Not sure if it counts as a tech purchase but it's definitely one of the most cherished pieces of my setup right now! I've been reading way too many of @VSG's great audio equipment reviews lately and earlier this week I've been looking for headphones, and scored this vintage Japanese Sony MDR-V7 in about as great a condition as you'll find cans that were manufactured between 1987 and 1992. They're older than me!

20230620_090200.jpg

The set has 40 mm amorphous titanium diaphragm with samarium cobalt magnets. The pads aren't originals but they are very comfortable - the headband and cable and unimatch plug seem to be, and replacement parts for the MDR-7506 generally work with this set, so hopefully I will be its final owner, and for a while to come :)

20230620_091247.jpg

The reproduction is remarkably accurate, to a point that it feels harsh and disconcerting without equalization. The treble resolution in particular is exceptionally high to the point that it felt really harsh at first, with generally shouty vocals and can easily overwhelm the bass - which also sounds pristine at the cost of having almost no rumble/feedback. It's not boomy at all, with a bloomy, subtle feel to the lower range frequencies between 50 and 100 Hz.

20230620_091535.jpg

I've been listening to flacs all night on them (please don't ask how many times did I listen to Wolf Hurricane from the Dragon Ball OST alone) and it's been a delight, as far as equalization goes, the AutoEQ database doesn't support this headphone, the best I've managed to find so far was a Harman curve preset by innerfidelity intended for the MDR-V6 (which is very similar to this model, but a bit lower end in general and perhaps more importantly, still manufactured), interestingly Crinacle's preset for the V6 sounded pretty awful to my ears. Still a work in progress on my end though :p

All in all this cost me a little less than a new MDR-7506 costs in my region. I think it was a steal!

Don't want to sound like a typical forum jerk, but what you described sounds like a standard studio headphone traits. They are not designed to sound good, but accurate, and throughout the entire frequency range at that. Flat as they can be.
Great find, enjoy.

Indeed, from what I've read, interestingly enough, these were initially released as headphones intended for consumer use and meant to be Sony's reference design for CD listening. But they quickly caught the attention of sound engineers, and eventually Sony released a variant of the MDR-V6 (the famous MDR-7506) under their professional brand. There's a very neat website about them:

I'm really enjoying it so far. The EQ really does wonders in taming a bit of its treble harshness :)

You cant use userbenchmark for anything other than as insight to mental illness.

Seriously, don't. You can google why, especially for anything AMD - the sites metrics are based on the owners madness and how much profit they get from affiliate links, theres been times i3's outperformed i9's on there
wow, so they show i3 better than i9? then there's something inherently wrong with that site.
10nm and a new architecture. Comparing 11th to 12th gen would be more accurate.
i didn't even know that 11th gen is 10nm, i thought it would be same as 10th gen as both are on same socket

Changed my ISP recently and needed a new router, got this one

ASUS RT-AX82U

wifi 6e? must have been ultra expensive, looks kinda flagship stuff

Tiger Lake 11th gen is 10 nm, but desktop (Rocket Lake) 11th gen is its 14 nm backported sibling.

It is 14nm, but the architecture is more similar to 12th gen than 10th gen.

I am replacing my old living room PC which I use like an overpriced console most the time.
I bought a 5800X3D, RX 7900 XTX, Lian Li Dan A4-H2O, SF750 and other components.
I went with the 5800X3D because the cheapest AM5 ITX board is $260 right now. This is compared to $130 for an AM4 B550 board. And I already have spare DDR4 memory.
The case could fit a RTX 4080 FE but I was hoping to give AMD a chance again (and save $250 too). I'll see if that pans out.

If you are hooking this up to a 4K TV prepare to be blown away. Especially if it has 120 Hz and above refresh rates and supports VRR (Freesync). Make sure you enable RE-bar in the BIOS. You should also see the most VRAM usage in Games but also a sustained boost clock as well.

The TV is an LG C2 65" OLED which as I understand does 4K 120Hz with VRR.
I'm upgrading because of Diablo IV mainly.

As someone who eventually does some 120Hz on an LG C1, I can only say you'll be very glad.

OMG you are going to fall in love with PC Gaming again. On a screen that size Diablo 4 will be spectacular. I have found that adjusting the contrast and colour on 4K TVs can have a dramatic impact on screen enjoyment.

I'm pairing a 65 inch G2 with a 4090 and it's a match made in heaven even with your 7900XTX it should be amazing.

Now take contrast and color and dial'em up to 11. That's OLED.

I have two pairs of V6's and two 7506's I bought new when they first came out. If I recall correctly all were $50 each new. I've been through several sets of earpads over the years and a couple of years ago discovered the genuine lambskin pads from Brainwavz. Not only do they seal better for more accurate sound they're more comfortable and so far a lot more durable. In the USA they're usually $19 a pair during the constant special sales Brainwavz has. Well worth buying IMO. The 7506's have been the standard of the professional broadcast industry for decades now.

Last month I built a PC for a local radio station. I had them buy all the parts then assembled it for them. This was the PC I posted about where Newegg originally sent a horribly warped motherboard. I had them buy a B-stock Arctic Liquid Freezer II 240 off Arctic's Ebay site. It arrived missing all mounting hardware. I contacted Arctic, they opened a case in the name of the person who ordered it but he never followed through on getting the hardware. I hit my stash of Arctic hardware and supplied what was needed for the build.

Last week I needed some of the things I'd used for the build. I called and explained to them what had happened and they said they'd send me a complete mounting kit. It arrived this morning with a hand written note thanking me for supplying the missing parts to the customer plus they sent me a huge 42 gram tube of MX-4 as thanks for taking care of it. All things considered I now have a lifetime supply of MX-4. For outstanding customer service Arctic is the best.

wow, so they show i3 better than i9? then there's something inherently wrong with that site.

i didn't even know that 11th gen is 10nm, i thought it would be same as 10th gen as both are on same socket

wifi 6e? must have been ultra expensive, looks kinda flagship stuff
it is wi-fi 6 but not that expensive, it was £137. I am quite happy with it.

Unfortunately I am paying a little more than I would have liked - Was looking at £30-35 but this is already 51% off and comes with a spare spool. Will need to sort out other things like braid and leaders next.

The be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 as a temp cooler for the 7700X, and later for when the cpu block arrives some paste.

Still working out some odd behavior like the vga led being constantly on, which is gondor-calls-for-aid bright (hence the piece of paper).
Also HWiNFO64 claims there's no cpu temp sensor :(

edit: I needed to update HWiNFO64 to the latest version. Now I have cpu temp enabled on my Stream deck.
The bright vga led was gone when I switched to my old monitor. So for now I'll keep the wee lil 27" 1440p.
