AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT Scores Top Spot in 3DMark Fire Strike Hall of Fame with 3.1 GHz Overclock

3DMark Fire Strike Hall of Fame is where overclockers submit their best hardware benchmark trials and try to beat the very best. For years, one record managed to hold, and today it just got defeated. According to an extreme overclocker called "biso biso" from South Korea and a part of the EVGA OC team, the top spot now belongs to the AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics card. The previous 3DMark Fire Strike world record was set on April 22nd in 2020, when Vince Lucido, also known as K|NGP|N, set a record with four-way SLI of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti GPUs. However, that record is old news since January 27th, when biso biso set the history with AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT GPU.

The overclocker scored 62389 points, just 1,183 more from the previous record. He pushed the Navi 21 XTX silicon that powers the Radeon RX 6900 XT card to an impressive 3,147 MHz. Paired with a GPU memory clock of 2370 MHz, the GPU was probably LN2 cooled to achieve these results. The overclocker used EVGA's Z690 DARK KINGPIN motherboard with Intel Core i9-12900K processor as a platform of choice to achieve this record. GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Supply is Reportedly Dwindling, Prices on the Rise

Multiple sources confirmed to GamersNexus that the GTX 1080 Ti is starting to be really difficult to find. Supplies are decreasing and the reason seems to be clear: NVIDIA could have stopped the production of those graphics cards. This has had an immediate effect on these cards' prices, which in the last few days have increased everywhere in the world. The performance differences with the new GeForce RTX 2080 are not that important if you don't need the RT part of the equation -we could confirm this on our own review-, but the price of these new graphics card have made considering a 1080 Ti a viable option for many users that are looking to upgrade their systems.

Prices for the RTX 2080 start at $769 at Newegg for example, while the cheapest GTX 1080 Ti costs $850 there. The story is the same at Amazon, where we can find the cheapest RTX 2080 at $799,99 versus the $878.12 for a used model of the GTX 1080 Ti. The high-end model of the Pascal series competes directly with the RTX 2080 and was cheaper not long ago, but that's not the story now. With prices climbing, some are claiming the same will happen to the GTX 1080, GTX 1070 or GTX 1070 Ti in the next few weeks. Reports of RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti inexplicably dying on users could also be fueling consumer-fear, as well as a [temporary] erosion in the value proposition of the RTX 20-series itself, as Microsoft pulled Windows 10 1809 Update, leaving fewer people with DirectX Ray-tracing, the software foundation for RTX.

Intel Core i9-9900K 3DMark Numbers Emerge: Beats Ryzen 7 2700X

Some of the first benchmark numbers of Intel's upcoming 8-core/16-thread socket LGA1151 processor, the Core i9-9900K, surfaced, from Thai professional overclocker TUM APISAK. A 3DMark database submission sees the processor score 10,719 points in the CPU tests, with an overall score of 9,862 points, when paired with a GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card. According to WCCFTech, the CPU score is about 2,500 points higher than the 6-core/12-thread Core i7-8700K, and about 1,500 points higher than the 8-core/16-thread AMD Ryzen 7 2700X. The tested processor features 8 cores, 16 threads, a nominal clock of 3.10 GHz, and boost frequency of 5.00 GHz, as measured by 3DMark's internal SysInfo module. Intel is expected to launch the Core i9-9900K on 1st August, 2018.

EVGA Intros GeForce GTX 1080 Ti SC2 Elite in Two New Color Variants

EVGA today introduced two new color variants of its GeForce GTX 1080 Ti SC2 Elite Gaming graphics card. These include the Green (model: 11G-P4-6693-K4), and blue (11G-P4-6693-K3). EVGA colored the aluminium frame-type cooler shroud with anodized blue or green paint. That's all there is to these variants, which are priced on par with the regular model that has a silver shroud color. The factory-overclocked cards ship with clock speeds of 1556 MHz base, 1670 MHz GPU Boost, and an untouched 11 GHz (GDDR5X-effective) memory. Both new variants are priced the same, at USD $949.99, on EVGA web-store.

NVIDIA Bracing for a Cryptocurrency Demand Drop

In what could bring cheers to PC gamers, and tears to miners, NVIDIA is reportedly wary of a possible drop in cryptocurrencies through 2018. This directly affects the company, since GPUs are used in mining various cryptocurrencies, which triggered inflation in prices of graphics cards from Q2-2017 to Q1-2018. Over the past couple of weeks, prices of popular high-end GPUs such as the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti have cooled, although not back to their original levels. NVIDIA's manufacturing division, which sub-contracts silicon fabrication to TSMC, is calculating the impact a cryptocurrency slump could have on its supply-chain, and are being conservative with their orders to the foundry. A drop in demand could leave the company with vast amounts of unsold inventories based on an old-generation architecture (Pascal, in the wake of Volta/Ampere), which could result in multi-billion-dollar inventory write-offs. According to a Digitimes report, NVIDIA has placed restrictions on its add-in card (AIC) partners on marketing cryptocurrency mining abilities of their graphics cards, and selling directly to large miners.

