Samsung Display has reportedly developed the world's first 27-inch OLED panel capable of a 500 Hz refresh rate at 2560x1440p resolution. The new panel utilizes Samsung's QD-OLED (Quantum Dot OLED) technology, which combines the color accuracy of Quantum Dots with the contrast and responsiveness of OLED displays. The panel is nearing the end of its development phase, and Samsung is reportedly in discussions with leading monitor manufacturers, aiming to introduce products featuring the panel to the market by mid-2025. This development adds to the growing competition in the gaming display market. For example, Chinese company Light Soul is preparing to release a 27-inch QD-OLED monitor with 4K resolution, a 240 Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 1000 nits. Meanwhile, LG plans to launch a 45-inch monitor model featuring a 5120x2160 WOLED panel.

Across the industry, OLED is being transformed using various technologies, and every panel maker, including Samsung and LG, wants to stay ahead of the curve with high-refresh, high-color accuracy panels. The high-refresh-rate market is currently led by LG UltraGear 27GX790A-B and ASUS ROG Swift PG27AQDP 1440p monitors that max out at 480 Hz. While e-sports players might need the extra 20 Hz, regular users surely wouldn't notice the extra refresh. Nonetheless, it is interesting to see that OLED is getting lots of love in the coming year, and the constant development of it will not stop. We

Gigabyte has launched a couple of new QD-OLED monitors in 27- and 32-inch flavors. Although targeted primarily at the gaming crowd, these new monitors do not bear the AORUS branding.

The 27-inch variant has been dubbed the MO27Q2, and rocks a 1440p panel with a refresh rate of 240 Hz. At 109 PPI, the monitor is likely best suited for content consumption rather than creation, although the claimed 99% DCI-P3 coverage and maximum HDR brightness of 1,000 nits (3% APL) might suggest otherwise. Being an OLED, the response times are exceptionally fast, at 0.03 ms G2G.

NVIDIA today announced incoming changes to its GeForce Now game streaming service, some of which are not likely to sit well with gamers. The biggest, and likely most controversial change coming to GeForce Now is the addition of monthly playtime caps for all GeForce Now users, regardless of which plan they're on. According to the blog post announcing the changes, GeForce Now gamers will be limited to 100 hours of gameplay per month in addition to the daily playtime caps. NVIDIA will allow gamers who don't use their whole monthly cap to roll 15 hours of game time into the following month.

It's not all bad news, however, as NVIDIA also announced that it will be increasing the resolution and image quality of the GeForce Now Performance tier—previously Priority—from 1080p to 1440p. The Ultimate and Basic tiers remain unchanged in both name and feature set. NVIDIA says the playtime limit was necessary in order "to continue providing exceptional quality and speed—as well as shorter queue times." Of course players can buy extra playtime at a rate of $2.99 for 15 hours of GeForce Now Performance and $5.99 for 15 hours of GeForce Now Ultimate. The playtime limits will come into effect on January 1, 2025, and anyone that signs up for a paid GeForce Now subscription before then won't be subjected to the new playtime limits until January 2026.

Sony has today added to its INZONE gaming gear range with the INZONE M10S - a 27-inch OLED gaming monitor that is changing the game with super high 480 Hz refresh rate, 0.03 ms response time and QHD resolution. Co-developed with leading esports team Fnatic, the INZONE M10S is designed to be tournament ready thanks to a 24.5-inch playing mode and new FPS Pro modes.

Sony is also introducing the INZONE M9 II - an update to its 4K HDR gaming monitor with backlight scanning added to improve motion clarity.

NVIDIA quietly released a variant of the GeForce RTX 4070 featuring slower 20 Gbps GDDR6 memory, replacing the 21 Gbps GDDR6X that the original RTX 4070 comes with. Wccftech has access to a GALAX branded RTX 4070 GDDR6, and put it through benchmarks focused on comparing it to a regular RTX 4070. Memory type and speed are the only changes in specs, the core-configuration isn't changed, nor is the GPU clock speed. Wccftech's testing shows that the RTX 4070 GDDR6 measures within 0-1% slower than the RTX 4070 (GDDR6X) at 1080p and 1440p resolutions; while the difference between the two is about 2% at 4K Ultra HD.

