The TPU UK Clubhouse

There is a very good reason why sinks have plug holes and plugs :p
Are you trying to tell me that you plug your sink in and let it fill up just to wash your hands? :wtf:

I don't but I am willing to bet some do and some more would fill the sink to shave as well. I have 4 sinks in the house, 3 are one tappers and 1 is that damn 2 tapper.

A bit of sad news.

BREAKING: British Steel announces it will close its two blast furnaces in Scunthorpe, ending all steel production in the UK after more than 150 years.

What the hell? Why?
If I had to guess, I'd say why every company is downsizing these days.
1. Rising costs,
2. Rising minimum wage,
3. Too much competition from abroad,
4. Not enough buying power,
5. Brexit = more costly and difficult export + no influx of cheap but capable workforce,
6. Everybody living on benefits instead of working,
and so on.

It's no joke that the UK is a shadow of itself these days.

So they need to adapt not shut down. This was a moron move. Seems to be a trend as of late.

Even Royal Mail, the oldest British company got sold to a foreign millionaire recently. It's the new zeitgeist.

For what I saw, they're saying that : it's a difficult market, new customs taxes, environmental costs, we're loosing 700 000 £ a day.

It's decarbinisation and cheap steel from China in the main, the process leading to this closure was started well before last Octobers government budget announcements, we will still be producing steel in the UK in the future but using Electric Arc furnices instead of Coal fired.

This is capitalism. Companies, once privatised, can be sold. It's that simple.

Same as British Steel, which by the way, is owned by a Chinese firm. It's not been British for a while. Just like Indian owned Tata steel was having issues. Fact is British companies sold off in the eighties lost their protection.

I'd appreciate it if people got their facts right before posting pseudo political BS in the UK clubhouse. You can't have national powerhouses when they're not national entities.

I quoted Auswolf, but it's a general kickback against agendised posts.

Edit: if that's not clear, what I'm saying is, please don't contaminate the clubhouse with politics.

That's a bummer, but same thing is happening in all 1st world nations and has been since the end of the cold war. That said it would be nice if the local governments could pass law to keep these industrial facilities in care and maintenance or something, maybe make a museum or tourist thing out of it. Once it's bulldozed good luck ever building a new one again. The metallurgical site here got bulldozed back in 2008, well the mill is still there to process mine ore, then sent to Quebec for processing and refining.

Since of most of my life has been in mining/metallurgy (not iron/steel specifically) some thoughts on this.

Iron/steel being base metal isn't worth much and it is market price, right now about $1cad/lb and higher grades of steel maybe $2cad/lb.
so
1. more likely to do with metal market prices..........I've seen plenty of mines here close the doors when metals fall below a certain $/Lb.
2. most mill worker jobs are 2-4x min wage
3. yes.........market flooding is a thing
4. market pricing - also helps if you own a mine which can provide a bunch of high quality ore
5. no clue on this
6. hmmm I'd say lack of skilled work force maybe, go in a high school class room and ask them if they know what a machinist is........most here don't anymore. Also hard to find and expect skilled hard working people for min wage..........

With the reduction of industry it leads to less trades and skilled labour as well.

In other news..lets all just look after ourselves and family+close friends/brother/sister. Enjoy the weather this week.
Let's hope it lasts. I'm off work next week.

The UK when its actually hot again with no AC.

Out of 3 AC units in our apartment. Only ONE works although its so old. Its probably on the verge of breaking. I dont know if they were there when we bought the apartment or if they were put in after but we didnt care about them a whole lot as we're not in HK during the hottest months.

I never planned to stay there for long periods and the trip Ive come back from is officially my longest stay. I'll probably be stinting there 3months at a time on and off. Maybe longer depending if I can get work out there. They could do with some English teachers so I was hoping to maybe do some temping there and teach the Queen's English.
