40fps = playable? Sure maybe. But frame-rate is life. Playing at a lower res with lower settings is ALWAYS better than a lower frame-rate. In my book, sub60fps is unacceptable.

I agree with this. Even on my Steam Deck I always adjust settings to hit 60 fps in w.e I am playing, 60 is bearable at least. Especially for Night in the Woods, which is what I am playing now on my Steam Deck, decided to take a break from Dishonored.

To me, 40 FPS is very playable in most games (Cyberpunk included). I actually finished the game at 40 FPS with maxed out settings, psycho RT, DLSS "Quality", 1080p on a 2070.

I've been a 30fps gamer for the longest time until I built the new rig. Still am if i'm playing games on my spare laptop on my lunch break. But on the gaming rig? It's 60fps or it's bust.

(Thankfully unless I turn on RT, I do get 60fps in everything :) )

40 with proper frame pacing in 120 Hz container would be just fine.

For cinematic / story oriented games I even try to lock FPS to 48~50 if I can't get true high refresh going at good IQ.

You get the 'TV' film effect that way. Soap opera effect is gone. 50 FPS I've found is a pretty nice stable FPS to run at. It just plays differently but for the general pace of anything that isn't a shooter/first person, it works really well. And honestly Cyberpunk isn't a real shooter, you definitely don't need to be quick at any time.

But I'm honestly fine either way. High refresh, 60, 40, 50. All fine. 30 though I find too slow and doesn't look nice on LCD either. On OLED, even 30 is acceptable for some games though.

Same here, in most cases I try to aim for somewhere around 45-50 FPS on average and crank up the settings accordingly.
I've finished Cyberpunk on tweaked high-ultra with RT reflections and lights on Ultra with DLSS on Quality and to me that was a perfectly enjoable experience.
Played a gun craze build with a machine gun and a shotgun with very minimal hacking and like no stealth at all on Hard and the FPS never caused any issues for me.

Years ago I had to finish Mafia 3 with the original 30 FPS mode/cap cause if I uncapped the game it was randomly crashing so I just dealt with the 30 FPS cap instead.
Took me a few days to get used to it but after that it was manageable in general tho I wasn't a fan of it.

I had to reinstall Cyberpunk a few days ago cause I wanted to try out that path tracing mode with the Nexus mod reducing the light bounces from 2 to 1 with some quality loss but its still better than Psycho RT.
With DLSS on quality I get around 30-40 FPS but I assume it would have some drops at more demanding places so its more like for taking screenshots and whatnot on my level of hardware. 'maybe in a few years I will revisit with a new mid range GPU or something'

I agree. I feel absolutely no need to upgrade my 1080p 60 Hz monitor. :) I don't like competitive gaming anyway.

Speaking of 30 FPS, I've just installed a passive 1050 Ti in my HTPC for complete silence, but it can only do 4K 60 Hz with limited colours and 4:2:0 chroma which ends up with washed out blacks and grayish whites. Ugly as hell. The other option is 30 Hz with full RGB colours.

playing Maneater DLC and Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun on GoG

I also played Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun for a few hours.
I liked the game itself, but the loading times were so long that my overall experience was negative.
It took a really abnormally long time to load the game on my hardware.

Zero issues over here with the loading times GoG games installed in HDD, but i had the same issue with Vampyr on EGS launcher and that killed for me the interest on going back and finish the game.
Like you said stupidly long loading times. Ive read somewhere that was because of Amd platform cuz Intel had no issues with this.

Regarding hardware

Small level of regret I didn't get FH5 in the Spring sale. Oh well, they are highly similar and FH6 will probably be too. It was this franchise or Wreckfest which didn't look all that great to me when it came out. Chances are high I pick up one of the hyper fast track racers next.

Cripes do they front load success with eight million car packs and a sickening amount of DLC in general. Still having a lot of fun right now thrashing a rally spec Lancia that has exactly zero chances of being vaped in or having a stereo capable of playing rap. Had to go with generic Asian dude character because he was the only male that wasn't packed into grapesmuggling capri pants. Wacky stuff, might have to heavily mod this game just to be able to focus on the racing aspect. Actual racing, not gooned up street racing in racing livery.

Ever tried BeamNG Drive?

I am looking at grabbing it, it seems more interesting that FH or Wreckfest.

At various points friends have tried getting me into one of the AC or BeamNg Drive. There has just never been a Gran Turismo on PS or any other sim I enjoyed. The fantasy of driving unattainable vehicles paired with nauseatingly complete attempts to... it places outsized amounts of attention on specious details that can be naturally adjusted for in real life.

Call it a near thing having access to the stationary cabin of a top tier race car might eventually and slowly overcome.

I do watch too much CarPal on YT to conceive of spending the requisite number of hours to really really have fun in BeamNg.

I've had coffee late in the day due to extenuating circumstances... so I'm preparing for the fact that when I fire up Elden Ring, I'm going to be teleported to 3am.

I really wanna push forward with this build, though. I'm going for a DEX/FAI hybrid and it's requiring a lot more levels, even sticking at 40 vig. Hybrid/quality builds require more stat investment to reach output comparable to that of pure, single-stat builds in ER. I'm ~110 now, and I think by level 150, I'll be there.

