The 4669 v3 is also quite heavy for a CPU, those big Xeons are a solid chunk of silicon alright. With a price to match...

Gotta say, shame that since HEDT with borrowed platform died, cheap Xeons aren't as much of a thing anymore. A w9-3495X on the cheap a few years down the road, I wouldn't say no

I have an emerald rapids ES somewhere but no board for it.

That as big as normal sized credit card. If you had a proper calibrated digital scale and weighed that comparing it to a standard xeon chip it must have cost a fortune just to buy one let alone having multiple cpus

I have this and an emerald rapids chip. They are bigger than a credit cards by a little. I need to work on my test machine soon and take the emerald rapids CPU out. When I do I can snap some pics. That one is only a 24/48 cpu though.

Could it be that I have turned my 2690 into a key holder. Trying to fit it into the plastic case with force that wasn't meant to fit perfectly, I nitched the paint on the substrate and now ch3 is faulty and causes games to quit abruptly, not showing up in any other way, nor in the Prime 95 tests.

You have a beast of a processor and I can't figure out what you did. That processor simply must not cause any problems. I know this because I've been using xeon processors for years and none of them have ever caused a problem. You should really show me some photos.

Lost a channel can point toward the chip or the socket is damaged due the installation process

It's not like it's a big loss anyway. Market value of a Xeon E5-2690 is currently $4.52, might as well just replace it and upgrade with a 2697 v2.

This, IF the CPU is the problem. If there a socket issue though, the situation changes.

More likely to be a bit of oxidation in the memory socket imo, using a bit of contact cleaner spray after a few years is a great idea, high chance it fixes the "dead" channel

Some contact cleaner, DeOxit and soft-bristle paint brush would swiftly solve that issue.

Could also be in the CPU socket, which does happen once in a while. Also easily cleaned, but gently so.

All depends on the socket if it has melted/broken/missing pins you are out of luck on repairing that unless you can find a repair company who can change the full socket than changing the full board

Bent pins aren't the nightmare many think they are. It's dependent on the kind of damage involved, but if they're just a bit wonky, bending them back into place is fairly easy. I've done socket pin repairs many times and unless they're totally mangled, it's a reasonable shout to fix.

Due to limited space with the video card present in the slot I had to fight the cooling retention mechanism the two clips unevenly clicking one by one and probably bent the substrate, hard to believe maybe disconnecting some internal traces in the process or the motherboard was slightly twisted, who knows.

Bent substrate on the chip yikes you can check it using a razor blade to see if it bent on any corner by standing the blade up and using light

Wait, how does that work? The 2690 and 4627V4 are two very different platforms. Did I miss something somewhere?

V4, the one with on more bga array speciffic PCB under the IHS. Maybe that's the point of failure and I could bake it in the oven. Everything looks new and shiny.

One is the server variant of the chip I run personally the xeon plat 8480c

The other is the little brother of the chip currently in my test server. The 24core 4516Y+.

They are real real test chips though. ES samples.

Hello everyone. soon in some weeks i hope i will upgrade from my E5 1650 V2 to a E5 1680 V2 . Saw it got lower in price since i checked online when i got the 1650 V2 back in February so i got one.
Hope it overcloks fine with not too much thinkering. Been having a weird unstability with the E5 1650 v2 for some time . I think it might not be stable enough anymore to keep it at 4.5 or 4.4 . I will update when i get the new Xeon and hope for the best

6core to an 8core is a reasonable upgrade. The hit to the clock speed will be a thing, but...

I think it might not be stable enough anymore to keep it at 4.5 or 4.4 .

...you're OCing so that might not matter much. Just a tip, from what I've seen, you should expect about 4.2 to 4.3 all-core from that 1680V2 pushing it much faster will give diminishing returns while requiring much more voltage and producing a ton of unwanted heat.
