experience with it - knew you would :)

As for fsr2 - it's in the display settings under resolution scaling, rather than the graphics settings. Attached a friends settings pic - you just need to choose fsr2 instead of dlss. With fsr2 you could bump textures to high i reckon.

I had no issues running it once I lowered my mouse speed. But for me, the game is too linear and predictable that after an hour, I unstilled it.

IIRC, shader recompilation may be required if changing hardware, OS, or drivers. Not always though.