For weapons, I've basically just been dual wielding Guardian's Swordspears, which are spear-lookin halberds with big damage scaling. I think at max scaling you are looking at ~900 AR. That puts them on the same level as some of the most powerful legendary weapons in the game, with an added bonus of being fully buffable and able to take many different weapon skills. Even at 55 DEX, you are matching what many of the next best DEX weapons do at 80. Great for a hybrid, I cap at 55 DEX and with just two buffs can be over 800 AR with the things max upgraded with keen affinity. Unbuffed is ~600. That's more than strong enough for endgame. Kind of a loophole weapon for hybrids. It allows me to invest more in FAI, which is close to 40 now. I even use one to cover basic ranged. Spectral Lance on the off-hand spear, two hand it and start chuckin poise-breakers quickly over great distances for tiny FP. It is a great weapon, if you can get past the fact that they are made out of wood and look it. Sleeper weapon, literally THE best DEX weapon in terms of scaling. At 80 DEX you can pretty much just spam powerstance L1's and jump attacks. No AoW, casting, buffing. Just wap em with big pointy sticks. I don't wanna do that though - too boring.

I need a lot of FAI because incantations will be pivotal to the build. I want to take advantage of the lightning incants, especially some of the dragon cult ones with the red lightning. Some of those take 40+ FAI to use.

It goes hand in hand with the bolt of Gransax, which has an AoW that shoots a big red lightning bolt. The bolt of Gransax is that legendary spear you see jabbed into Leyndell itself, you find it by scaling that. It's a DEX spear, weirdly enough. But that AoW is very good compared to lightning projectile casts. And it just fits so well with a Tarnished that basically fights like Vyke, but has the cajones to burn their maiden and not cave to the god of chaos and madness.

But that means I need DEX for that to scale, and then FAI for the incantations. Big stat demands to do anything, but it ultimately pays off. And it's not like I had a hard time playing mostly DEX with the swordspears. I had a blast, actually. I plan on keeping one Guardian's Swordspear for actual melee combat. I can put lightning on that for awesome scaling with FAI, add an easy 200 AR boost, chug a lightning/DEX physick and really go nuts. When I need fire damage, I just use the blackflame weapon buff (yes, black flame deals fire damage.) I tried the bolt of Gransax in melee and I just hate the spear moveset, find it wayyy too repetitive. It's what I pull out to snipe with that AoW, while fighting more with lightning/dragon/bestial incantations out of an off-hand incant seal.

Basically, it's gonna be NG+. To even do 46/55 FAI/DEX with 40 vigor puts you over level 100. I need significant stamina and equip load, along with plenty of mind for the casting. It's a level 150+ build. So I think it will really be fun for late NG+. I'll probably stop leveling it ~160 and just see how it holds up. I don't want to overjuice it either. People say ER is punishing, but once you know the systems, what's actually hard is keeping your character from eventually destroying everything too easily.

Last night I remembered that I had Civilization Vi as a free game in the Epic Store, so I reinstalled it. Let's just say, by the time I quit the game to go to bed, it was frigging 4 am. I was playing as the Aztecs, I was having fun destroying & capturing cities, and the game's not even finished yet.

The previous games do not exist on PCs, so they should be an introduction or something.

Finished A Plague Tale Requiem (...very good game) and started God of War.

I feel something's missing though....A fxxxxxg introduction.
Who the hell is Kratos? Why am I God? Who are the enemies and why are they chasing us? etc etc etc
The previous games do not exist on PCs, so they should be an introduction or something.

There is probably an intro video on Youtube.

I had the same feeling at the start, but don't worry, your questions will be answered (at least some of them). :)

There is also a Wiki on Kratos. Not sure if it's a spoiler but it's pretty interesting about Kratos' background.

Keep playing, they'll answer some of those questions for you in the game. (one of these days I'm going to get around to playing Requiem)

Last night I remembered that I had Civilization Vi as a free game in the Epic Store, so I reinstalled it. Let's just say, by the time I quit the game to go to bed, it was frigging 4 am. I was playing as the Aztecs, I was having fun destroying & capturing cities, and the game's not even finished yet.

those were some of my happiest moments in my teenage years, used to do 12-14 hour marathon sessions all summer long... I did with Civilization III

spent 3 hours in bed last night playing Monster Train on my Steam Deck, I was cozy as fuck and it was insanely fun!!! Steam Deck isn't perfect for all games, or AAA games, but for indie games and card games like Monster Train, man it is an absolute blast.

I also downloaded CoD Advanced Warfare on my Steam Deck because I was curious (its the only CoD game listed as "Great on Deck") so I thought I would give it a try, honestly its fucking fantastic on steam deck, 60 fps, the aiming is very optimized, it doesn't feel like aim assist is helping me at all, even though it feels like I am aiming with really good precision, its so strange how good the aiming is on this with the Deck... its easily the best looking game I have played on Deck so far... honestly so impressive.

@Mindweaver did I mention to you yet how much I fucking love my Steam Deck? ok I'll stop haha

if Steam Deck 2 can be OLED 1080, reduce the black border some, have rdna4 and zen 5 optimized APU, and Arch Linux get Freesync to work, make it 75hz (75hz OLED will feel like 100hz IPS) and that is the sweet spot before diminishing returns takes place exponentially.. im fine if battery life stays the same, I can get 3-4 hours battery life in indie games in airplane mode.

I'm buying Deck 2 regardless of price or when it comes out, I am just so fucking impressed by it.

Post any more about your gaming experiences on the Steam Deck, and I might buy one! Seriously man, stop it! My wallet can't keep up with all this goodness.
