Nope, and that goes for any video card.

Just upgraded the RX480 to a 2nd hand RX 6800 this past summer.

Good for at least another 5 years now.

I really wanted to buy a reference 7900XTX at launch, for a number of reasons. For one, I'm limited to 30.5cm for the graphics card, and I don't feel like replacing my case -- which leaves out the AIB models.
My current GPU would get moved to a secondary AM4 rig, which I'm planning to build in a few months. As I rarely replace the graphics card, I want to see at least double the performance. The 7900XTX fits that requirement, and would also nicely complement my recently purchased 4K monitor. I play older games, but wouldn't mind giving a few newer ones a try.

That said, I'm a little disappointed with the performance of the reference model. Obviously, I didn't expect it to rival the 4090 in 4K, but I was hoping for a decisive 10-20% win over the 4080 across all resolutions. Though the slightly lower than expected performance wasn't a critical factor in putting my purchase on hold. Coming from a 6600XT, I find the 7900XTX's power consumption during video playback abhorrent. Unless this can be fixed in the driver, I may have to skip this card altogether, regrettably.

I was also expecting a bit better efficiency in games, though for me it's easily fixed with a 60 fps lock. And hopefully the woeful acoustic performance of the reference model's cooler can be sorted out by adjusting the fan curve.

All in all, I feel the reference 7900XTX is somewhat overpriced for what it offers. Not to mention the AIB cards, which are now showing with the same price as the 4080. I may re-consider buying the XTX next year, when the prices drop to more reasonable levels.

No

…because my GPU budget always is/was below 500€.
Bought the 5700XT for 410€. And the higher price I ever spend was about 450€

So I’m willing to go as far as 500€ if the right GPU is there.

No - I don't buy Nvidia x90 or AMD x900 class GPUs anymore. The last one I had was a Radeon HD 7970. I recently bought a 6750 XT, and even this is overkill for most of the things I need it for.

I'm right with you on that.

And before somebody starts, it's not because I can't increase my budget. I could, but I consider it a waste spending so much on a GPU that I don't even need.

Care to share the PROS for both of those reviews or are you just gonna keep skewing things in a negative way?

And I voted "no" in the poll because both cards (and competing cards from Nvidia) are unnecessary for my meager gaming needs/monitor resolution. That said, I'm looking to get a 6650 XT next month to replace my aging GTX 1660 SUPER.

I did just buy a RX 7900XTX and It is an amazing improvement over the 6700XT. Factory overclocked I'm getting 40 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 with all graphics maxed Ray tracing ultra 4k. This thing is a powerhouse! 380w power draw! File size too big to upload lol

No because they are very subjective, bordering with outright lies.

  • Big performance jump vs last generation
is a lie

  • Ray tracing performance improved
very controversial?

  • Beautiful design
??

  • Backplate included
  • No 16-pin power cables required
Err??

At this point it seems like buying either makes you a beta tester of a 900$+ product, no thanks.

No. Aiming towards a 6800 due to a better balance of price and power, as well as the option of W7 drivers.

this is one thing that does bother me about my 6800 xt, its the msi trio version, uses 3x8 pin connectors? why i have no idea. but it draws about 300 watts when gaming, so same as a 7900 xtx when gaming... which makes me a bit sad, cause its like all that performance for the same electricity price.

but eh, whats done is done.

Reference 7900XTX is a 355W card and AIBs are 400+W.
Reference 7900XT is a 300W card.

There is nothing really to complain as every new gen improves perf/watt ratio.

As for the 3x8pins, probably your card has potentially increased power limit. But you have to increase it yourself from drivers. Not worth it if you ask me.

Indeed. The power difference between non-XT and XT doesn't match the performance uplift. And besides, the XT doesn't even lead in price/performance ratio where I live.

I would buy the XTX if it was cheaper.
Being stuck with a 2080Ti, the only alternative is a second hand 3080 Ti/3090.

That the AIBs' 7900 XTXs can be overclocked to >3GHz is a plus, can hardly wait to get back and see what that badboy can do. With a 20% OC, framerate in games should see some uplift...

I don't plan on buying either one. But who knows? I actually wanted to get a 6800XT for $650 when those came out in 2020. It never happened. I managed to snag an overpriced RTX 3080 combo from the newegg shuffle in 2021. I luckily sold that before the price crash and ended up with two new 6900XT for $700 a piece this year.

I see the 7900s falling in price once the cheap 6900XTs finally dry up. Same thing with the RTX supply.

IF you look closely at the pics of the MERC 310 RX 7900 XT, you'd find that it has only 2x 8pin, place where the 3rd 8pin connector's supposed to be is empty. As for the pic of the Red Devil RX 7900 XT at newegg, I think they had used pics of the RX 7900 XTX instead. The PowerColor site itself states that the Red Devil RX 7900 XT has two 8pin PCIe power connectors.
