GIGABYTE GTX 680 SuperOverclock WindForce 5X Pictured Some More

Unveiled earlier this month, GIGABYTE's GeForce GTX 680 SuperOverclock has been an attention magnet thanks to its WindForce 5X cooling solution, which you'll either love or hate. Coolaler.com got to spend some time with this card, more importantly, to dissemble it. The cooler is found to occupy 3 expansion slots in your system, which isn't exactly new, no thanks to ASUS and its DirectCu II solution. The entire volume of card's cooling area is occupied by a gigantic heatsink.

At the base of WindForce 5X cooling solution is a vapor-chamber plate, which draws heat from the GPU and memory chips. This plate makes contact with five 8 mm-thick copper heat-pipes. These pipes pass through the gargantuan heatsink in a closed loop. There are five 40 mm fans arranged on top of the card to ventilate the heatsink. These fans occupy extra space on the top-side of the card, since as we mentioned, almost the entire volume of the cooler's space is occupied by the heatsink. The back side of the card was also shown, fitted with a back-plate, with as many as four NEC Tokin proadlizers peeking out of a cutout. Other components on the back side are hard to make out.

Find the latest version of TweakLauncher at the software downloads section of 7-series chipset motherboards' product pages, on GIGABYTE website (eg: for G1.Sniper M3).

"Hackintoshing" Easiest with GIGABYTE 3D UEFI BIOS

Hackintosh (running Apple OS X on a non-Apple PC) interest group tonymacx86 discovered that GIGABYTE's 3D UEFI BIOS is most trouble-free with hackintoshing, leaving you with no risky BIOS modding to do. The BIOS tells OS X about what the hardware environment is like. If the OS doesn't have an environment that it's designed for, it crashes with a kernel panic.

GIGABYTE 3D UEFI BIOS, tonymacx86 reports, as tested on a GA-Z77-DS3H, already has power-management descriptors, so you don't have to add any power-management DSDT tables for sleep/wake or power-management functions. Most other onboard devices on the Z77-DS3H run seamlessly with Apple's native drivers. The Atheros gigabit Ethernet controller works with MultiBeast driver, Realtek ALC887 HDA codec works with ALC8xxHDA/AppleHDA, and Intel HD 3000 graphics embedded into the Core i5-2500K (used in the testing) works just fine.

GIGABYTE AIVIA Osmium Gaming Keyboard Detailed

The next big-ticket unveiling by GIGABYTE is a new high-grade gaming keyboard under its AIVIA series, called Osmium. This one of the very few keyboards that come with USB 3.0 SuperSpeed interface. While we really can't imagine the keyboard needing the bandwidth that comes with USB 3.0, it's probably the increased power capacity (up to 900 mA) that the keyboard might need, for its power-hungry LED lighting and core-logic. Another possibility is that the keyboard features a USB 3.0 hub.

The AIVIA Osmium is a mechanical gaming keyboard, which is said to utilize the best switches out there, for gaming. The keyboard supports multiple simultaneous key-presses, which is important in gaming scenarios. Apart from a conventional QWERTY layout, the Osmium features several macro-keys, local storage for macro profiles, and quick cycling through macro-profiles. Two scroll-wheels give you analog control over illumination brightness, and volume. The keyboard is illuminated blue, and features a large palm-rest. More details are awaited.

It features a multi-macro button layout that's symmetrical. We spy six six macro buttons apart from the three top primary buttons, a scroll-wheel, and function buttons that adjust tracking resolution on the fly, and switch between macro profiles.

The main USPs of Krypton, apart from its ambidextrous design, are a very high tracking resolution (exact figure not known); a "gliding feet" design that suspends the mouse slightly higher, with lower surface contact, to reduce friction; and of course adjustable weight. More details are awaited.

GIGABYTE WindForce 5X Cooling Solution on GTX 680 SOC Pictured - 5 Fan Mayhem

Here are the first pictures of GIGABYTE's new WindForce 5X graphics card cooling solution, which will likely feature on its upcoming GeForce GTX 680 SuperOverclock graphics card. It turns out that the "5X" in its name indeed denotes the presence of five fans. It's the arrangement of the fans that is its defining feature. While most graphics cards have their fan(s) arranged along the plane of the PCB, on the obverse side of the card, the WindForce 5X cooler has five 40 mm fans (the ones usually featured in rack servers) arranged perpendicular to the plane of the PCB, on the top side of the card.

This unique arrangement of fans ensures that hot air from the heatsinks are ventilated in a single direction and not all over the card (like with WindForce 3X), heating other components on the motherboard. The front-side of the card has just a swanky-looking molded brushed aluminum shroud. On the flip-side, the card spans across three expansion slots, and appears to be both taller and longer than reference design. GIGABYTE's GeForce GTX 680, featuring this cooling solution, and aggressive clock speeds, will be launched very soon.
