Toshiba Officially Exits the Laptop Business

Oh...I can't agree with that. I have had many a Toshiba laptop and rarely had any issues with them. Plus, they were unusually upgradable! I miss the Toshiba of yesteryear..
Well the ones I have are 2011 era so.. what years were yours from?

I was once asked to look for a good laptop, price, features, etc.
After looking around I recommended a Toshiba.
It was used lightly for a couple of years. Then it died.

I was heavily blamed for recommending it.

Looking around the web, I found out what seemed to be an engineering defect.
Capacitors that couldn't handle the temperature were placed where heat was higher than their rated spec, leading to failure.

Toshiba never bothered to recall the product, nor offered free repairs.
It was sold in the Asia-Pacific region, where consumer laws aren't taken seriously.

The last one I bought new was from 2013ish. It was a Qosmio X75 similar to the on in the article below, just with slightly different specs. Mine had Windows 7(because eff Windows 8) and a 480GB SSD otherwise it was the same. Wonderful laptop! Sturdy has hell too. I dropped that thing a couple of times and it never got more than a slight ding on the underside corner.

Indeed strong plastic.
Today plastic is bending like beckham, still i know a little thing about plastic as i worked 2 year at Games Workshop UK main branch lenton ng7 2ws.
The Warhammer 40,000 figurines where strong or weak depending by setter as in laptops manufacturers some they choose less material that is making the plastic to bend under low pressure, and this is wrong as the material is not expensive and can easy make a case strong and robust and not breakable.
I don't know why some manufacturers do choose cheap dosage for the case parts, maybe the reason is the big mc that creates the plastic cases consumes a looot's of watts and i mean literally thousands of watts.
The chosen material can make the product stronger or weaker. In addition, the thickness of the part can make the product stronger or weaker. I've seen new molds come in that made the same lid, laundry basket, etc and the new mold made the part like, a hundredth of an inch thinner or something. Doesn't seem like much, but multiply that over millions of cycles and somebody's saving some money on that ever so slightly thinner part.

Like that shitty "less plastic" bottles that make and annoying cracking sounds in the middle of the night that wakes everyone up. And the water squeezing out everywhere and wearing it. Ugh
