Hi all;

Does anyone know if the E5-1680-v2 has the processor die soldered to the IHS? I cannot seem to find any confirmation one way or the other.

Yes, the LGA 2011 and 2011 v3 Xeons across all generations are soldered. The same applies for the Core i7 counterparts.

I want to show you another build. I switched after aprox one year from
Intel Xeon Sapphire Rapids (4gen) QYFS 56 Cores 112 Threads 105MB L3 Cache, ASUS W790E-SAGE W790 8channel, 128GB 8x16GB DDR5, ASUS ROG RTX4090, Fractal Define 7 XL to
Intel Xeon Emerald Rapids (5gen) Q2SR 64 Cores 128 Threads 320MB L3 Cache, GIGABYTE MS03-CE0 C741 8channel, 128GB 4x32GB DDR5 (but soon 256GB 8x32GB), PALiT RTX4070 AD103 (but soon RTX5080/5090), Antec FLUX Pro
Now I'm just waiting for the new Nvidia graphics cards to be released.
I love my Xeon builds, both current and former. I don't understand why more people don't use Xeons (I've had a few Threadrippers and they're great too).

Ordered an E5-2620 v2 for $6. For testing purposes only. If the motherboard in question ends up being fully functional, I might pull the trigger on the E5-1680 v2, because why not. At $40 price is still a bit on the higher side for an Ivy bridge CPU, but it's still the best OC/higher clock capable one for the X79 platform.

1680v2 was like 100 around this time last year. Snagged one for similar price to what it is now.

Now it's significantly cheaper alright, it used to be closer to $100 for a long time. But even now it may be too much for some, and finally just right for the others. It probably depends on the level of enthusiasm or/and amounts of a spare cash available. :D I'm not getting richer (materially) lately, alas...
 
Well, I've been in the Xeon club for years now, but I did just "upgrade" from my 2010 Mac pro to a 2013 Mac Pro. These have gotten really cheap on eBay. I got a D700 model with 64GB RAM (no SSD) for $215. It came with the 1650v2, but I immediately cracked it open and put the 2697v2 I already had in there instead. Main purpose is for basic computing and running CaptureOne 2023, which really doesn't need that much GPU power. I know not everyone cared for the Trash Can design of the 6,1, but it's an amazing bit of engineering, IMO, especially as you take it apart to do the CPU swap. It's a shame it never got a GPU upgrade. It would have been cool to see this get redesigned to have the CPU on one side, a single Navi GPU on another side, and multiple SSD bays on the third.

PowerPC Macs were similar. Absolutely non-intuitive to crack open, but slick as snot to dis- and reassemble once you knew how.
 
Just back with an update on my set up it still stuck in my mother's house as well she managed to burn down the kitchen no less than 10 minutes leaving the house all this happened on the 7th of November 2024. So yeah it a disaster in the long run
 
Hello guys.

I just joined your select club with a second (or third) hand IBM X3500 M2 the problem is that it's to noisy so i want to switch the cooler radiators with some classic desktop coolers and also to take out the 6 noisy fans. The problem is i don't see any pins on the mainboard to connect the desktop coolers. 1) Any other idea of how can i make this beast quiet?

2) And to not spam you much with a second post i have another question. I want to upgrade my i5-7600K to an E5 2680 v4. I think it's the best and cheapest option for me to use it at gaming and learning/playing with virtual.
machines. What do you know about X99 (MACHINIST, MOUGUL, HUANANHZI, QIYIDA) mainboards from AliExpress?

The problem is i don't see any pins on the mainboard to connect the desktop coolers.
You'll likely need to use a molex/sata power adapter cable to get power to the fans. As such, PWM will not work. Your fans will run full speed all the time.
What do you know about X99 (MACHINIST
I have personal experience with the Machinist brand. They're solid quality and work as they should. I know nothing about the other brands.

Yes, can you see the small heatsink for your Broadwell Xeon (CPU)? You need to replace it with an alternative!
Especially, if you want to run 120W E5 2680v4 on that!

What I would do is to find alternative (bigger) heatsink that fits that lower case on your motherboard.
If that does not work, then a complete teardown is in order to pull out motherboard, remove the lower case for cooler & install another one which can accomodate a larger heatsink! :cool:

BTW, if you are going with 2nd CPU installation, do get a proper cooler (heatsink with fan) on it.

not X99, they are the discontinued H81. And you have to wonder where they have been soldered since then. I have a C612 that is at least on the branch of X99. H81 is a Socket 1150 chipset.
You have to get a beefy motherboard to get X99.

This very greatly depends on the config of the board. If Quad channel ram is present and available on the board, it's X99 or a derivative chipset. If only dual channel is available then it's something else. However, even if it's something else the only downside is the lack of the extra two channels. The board will be stable otherwise. So an 8core CPU, with board and a bunch of RAM for under $110? That's a good value.

The thing to watch for with Chinese X99 motherboards is that not all of them have a real X99 or C612 (server equivalent) chipset. Some seem to have desktop chipsets wired somehow, like H81 and B85, even though they were never intended to be used with LGA 2011v3 Core i7 or Xeon E5 chips. Make sure quad-channel support is advertised. And of course, you shouldn't generally expect the same build quality of actual X99's from back then, though they are almost always far cheaper so that offsets it.

Another solid option are the Erying motherboards. They generally get BGA mobile processors and make desktop motherboards with them. My brother got one with the Core i9-11980HK for pretty cheap a while ago, it runs with his RTX 3070 pretty great.

As for your server... I'll owe you that one. These machines were by design noisy, you'll have to research what can be done for your specific machine and get creative about it.

I have the 2680 v4 on a Gigabyte X99 Ultra Gaming - you can see it few pages up, and it doesn't get even close to 120W in reality. It's even more power efficient than the 18 core 4669 v3 I also happen to have. IPC uplift on Broadwell is decent, this 14 core chip performs to about the same level.

I was talking about TDP listed on Intel web page, as that is usually what you need to have to cool CPU down when using it all the time (like in BOINC). :cool:

Yeah. I know. But in both CPU's cases I haven't seen them above 80. These are super efficient :)

So i should avoid the models with dual channel only?
I have 2x16 GB ram so i don't see a problem on dual channel only :)
Also your machinist suported only ECC memories or my 2x16 DDR4, 3000MHz, CL16, 1.2V are compatible?

Not at all unless the quad channel bandwidth is important to you. For gaming, dual channel memory does not hamper performance much(if at all) compared to quad channel.

Not only those types. Those boards are designed specifically to take almost any type of memory you want to install, as long as all the RAM modules are type matched, IE, ECCReg, ECC, standard. Mismatched types will still result in a non-booting system. Otherwise whatever you've got will work fine.