In addition to a slump in demand for cryptocurrencies, 2018 could see introduction of purpose-built crypto-mining ASICs that are tailored for popular cryptocurrencies. Purpose-built ASICs tend to be extremely economical for medium-thru-large scale miners, in comparison to GPUs. The third horseman is policy. While several governments around the world have developed an appreciation for blockchain technology for its resilience to tampering, fraud, and data-theft (which could be implemented in safekeeping government- and bank-records); governments are, understandably, anti-cryptocurrency, as it undermines sovereign legal tender issued by central banks, and aids tax-evasion. Several governments through 2017-18 have announced measures to crack down on cryptocurrency mining and use as tender. This has led to a further drop in public interest in cryptocurrencies, as large ICO investors are weary of losing money in a highly volatile market. Close to half the ICOs have failed.

Lesson from the Crypto/DRAM Plagues: Build Future-Proof

As someone who does not mine crypto-currency, loves fast computers, and gaming on them, I find the current crypto-currency mining craze using graphics cards nothing short of a plague. It's like war broke out, and your government took away all the things you love from the market. All difficult times teach valuable lessons, and in this case, it is "Save up and build future-proof."

When NVIDIA launched its "Pascal" GPU architecture way back in Summer 2016, and AMD followed up, as a user of 2x GeForce GTX 970 SLI, I did not feel the need to upgrade anything, and planned to skip the Pascal/Polaris/Vega generation, and only upgrade when "Volta" or "Navi" offered something interesting. My pair of GTX 970 cards are backed by a Core i7-4770K processor, and 16 GB of dual-channel DDR3-1866 memory, both of which were considered high-end when I bought them, around 2014-15.

Throughout 2016, my GTX 970 pair ate AAA titles for breakfast. With NVIDIA investing on advancing SLI with the new SLI-HB, and DirectX 12 promising a mixed multi-GPU utopia, I had calculated a rather rosy future for my cards (at least to the point where NVIDIA would keep adding SLI profiles for newer games for my cards to chew through). What I didn't see coming was the inflection point between the decline of multi-GPU and crypto-plague eating away availability of high-end graphics cards at sane prices. That is where we are today.

ELSA Releases GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB ST Graphics Card

ELSA 's appearances in TechPowerUp's front pages have been few and far between, with the last iteration of a graphics card from this manufacturer having made its way into our news feed around February 5th, 2015, with its GTX 960 SAC graphics card. That doesn't mean they ELSA isn't worthy of our attention, though, so here goes: the announcement of a GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card.

The ELSA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11 GB ST graphics card features a stock blower design that's reminiscent of those offered in AMD's base models, with a subdued black and silver color scheme. It's a pretty graphics card, though it will likely be let down by its cooling and acoustic performance. Specs are vanilla when it comes to NVIDIA's reference GTX 1080 Ti clocks: there's a base clock of 1,480 MHz (actually 1 MHz lower than NVIDIA's reference) and 1,582 MHz Boost, with 11 GB of 11 GHz GDDR5X memory. The ELSA GTX 1080 Ti 11GB ST graphics card draws power from the PCIe bus, and from 1x 6-pin and 1x 8-pin connectors. Display outputs on this dual-slot graphics card come in at 3x DisplayPort, 1x Dual link DVI-D, and 1x HDMI 2.0b. The card's dimensions stand at 266 mm (L) x 111 mm (H) x 39 mm (D).

ASUS Quietly Revises ROG Strix 1080 Ti PCB Design, EKWB Warns

ASUS has seemingly revised the PCB design of their ROG Strix GTX 1080 Ti graphics card in such a way that it has introduced compatibility issues with already-released custom waterblocks. The warning from Ek WaterBlocks (a silent one as well) comes via an update to their EK-MLC Phoenix GPU Module FC1080 GTX Ti, and EK-FC1080 GTX Ti waterblock modules product pages, where EK wrote that "Due to changes in the PCB design, ASUS ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics cards in the following S/N range are not compatible with EK-FC1080 GTX Ti Strix full cover water blocks: HBYVCM064817- HBYVCM999999; HCYVCM000001- HCYVCM059975".

Product revisions are a dime a dozen (particularly in motherboards). However, it's relatively rare that changes are enough to render cooling solutions completely incompatible with the new design. Granted, ASUS saw something worth some additional engineering, and went on to do it, so users looking towards the acquisition of a new GPU waterblock for their ASUS ROG Strix GTX 1080 Ti graphics card should just look closely to the serial numbers on their graphics card packaging. Based on the range of serial numbers, graphics cards manufactured on or after November 2017 are the ones rendered incompatible with EKWB's purpose-built GPU waterblocks, so users purchasing graphics cards after this time-frame should take particular heed.

GIGABYTE, which had two variants of its flagship GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card, the air-cooled Aorus GTX 1080 Ti Xtreme Edition, and the WaterForce WB Xtreme Edition, that comes with a factory-fitted full-coverage water-block; introduced a third variant, the WaterForce Xtreme Edition. Unlike the WaterForce WB Xtreme Edition, which you plumb to your own water-cooling loop, this card comes with a self-contained AIO liquid-cooling loop. GIGABYTE launched a variant of its flagship Aorus GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Xtreme Edition graphics card, which is prepped for water-cooling. The new Aorus GTX 1080 Ti Waterforce WB Xtreme Edition comes with a factory-fitted full-coverage water-block, which you plumb to your water-cooling loop. The block is made of nickel-plated copper, with a clear acrylic top, and an aluminium+plastic top-plate with a cutout the shape of the Aorus logo. The acrylic top is studded with RGB multi-color LEDs, which can be controlled using GIGABYTE RGB Fusion software.