Wccftech's test-bed is comprehensive, with 27 game tests, each across 3 resolutions; and 7 synthetic tests. The synthetic tests are mainly part of the 3DMark test suite, including Speed Way, Fire Strike, Time Spy, Port Royal, and their presets. Here, the RTX 4070 GDDR6 is nearly identical in performance, with a 0-0.2% delta with the RTX 4070 GDDR6X. In the game tests, performance varies by resolution. 1080p has 0-1% performance delta, with the only noteworthy outliers being "Metro Exodus" (extreme preset), where the RTX 4070 GDDR6 loses 4.2%, and "Alan Wake 2," where it loses 2.3%.

ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) today announced availability of the ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDP gaming monitor. It boasts a 32-inch 4K WOLED anti-reflective panel that delivers HD and UHD visuals with impressive motion clarity and desktop fluidity due to its ultra high dual mode refresh rate and low pixel response. The PG32UCDP enables users to switch from 4K @ 240 Hz to FHD @ 480 Hz depending on the game you are playing as well as the importance of motion clarity. Aspect ratio control customization allows for further resolution and refresh customization.

Third-generation ROG OLED and Micro Lens Array Plus (MLA+) technologies enable the PG32UCDP to showcase 15% brighter images compared to other monitors in its class. The PG32UCDP delivers vibrant colors and contrast is outstanding alongside impressive peak HDR performance for video and gaming content. MSI has become something of a major player in the gaming monitor market and the company had a range of new OLED and QD-OLED models on display at Computex 2024. Let's start with the biggest buzzword model, the MEG 321URX QD-OLED which MSI claims is the world's first true AI gaming monitor. The so-called AI engine is supposed to help gamers lose less with features like AI Skysight which scans the game's mini map in real time for threats and then points them out to the player. There's also the ability to display certain stats on the monitor's "SpectrumBar" which is an RGB light strip below the monitor. Looking at the actual specs we find a next-gen 31.5-inch, 4K QD-OLED display panel with 240 Hz refresh rate and a 0.03 ms grey to grey response time. There was no mention of any HDR certification for this model.

Connectivity wise many of you will not be happy to see DisplayPort 1.4 as the main input, although it also has two HDMI 2.1 ports, a USB Type-C with DP Alt-mode support that also offers 98 Watts of USB PD charging, one USB 2.0 Type-B input, two USB 2.0 Type-A outputs and a headphone jack. KVM support is part of the package and MSI states it has improved the cooling by using a graphene film and a custom heatsink so the QD-OLED panel should run cooler than competing products. The MEG 321URX finally comes with OLED Care 2.0 which MSI claims will "significantly reduce the chances of OLED screen burn-in" according to the information provided at the show. According to TFTCentral, it will cost US$1700, but there's no availability date as yet.

Acer today debuted two new premium Chromebook Plus laptops - the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 and Acer Chromebook Plus 516 GE - that combine versatile designs with a 2x faster Intel Core processor and up to double the memory and storage, giving people the power to do even more all at once.

As Chromebook Plus devices, the two new models support enhanced generative AI features for connectivity, creativity, and collaboration, such as a "help me write" feature available with just a right click, Google Photos' Magic Editor, Gemini, and more. The Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 is a slim convertible optimized for on-the-go productivity and connectivity with a 360-degree hinge that allows it to be used in myriad ways and places, and the Acer Chromebook Plus 516 GE is a next-generation cloud-gaming Chromebook with the latest gaming-centric hardware to stream and play AAA games with NVIDIA GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Boosteroid, Amazon Luna and more.

Today is a good day for those of you that have wanted a glossy OLED gaming monitor, as ASUS has launched the ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDMG, which is a glossy WOLED gaming monitor. The ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDMG sports a 2560 x 1440 pixel WOLED display with a 240 Hz refresh rate and a 0.03 ms grey to grey response time. ASUS also claims up to 20 percent brighter image in SDR mode and deeper black hues under any lighting conditions, quite something to live up to. On the more technical side, the panel is said to offer a 1.5 million to one contrast ratio, support for 99 percent of the DCI-P3 colour space or 135 percent of the RGB colour space and it's should also have 10-bit colour support.

