I didn't notice this copilot thing even happened oddly I did notice they shifted away from edge towards a dedicated co-pilot tray app not long ago. I didn't noticed blue screens and trashed SSD's though thankfully.

One of my relatives has a desktop with an i3-6100 that still handles basic tasks just fine, especially with an SSD. His computer will not run Windows 11 officially, but I was wondering if there are any catches to installing Windows 11 on an unsupported PC with workarounds i.e. lack of updates, watermarks, etc.

I thought they got rid of the TPM requirement? You should just be able to install it now AFAIK

If he just wants basic tasks move him to Ubuntu - install office suite etc. and be done.

Use rufus or use an auto unattended file to remove TPM check and all the other barriers. Stick to 23H2 and update it using WAU, turn off Windows Update along with it improving drivers automatically. Pretty straight forward if you get everything set up correctly beforehand. From there your concern is getting their likely outdated must have programs to work.

Doable but every situation is unique.

Not really a problem thankfully. He just uses Chrome and Office.

What benefit does turning off Windows Update have besides maybe helping reduce resources? I haven't heard of that one before.

You asked what limitations or conditions make W11 on hardware of that age feasible. Turn off all the telemetry etc. during install and make a local account using Pro or above. Try these two links for a good place to start (with thanks to @lexluthermiester and a few others who greatly foreshortened work I was doing).

Beyond that I think you will find very few here who use supported processors allow Windows Updates. Want proof, read upthread a few messages or do a web search on what a disaster state they are in. Business update very rarely outside of dire security updates with good reason. Always best to wait until the dust settles on updates.

I think compliance with requirements is still, well, required.

Just use Rufus anyway. Chances are most people don't care for TPM, SecureBoot, Microsoft Account and maybe some other thing I forgot about.

Hi. Didn't want to make a new thread, figure to ask here instead. Hopefully that's ok.
I have 7 rows of desktop icons. They seem to refresh periodically.
Yes OC and no OC. does it anyways, but mostly OC.
OS seems to operate fine otherwise. Benchmarking, browsing, even some gaming, FPS as expected. All good here.

But the icon refresh thing is annoying. Anyone have an idea what's up? My OS partially smoked maybe? (could be expected, I do OC>)

Can you show screenshots? Or would that help?

Explorer.exe crashing? It should tell you in Windows reliability monitor.

Seconded. Refreshing icons are usually a symptom of something failing either with explorer or DWM as a whole. Dumb question, but have you tried clean wiping and reinstalling the GPU drivers? If yes and that didn’t help, then running sfc and DISM to try and re-establish system integrity could be the play. If THAT doesn’t show anything… hmmm, that would be curious. I’ll have a think about this.

It would be extremely difficult to get a screenshot. lol. They just refresh really quickly.

No idea, I can try and retrieve anything you guys like, but I gotta run out take the kid driving for hours. Fun of my life... lol.

Here's something for now? Note: I feel it happens more often than any of those errors.

@Onasi I do install and uninstall drivers a bit. The current driver is not up to date. I can definitely try this later.

Ok, so what you're saying is that the desktop is acting like you are hitting F5 with you actually hitting it?
I'm not seeing anything that stands out in that list. Perhaps this is a service starting and end frequently. What about the Windows Logs->System screen?

@Solaris17 @R-T-B @freeagent or anyone else, does anyone else see anything out of order here?

The only thing that comes to mind on the "hinky" side of things would be an intrusion type thing of the remote-desktop variety or some form of malware.

24H2 is the problem. Runs great until it doesn't. Then you somehow fix the issues and it run greats again until it doesn't. Basically you keep updating until the fix gets applied to the right program or you isolate and uninstall it like with the jointly shared HWiNFO / MSI Afterburner issue.

I am curious about thr Kernal Event trace, but thats going beyond my OS language. I'm like most users in this aspect. I don't know what I'm looking at. I just know less stuff installed the better.

Going to try the display drivers later this evening for sure to start with.

@nomdeplume it is W11 24H2 that originally started as W10. It's been pretty solid for over 6 months, but this icon refresh thing has been going on for a while. I cannot say for sure it was happening before 24H2 install. It seriously performs well with just this one quirk. I've done folding at home with it. Nothing seems bothered by it except me lol.

an SSD makes a HUGE difference in any slightly older machine. I've given new life to the 5th gen forward on Windows 10 simply by imaging to an NVMe drive.

WinUpdate error usually means a hosed OS to me.. but tbh I am not sure.. Memory crashes or bluescreens that are OC related are usually pretty brutal lol :D

Click on it and show it. My hunch is that it's unrelated, but anything is possible.
