Xbox Handheld Confirmed To Join Mobile Gaming Fray — Don't Hold Your Breath, Though

Microsoft has long been rumored to be working on a gaming handheld to compete with the likes of Valve's Steam Deck and the ASUS ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go, but all we've had to go on until now is unfounded rumors and leaks. Now, Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft Gaming, has confirmed that the software giant is actively working on a Steam Deck challenger, although details are scant, and the timeline is unclear at best.

In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Spencer confirmed that Microsoft is working on an Xbox handheld, although he was very careful to not overpromise or provide any firm release dates, going so far as to confirm that an Xbox handheld is still years away from release. Spencer reiterated in the review that Microsoft was still looking to grow its presence in the gaming industry, which is one of the company's motivations for getting into the gaming handheld market, in the first place. He also confirmed that Microsoft will be pursuing further mergers and acquisitions in the future as part of its gaming push—a move that might not be looked upon favorably by many gamers and regulatory bodies.

ASUS Motherboard Manual Shows 3D V-Cache Coming to Threadripper

Just last week, AMD announced the arrival of its upcoming Ryzen 9000 series of CPUs with 3D V-Cache for November 7. However, we might be in for a treat, as AMD could be preparing Threadripper 9000WX/X series of CPUs with 3D V-Cache. According to VideoCardz, the ASUS Pro WS WRX90E-SAGE SE board appears to include an intriguing feature in its settings—there's a configuration option related to 3D V-Cache control, though this setting currently doesn't have any practical application with the available Threadripper 7000WX and 7000X processors. The presence of this setting hasn't been officially documented by ASUS, showing that this feature could indeed end up in future iterations of Threadripper processors, namely the 9000WX/X series.

AMD currently offers 3D V-Cache treatment in its high-end Genoa-X CPUs, with up to 96 cores and 192 threads, and 1,152 MB of L3 cache. These CPUs were praised for their capabilities in the high-performance computing sector, performing calculations at unprecedented rates thanks to the massive cache size and bandwidth. If AMD decides to opt-in for the HEDT market with 3D V-Cache, we might see an appearance with the upcoming Threadripper generation. However, right now, it is only speculation based on undocumented features in ASUS's high-end board. Even if these CPUs are planned, we are not near their launch as the priority is launching and shipping the consumer-oriented Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU on November 7.

ASUS Intros Radeon RX 7600 DUAL EVO OC Graphics Card

ASUS over the weekend introduced its third custom-design AMD Radeon RX 7600 graphics card, the RX 7600 DUAL EVO OC. This card is visually the largest, most spruced-up custom-design for this GPU from the company's DUAL series. It's positioned a notch below the premium ROG Strix RX 7600 OC, which remains the only ROG branded graphics card based on the RX 7000 series. The DUAL EVO OC is 22.9 cm in length, and 12.3 cm in height, and is 2.5 slots thick. Its cooling solution features an aluminium fin-stack heatsink, which is ventilated by a pair of 80 mm Axial-Tech fans. The cooler offers idle fan-stop.

Out of the box, the ASUS RX 7600 DUAL EVO OC comes with a 2280 MHz Game clock, and 2695 MHz maximum boost frequency, compared to AMD reference clock speeds of 2250 MHz Game clocks and 2655 MHz boost. The card draws power from a single 8-pin PCIe power connector, and puts out display outputs that include three DisplayPort 1.4a, and one HDMI 2.1. Based on the 6 nm "Navi 33" silicon and driven by the RDNA 3 graphics architecture, the RX 7600 features 2,048 stream processors across 32 CU, along with 64 AI accelerators, and 32 ray accelerators. It comes with 8 GB of 18 Gbps GDDR6 memory across a 128-bit wide memory bus. ASUS didn't reveal pricing.

