NVIDIA Announces Half-Life 2 RTX, an RTX Remix Community Project

NVIDIA RTX Remix Community is a group of game developers remastering popular games from the past. "Quake II RTX" and "Portal with RTX" were extremely well received, and the community now turned its sights to a cult classic—Half-Life 2. When it came out in 2004 (that's 19 years ago!), Half-Life 2 already set standards for realism, and invented several new gameplay mechanics. It is believed to have edged past "Doom 3" in art direction and production quality for the time; and now the RTX Remix Community is inviting game modders to join the effort at this page.

Four of HL2's top modding teams, known as Orbfold Studios, is leading the effort within the community, at remastering the entire game—an effort on a much larger scale than "Portal." The remaster will include full ray tracing effects, support for DLSS 3 Frame Generation, RTX-IO, and modernized assets (higher resolution textures, higher poly-count models, with support for modern surfaces and geometry. The teaser from NVIDIA includes a picture of the HEV Suit from the game, and a scene from the game showing just how much more advanced the game is shaping up to be! The company didn't announce any timeline to go with Half-Life 2 RTX, since it is still in development.

Portal: Prelude RTX Available Today

Portal remains a timeless classic; in December we released Portal with RTX, a fully ray-traced reimagining of Valve's award winning game, which used the performance multiplication of NVIDIA DLSS 3 to power the most realistic path-traced lighting ever seen in a real-time game. NVIDIA RTX IO GPU-Accelerated Storage Technology Debuts This Month

Rapid loading and smooth navigation through endless open worlds has long been a goal of gamers and developers alike. Even with the incredible performance of NVMe SSDs, this goal has remained out of reach. Modern game engines have exceeded the capability of traditional storage APIs; a new generation of Input/Output (IO) architecture is needed.

Enter NVIDIA RTX IO, enabling fast GPU-based loading and game asset decompression, massively accelerating IO performance compared to hard drives and traditional storage APIs. NVIDIA RTX IO leverages GPU decompression for smaller data packages, enabling faster load times and lower CPU utilization, allowing developers to create a new generation of games with massive, highly detailed worlds. NVIDIA RTX IO makes its debut alongside the free Portal: Prelude RTX mod today, and will also feature in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, launching July 26th.

Half Life 2 Path Tracing Mod Highly Praised for Adding Extra Visual Flair

A Half Life 2 modder, Igor Zdrowowicz, has managed to integrate path tracing into the game - with striking results, even at an early stage in development. His project - codenamed "HL2RTX" - has been in-progress for a handful of months, and the modder has managed to integrate a ray tracing system into Valve's classic shooter (sort of) via NVIDIA's RTX Remix SDK. That package has become open source only very recently, so Zdrowowicz stated that a Portal RTX-derived binary was the tool of choice.

NVIDIA's Lightspeed Studios has already created an impressive RTX conversion of Valve's fan favorite puzzle-platform game Portal (2007), and modders have been poring over the underlying technology and update technique processes. A number of old favorites, running on past iterations of the Source Engine (DirectX 8 and 9), are getting the amateur mod community sprucing up treatment. It is posited that Zdrowowicz will have an easier time with his current conversion project, thanks to an official release of NVIDIA's RTX Remix toolkit (albeit in early access).