Connectivity wise, there will be disappointing sights from some, as the ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDMG relies on a single DP 1.4 with DSC and a pair of HDMI 2.0 ports for video inputs, which means the HDMI ports are limited to 144 Hz. It also only has two USB 3.2 Gen 1 5 Gbps ports and no USB Type-C input, although there's a headphone jack for those that want to use that. Other features include FreeSync Premium and G-Sync Compatible support, as well as ASUS' trace free technology, GamePlus, shadow boost and OLED care. No word on official pricing at this point in time, but it's non-glossy counterpart retails for US$900.

Update May 21st: ASUS has announced the offical pricing for the ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDMG and the MSRP is US$699, which makes it around US$200 cheaper than its non-glossy counterpart. It'll go on sale from the 30th of May.

Acer today launched its first Copilot+ PC with the Swift 14 AI laptop, in collaboration with Microsoft and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., ushering in a new AI era with brand new user experiences and AI capabilities on Windows 11. AMD in an announcement on Tuesday, announced changes to its AMD FreeSync display requirements. The updated requirements should vastly reduce the flood of 1080p and 1440p displays with lower refresh rates, such as 75 Hz, from boasting of FreeSync support. AMD has three tiers of FreeSync based on the refresh-rate and features such as HDR. The base tier FreeSync feature now calls for a desktop monitor or TV to come with a refresh rate of at least 144 Hz, if its horizontal resolution is under 3440 pixels. This would cover everything 2560 x 1600, to 2560 x 1440, to the popular 1920 x 1080, and certain ultrawide resolutions such as 2560 x 1080.

To qualify for the FreeSync Premium tier, which customers use to identify high refresh-rate displays; a desktop monitor or TV with a horizontal resolution under 3440 pixels now needs at least 200 Hz of refresh rate. Displays with over 3440 pixels (which should include 4K Ultra HD), now need at least 120 Hz to qualify for FreeSync Premium. AMD isn't clear on what refresh-rate it takes for a 4K UHD display to qualify for the base FreeSync tier. Moving on, the top FreeSync Premium Pro tier, which helps customers identify displays that not only have high refresh-rates but also HDR; nothing is changed—the display must feature HDR on top of meeting the new requirements for FreeSync Premium. The story is different for notebook displays. For the base FreeSync tier, a refresh-rate of 40-60 Hz will do; and for FreeSync Premium, you need at least 120 Hz. HDR on top of this gives you FreeSync Premium Pro. All displays will need FreeSync hardware support (which essentially builds on top of VESA Adaptive Sync).

Retailer specific discounts are creating quite the pileup of graphics card options between the $300 to $500 mark. With enough time spent finding the right deal, you could potentially buy a much faster graphics card that you'd planned for, at a given price. Hot on the heels on a recent Best Buy deal that brought the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 8 GB down to $344, or within just $15 of the Radeon RX 7600 XT, we're hearing about a couple of Newegg deals that see the Radeon RX 7700 XT down to just $353, or $9 more than the RTX 4060 Ti, and $24 more than an RX 7600 XT.

At $353, the RX 7700 XT changes the game, as it is a firmly 1440p-class GPU, compared to the 1080p-class RTX 4060 Ti and RX 7600 XT. In our testing, the Radeon RX 7700 XT is an incredible 17% faster than the RTX 4060 Ti at 1080p for just $9 more; and 19% faster than it at 1440p. Compared to the RX 7600 XT, the RX 7700 XT is a staggering 39% faster at 1080p, and 44% faster at 1440p. Even with ray tracing enabled, the RX 7700 XT dominates the RTX 4060 Ti. At 1080p with ray tracing enabled, the RTX 4060 Ti averages just 2% faster than the RX 7700 XT, but at 1440p, the RX 7700 XT in fact ends up 14% faster than the RTX 4060 Ti thanks to its much heavier SIMD engine, and 50% higher memory bandwidth. The Newegg deal doesn't even cover a cheap custom design, but the mighty PowerColor RX 7700 XT Hellhound and Fighter.