Valve Releases SteamOS 3.6.19 with More Optimizations and Further Hints of SteamOS for Third-Party Handhelds

Valve has rolled out a significant system update for Steam Deck, introducing substantial improvements across all models while delivering specialized enhancements for the OLED variant. The v3.6.19 update focuses on system stability, display quality, and overall performance optimization. Steam Deck OLED owners will particularly benefit from this update, which includes several display-specific improvements, including better color balance at low brightness levels and enhanced display uniformity. A previous memory leak issue affecting OLED units during gameplay has also been resolved, ensuring more stable long-term gaming sessions. As Intel's Core Ultra "Arrow Lake-S" desktop processors near their launch, ASUS China put out a video presentation about its Z890 chipset motherboards ready for these processors, which included a technical run-down of Intel's first tile-based desktop processor, which included detailed die-shots of the various tiles. This is stuff that would require not just de-lidding the processor (removing the integrated heat-spreader), but also clearing up the top layers of the die to reveal the various components underneath.

The whole-chip die-shot gives us a bird's eye view of the four key logic tiles—Compute, Graphics, SoC, and I/O, sitting on top of the Foveros base tile. Our article from earlier this week goes into the die areas of the individual tiles, and the base tile. The Compute tile is built on the most advanced foundry node among the four tiles, the 3 nm TSMC N3B. Unlike the older generation "Raptor Lake-S" and "Alder Lake-S," the P-cores and E-core clusters aren't clumped into the two ends of the CPU complex. In "Arrow Lake-S," they follow a staggered layout, with a row of P-cores, followed by a row of E-core clusters, followed by two rows of P-cores, and then another row of E-core clusters, before the final row of P-cores, to achieve the total core-count of 8P+16E. This arrangement reduces concentration of heat when the P-cores are loaded (eg: when gaming), and ensures each E-core cluster is just one ringbus stop away from a P-core, which should improve thread-migration latencies. The central region of the tile has this ringbus, and 36 MB of L3 cache shared among the P-cores and E-core clusters.

ASUS Also Launches Thunderbolt 5 Add-in Card

Hot on the heels of Gigabyte, ASUS has also put its Thunderbolt 5 card up on its website, although there are some differences between the two. Obviously the physical appearance differs somewhat, but that's largely cosmetic. However, the one key difference is that the ASUS ThunderboltEX 5 only sports a single 6-pin PCIe power connector. ASUS still claims USB PD support of up to 130 W—a feature the company calls Flexible FastCharge—however, a single USB Type-C port is limited to a maximum of 96 W, which means you can charge your MacBook Pro at full tilt, but not some other laptops. Admittedly the 4 W discrepancy compared to the Gigabyte card is fairly minor, but the second port gets left with only 34 W, although that's still enough for charging most phones. Oddly enough, ASUS ThunderboltEX 4 card, allowed for up to 100 W on a single port.

ASUS has also implemented a single Thunderbolt 5 pin-header for the GPIO, SPI I2C and UART interfaces, plus a standard USB 2.0 header, for adding USB 2.0 support to the Thunderbolt 5 ports. Just as with the Gigabyte card, we find Intel's JHL9580 Thunderbolt 5 controller at the heart of the card and once again it uses a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface and supports up to three DP 2.1 8K displays at 60 Hz, although ASUS mentions that this requires DSC. The card features three mini DP inputs and comes with three DP to mini DP adapters, as well as the two aforementioned USB Type-C ports. Note that if you use tree displays, you can only use two Thunderbolt devices with the card. ASUS only mentions Windows 11 64-bit support, so it looks like Windows 10 won't be getting a driver and so far it would seem neither is Linux.

OLED Monitor Shipments to Reach 1.44 Million Units in 2024, Marking 181% YoY Growth

TrendForce reports that the OLED monitor market is set to receive a boost with the introduction of new 31.5-inch OLED models. Panel makers are focusing on product differentiation and improved specifications, while several gaming brands are aggressively launching new models to capture market share. OLED monitor shipments are projected to reach 1.44 million units in 2024—representing YoY growth of 181%—with strong growth expected to continue in the coming years.

Samsung is expected to secure the top spot owing to strong sales of its 49-inch OLED monitors and a steady pipeline of new product releases. Its 2024 market share is forecast to expand to 31%. LGE, leveraging ample panel resources and continuous product line expansion, is poised to take second place with a projected 19% market share.
