AMD today announced the signing of a definitive agreement to acquire Nod.ai to expand the company's open AI software capabilities. Intel's next-generation Lunar Lake processor has appeared in the SiSoftware Sandra benchmarking suite, and the online database has revealed many details, thanks to a spotting by @Olrak29 of X/Twitter. Considering Intel's Meteor Lake is still two months away from its launch, the presence of Lunar Lake's benchmarks is indeed intriguing. Interestingly, Intel showcased a Lunar Lake laptop at the Intel Innovation 2023 event, and this SiSoft entry might be related to that demo. The data from SiSoft details the system as a "Genuine Inte l(R) 0000 1.00 GHz (5M 20c 3.91 GHz + 2.61 GHz, 3.3 GHz IMC, 4x 2.5 MB + 4 MB L2, 2x 8 MB L3)," hinting at a "Lunar Lake Client System (Intel LNL-M LP5 RVP1)." Deciphering these details, the Lunar Lake system adopts a 4+4 core configuration, utilizing a mix of Lion Cove and Skymont architecture cores tailored for performance and efficiency.

Moreover, the benchmark report pegs this CPU as a low-power laptop variant with a 17 W TDP. While it operates at a 1.0 GHz base frequency, it reached a speed of 3.91 GHz during the testing. However, these numbers should be taken cautiously since it's likely an engineering sample. Cache details are outlined, suggesting a 2.5 MB L2 cache per P-core, an added 4 MB L2 cache for E-cores, and a 16 MB L3 cache. No details on the integrated GPU were revealed, although it's anticipated that Lunar Lake will house Intel's Xe2-LPG graphics and LPDDR5 system memory. Intel has shared that Lunar Lake is scheduled for a 2024 release in mobile/laptop devices, targeting performance-per-watt leadership. Arrow Lake processors, catering to desktops, might share the core architecture and are anticipated to launch around the same timeframe.

AMD today released the latest version of the AMD Software Adrenalin drivers. Version 23.9.3 WHQL comes with optimization for "Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty," and "PAYDAY 3." The drivers also add optimization for generative AI tools MeanVarianceNormalization (MVN) and Stable Diffusion variants. With this release, the company didn't include any fixes, but identified a handful new issues.

Adrenalin 23.9.3 WHQL, along with its preceding 23.9.2 WHQL, see AMD release separate installers for RDNA-only and RDNA + pre-RDNA GPUs, both with the same release notes. The RDNA release supports only Radeon RX 5000 series, RX 6000 series, and RX 7000 series; while the RDNA + pre-RDNA combo release is meant for Radeon RX Vega series, RX 500 series, and RX 400 series (Polaris) on top of the RX 5000 (or later) GPUs. The RDNA-only release is 640 MB in size, while the RDNA + pre-RDNA combo package is 1.2 GB.

AMD has released the latest version of the Adrenalin software, the version 23.9.1 WHQL. The new AMD Software Adrenalin Edition 23.9.1 WHQL adds support for Radeon RX 7700 and RX 7800 series graphics cards which will be available as of today, as well as adds support for AMD Radeon Anti-Lag, Radeon Boost, and AMD HYPR-RX features.

The AMD Radeon Anti-Lag+ initially supports 12 games, including Apex Legends, Overwatch 2, Dying Light 2, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Resident Evil 4, Ghostwire: Tokyo, Fortnite, Last of Us: Part 1, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Resident Evil 3, and Borderlands 3, with more promised in the coming months. The tool allows developers to retrieve and analyze AMD GPU crash dumps and produce information that can help narrow down the search for a crash's root cause. Such information includes page fault details, resource details and execution markers reflecting the GPU work that was in progress at the moments leading to the crash.

This first version of the tool supports analysis of GPU crashes on Windows ("TDRs") in Direct3D 12 applications and requires a RX 6000 series (RDNA 2) or RX 7000 series (RDNA 3) card, in addition to the latest public AMD Radeon Adrenalin Software.

According to the Linux Kernel Mailing List, AMD started to enable next-generation processors by submitting patches to the Linux kernel. Codenamed Family 1Ah or Family 26 in decimal notation, the set of patches corresponds to the upcoming AMD Zen 5 core, which is the backbone of the upcoming Ryzen 8000 series processors. The patches have a few interesting notes, namely few of them being: added support for the amd64_edac (Error Detection and Correction) module and temperature monitoring; added PCI IDs for these models covering 00h-1Fh and 20h; added required support in k10temp driver.

The AMD EDAC driver also points out that the Zen 5 server CPUs will max out with 12-channel memory. Codenames 0-31 correspond to next-generation EPYC, while 40 to 79 are desktop and laptop SKUS. Interestingly, these patches are just the start, as adding PCI IDs and temperature drivers are basic enablement. With the 2024 launch date nearing, we expect to see more Linux kernel enablement efforts, especially with more complicated parts of the kernel.

Lenovo Group today announced full-year results, reporting Group revenue of US$62 billion and net income of US$1.6 billion, or US$1.9 billion on a non-Hong Kong Financial Reporting Standards (HKFRS) [1] basis. Profitability was stable with gross margin and operating margin both delivering 18-year highs and non-HKFRS net margin flat year-to-year. While Group revenue was impacted due to the softness in the device market, revenue from non-PC businesses reached a fiscal year high of nearly 40%, fueled by Lenovo's diversified growth engines of Solutions and Services Group (SSG) and Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG) growing revenue to record highs of US$6.7 billion and US$9.8 billion respectively, up 22% and 37% year-on-year.

After a year of industry and global uncertainties, Lenovo sees positive signs of the market stabilizing. Alphabet Incorporated's Google AI division has today revealed a planned update for its Bard conversational artificial intelligence chatbot. The experimental generative artificial intelligence software application will become capable of assisting people in the writing of computer code - the American multinational technology company hopes that Bard will be of great to help in the area of software development. Paige Bailey, a group product manager at Google Research has introduced the upcoming changes: "Since we launched Bard, our experiment that lets you collaborate with generative AI, coding has been one of the top requests we've received from our users. As a product lead in Google Research - and a passionate engineer who still programs every day - I'm excited that today we're updating Bard to include that capability."

The Bard chatbot was made available, on a trial basis, to users in the USA and UK last month. Google's AI team is reported to be under great pressure to advance the Bard chatbot into a suitably powerful state in order to compete with its closest rival - Microsoft Corporation. The Seattle-based giant has invested heavily into Open AI's industry leading ChatGPT application. Google's latest volley against its rivals shows that Bard's has become very sophisticated - so much so that the app is able to chew through a variety of programming languages. Bailey outlines these features in the company's latest blog: "Starting now, Bard can help with programming and software development tasks, including code generation, debugging and code explanation. We're launching these capabilities in more than 20 programming languages including C++, Go, Java, Javascript, Python and Typescript. And you can easily export Python code to Google Colab - no copy and paste required." Critics of AI-driven large language models have posited that the technology could potentially eliminate humans from the job market - it will be interesting to observe the coder community's reaction to Google marketing of Bard as a helpful tool in software development.