Continuing on with the YEYIAN CES tour, we were shown the company's in-house gaming monitors, and pre-built gaming PCs. There were no empty cases or cases that you can purchase separately in YEYIAN's lineup as such; some of these case feature unique design elements; but you're supposed to choose it along with pre-built gaming hardware. YEYIAN offers the full range of systems integration, letting you choose from the company's in-house and external brands; which are then built to order. On eof the pre-builts shown had an Intel Core i7-14700K, paired with an OEM-favorite ASUS Prime Z790-P, and a ROG Strix RTX 4090 graphics card, all combined with YEYIAN's in-house case, power, and cooling hardware. The company's monitor lineup shown at CES begins with 25-inch Proact series Fast IPS displays that blaze Full HD (1080p) at 360 Hz with 1 ms GTG response time. Next up is the 27-inch Palette series; a premium OLED monitor with QHD (1440p) resolution, fast 240 Hz refresh rate, 0.1 ms response time, and 800 nits brightness. The monitor requires DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.1 connection to provide its specs.

NAS major Synology showcased its latest consumer NAS, personal cloud, and surveillance solutions at the 2024 International CES. Starting things off are the company's latest TC500 and BC500 high-resolution wired cameras; and the CC400W wireless cameras, enhanced with AI. This may sound nebulous, but upon detecting movement, the cameras automatically move to zoom in on faces or vehicle license plates, and automatically dial up video resolution and probably bitrate (image quality). The wired cameras come with 5 MP sensors, while the wireless ones have 4 MP (capable of 1440p @ 30 FPS). Each of these comes with a dark light that can illuminate up to 30 m. They also come with microSD slots, to in the event of network failures, recording continues onto a memory card. You don't need a Synology Surveillance Station device license to use these.

Moving on to the stuff Synology is best known for, NAS, and we have the upgraded DiskStation DS1823xs+, an 8-bay business grade NAS with a combined RW throughput of 3100 MB/s reads, with 2600 MB/s writes; over 173,000 IOPS random reads, and over 80,800 IOPS random writes. The main networking interface is a 10 GbE, but with an additional PCIe Gen 3 x4 slot to drop in more NICs. The NAS can pair with DX517 expansion units over USB 3.1 to scale up to 18 drives. The DS423+ is a compact 4-bay NAS powered by a Celeron J4125 quad-core CPU, 2 GB of RAM, and room for two M.2-2280 NVMe SSDs besides the four 3.5-inch HDDs. The maximum rated throughput is still around 226 MB/s, but the main networking interfaces are two 10 GbE. The DS224+ is nearly the same device, but with just two 3.5-inch bays, and two 2.5 GbE interfaces.

AMD announced the new Radeon RX 7600 XT graphics card, bolstering its mid-range of 1080p class GPUs. The RX 7600 XT is designed for maxed out AAA gaming at 1080p, although it is very much possibly to play many of the titles at 1440p with fairly high settings. You can also take advantage of technologies such as FSR 3 frame generation in games that support it, AMD Fluid Motion Frames on nearly all DirectX 12 and DirectX 11 games; as well as the new expanded AMD HyperRX performance enhancement that engages a host of AMD innovations such as Radeon Super Resolution, Anti-Lag, and Radeon Boost, to achieve a target frame rate.

The Radeon RX 7600 XT is based on the same 6 nm "Navi 33" silicon, and the latest RDNA 3 graphics architecture, as the Radeon RX 7600. If you recall, the RX 7600 had maxed out all 32 CU on the silicon. To design the RX 7600 XT, AMD retained the "Navi 33," but doubled the memory size to 16 GB, and increased the clock speeds. The 16 GB of memory is deployed across the same 128-bit wide memory bus as the 8 GB is on the RX 7600. The memory speed is unchanged, too, at 18 Gbps GDDR6-effective; as is the resulting memory bandwidth, of 288 GB/s. There are two key changes—the GPU clock speeds and power limits.

The Aspire Vero 16 is the latest from its Vero product line, powered by the new Intel Core Ultra processors with Intel AI Boost and Wi-Fi 7 compatibility. Acer has committed to carbon neutrality for the Aspire Vero 16, following international standards for carbon footprint calculation and carbon neutrality. Actions are taken at each stage of the device lifecycle to minimize its carbon footprint, and then, high-quality carbon credits will be applied to attain carbon neutrality. The Intel Evo Edition laptop has increased the usage of post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials on the chassis, doubling that of the 2021 model, to combine eco-innovation and premium PC experiences on the device.
