NEC Also Working on Curved Monitor

Looks like Alienware isn't the only company with a curved monitor in the works. NEC has now announced its own 42" curved display, which will feature a resolution of 2880x900 pixels and a response time of under 0.02ms - pretty much identical to the Alienware specs, although an NEC spokeswoman said the two "have nothing to do with each other." NEC's offering will have a contrast ratio of 10,000:1 and uses LED-backlit DLP rear projection, just like the Alienware one. As you can see, there are clearly visible seams, although these should be gone when the display goes on sale.

NEC Develops World's Fastest SRAM-Compatible MRAM With Operation Speed of 250MHz

NEC Corporation today announced that it has succeeded in developing a new SRAM (Static Random Access Memory) - compatible MRAM that can operate at 250MHz, the world's fastest MRAM (Magnetoresistive Random Access Memory) operation speed. MRAM is expected to be the dominant next-generation memory technology as it realizes ultra fast operation speeds, nonvolatility - ability to retain data with the power off, and unlimited write endurance. Verification at the SRAM speed level proves that the newly-developed MRAM could be embedded in system LSIs as SRAM substitutes in the future.

NEC Introduces 40nm Embedded DRAM

NEC Electronics Corporation today introduced two new technologies for the manufacture of 40-nanometer (nm) system-on-chip (SoC) devices with embedded dynamic random access memory (eDRAM). The UX8GD eDRAM technology boasts clock speeds up to 800 megahertz and low operating power, making it optimal for use in consumer electronics products such as digital video cameras and game consoles. The UX8LD eDRAM technology features low leakage-current levels that reduce power consumption by as much two-thirds compared to equivalent SRAM, making it ideal for use in mobile handsets and other portable devices that require low standby power.

NEC VersaPro VC VY10A C-4 Laptop Works 14.5 Hours Without Recharge

NEC's latest VersaPro UltraLite Type VC looks like an ordinary laptop, but NEC claims that this 12.1-inch ultraportable laptop can last 14.5-hours without recharging. It comes with an Intel Core 2 Duo U7500 ultra low voltage (ULV) processor, 1GB RAM, 40GB hard drive, Microsoft Windows Vista or XP Professional OS, all this in a 217x268x27mm body that weighs only 958 grams. Moreover, the "Secure Redirector" from NEC guarantees that nobody will have access to your files.

USB 3.0 Proposed

Intel has announced the formation of the USB 3.0 promoters group, a consortium that aims to create a "super speed personal USB interconnect."

The first members of the promoter group (HP, Intel, Microsoft, NEC Corporation, NXP Semiconductors and Texas Instruments) said that USB 3.0 will deliver more than ten times the data transfer bandwidth of USB 2.0, which tops out at 480 Mb/s. The new interface will be designed to be used in consumer electronics and mobile applications and able to deal with digital media file sizes that are likely to exceed 25 GB.

Intel stated that USB 3.0 will be based on current USB technology and ports and cabling will be backwards compatible; however version 3.0 will offer enhancements for better protocol efficiency and lower power consumption. The development group will also integrate an upgrade path to optical capabilities for USB. A completed USB 3.0 specification is expected to be released in the first half of 2008.

The 26-inch model has a 92% color gamut. Both monitors have HDCP, which is supported through the DVI-D connector.

NEC Desktops catching fire

2006 was a bad year for Sony with their exploding notebook batteries, but now NEC has managed to join the list of dangerous computers with desktops which catch alight. NEC says that a part of the power supply unit, supplied to them by an unnamed external manufacturer (does Sony make PSUs for them?), was the culprit for two overheating computers leading to fires. The desktop model affected is the Valuestar model, built between November 2003 and June 2004.
