VESA Publishes DisplayPort 2.0 Standard, Enabling Support for Beyond-8K & Higher Refresh Rates

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) today announced that it has released version 2.0 of the DisplayPort (DP) audio/video standard. DP 2.0 is the first major update to the DisplayPort standard since March 2016, and provides up to a 3X increase in data bandwidth performance compared to the previous version of DisplayPort (DP 1.4a), as well as new capabilities to address the future performance requirements of traditional displays. These include beyond 8K resolutions, higher refresh rates and high dynamic range (HDR) support at higher resolutions, improved support for multiple display configurations, as well as improved user experience with augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) displays, including support for 4K-and-beyond VR resolutions.

The advantages of DP 2.0 are enjoyed across both the native DP connector as well as the USB Type-C connector, which carries the DP audio/video signal through DisplayPort Alt Mode. DP 2.0 is backward compatible with previous versions of DisplayPort and incorporates all of the key features of DP 1.4a, including support for visually lossless Display Stream Compression (DSC) with Forward Error Correction (FEC), HDR metadata transport, and other advanced features. The increased video bandwidth performance of DP 2.0 carried over the USB-C connector enables simultaneous higher-speed USB data transfer without compromising display performance. DP 2.0 leverages the Thunderbolt 3 physical interface (PHY) layer while maintaining the flexibility of DP protocol in order to boost the data bandwidth and promote convergence across industry-leading IO standards.

Ducky Brings a Flock of New Mechanical Keyboards to Computex

Ducky Channel is one of the oldest mechanical keyboard OEMs and whitebox manufacturers in Taiwan, and brought a vast selection of new mechanical keyboards to Computex 2019, with a focus on space-saving TKL (tenkeyless) and sub-TKL form-factors without compromising on the size of the keycaps. A running design theme at the Ducky booth has been a fusion of the Chinese Year of the Pig in a rendition by Formosan artists (indigenous people of the island of Taiwan). We begin our tour with the Shine, a lineup of full-size 108-key units that now come in the new Gunmetal Grey color option. These keyboards feature a zinc-alloy top, with PBT double-shot seamless keycaps, and another in hot-rod red+black color scheme. You can have the Shine in a number of Cherry MX switch options. The 2019 edition also comes with USB type-C cabling in addition to type-A.

GIGABYTE Unveils Three New X299 Motherboards at Computex 2019

At Computex 2019, we spotted three new socket LGA2066 motherboards from GIGABYTE, and several other manufacturers. At its Computex 2019 keynote, Intel announced that in Q3 2019, the company is launching new Core X series HEDT processor models "for creators." When combined with the handful new LGA2066 motherboard models we've spotted, it becomes highly likely that the processors Intel is launching this Fall could be LGA2066-compatible. Without further ado, the X299G Aorus Master, the X299G Aorus Xtreme Waterforce, and the X299G Designare 10G.

The X299G Aorus Master is different from the X299 Aorus Master launched last November, and the X299G Designare 10G is different from the X299 Designare EX launched way back in 2017. The X299G Aorus Xtreme Waterforce is the first "Xtreme" sub-branded LGA2066 product. What's common to these three boards is out-of-the-box support for the upcoming HEDT processor models, besides 9th generation "Skylake-X" Refresh processors, and the original "Skylake-X" chips.

ADATA XPG Battlecruiser and Invader Cases Pictured

It's not just PC power-supplies, ADATA is also taking a swing at the premium gaming case market with two new XPG branded ATX mid-tower cases, the XPG Battlecruiser and the XPG Invader. The Battlecruisier is clearly the more airy and 'revealing' of the two, with 4 mm-thick tempered glass making up the front, top, and left-side panels, large intake vents for the front fans, and a horizontal partition that can be collapsed in two parts for extra room to put your DIY liquid cooling components. The case has room for motherboards as long as E-ATX, add-on cards up to 40 cm in length, and CPU coolers up to 17.5 cm in height. There are 7 expansion slots located conventionally, and two vertical slots so you can show off your graphics card better. Six 2.5-inch and three 3.5-inch drive mounts complete its storage area, while you get room for 360 mm (or smaller) radiators along the front and top panels. The front-panel I/O includes a USB type-C, which should be the hallmark of any good case launched after 2017.

The XPG Invader is the more compact case of the two, and has a more restrained styling. It comes in black and white+black color options. You only get tempered glass along the right-side panel, with the front being shrouded in metal, with side-vents for the intake fans. The top panel has a grille with a detachable magnetized dust filter. The motherboard tray has room for ATX (and smaller) motherboards, add-on cards up to 40 cm in length, and CPU coolers up to 17 cm in height. Four 2.5-inch and two 3.5-inch bays make up the storage area. Ventilation includes three 120 mm intakes, two 120 mm top exhausts, and a 120 mm rear exhausts. Accordingly, you can mount 360 mm x 120 mm radiators up front, and 240 mm radiators up top. Front-panel I/O includes USB 3.0 and HDA, but no type-C ports here.

ASUS Announces 240 Hz Portable ROG Monitor

With an increasing number of "gamers on the go" today, we are getting more gaming products tailored specifically to them. Laptops, portable keyboards, and even portable monitors. However, ASUS wanted to change that with their launch of a new ROG portable monitor.

At Computex, ASUS has announced a new addition to its portable monitor family, this time under their famous ROG branding. The new ROG Strix XG17, as it is called, appears to be a dream come true for every gamer on the go. It features a 1080p 240 Hz display packed in a 17-inch body made to fit in any bag that is able to carry a 17-inch laptop. It incorporates adaptive sync technology so you will not have to worry about torn frames. The response time is pretty low as well at only 3 ms. You can drive it from any micro HDMI or USB-C DisplayPort cable. It can be powered from the same USB-C DisplayPort cable you use for video, or from the internal battery which is able to handle up to three hours of usage on its own. No information yet on retain availability or pricing, but we look forward to checking it out more sooner than later.

Dell Ends up Leaking Mobile GTX 1660 Ti Trying to Refute RTX 2050 "Typo"

Dell inadvertently confirmed that a mobile version of the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti graphics processor is in the works and coming to one of its G5 15 laptop models. The best part? The company was refuting the leak of another unannounced product, the "RTX 2050. " Calling it a typo, the company in a pop-up message for its G5 15 variant configurator. Apparently there are two main variants of this notebook, one with USB-C that has Thunderbolt, USB 3.1, and DisplayPort wiring; and another variant with just USB-C with USB 3.1 and DisplayPort minus Thunderbolt.

The company originally mentioned that variants with RTX 2060 and above get Thunderbolt, while those with "RTX 2050" only get USB 3.1 and DisplayPort out of their USB-C ports. In its correction, the company replaced "RTX 2050" with "GTX 1660 Ti." What the webmasters don't know is that mobile GTX 1660 Ti is unannounced, and it's unlikely that Dell is using a desktop GTX 1660 Ti on a notebook of this form-factor (this isn't one of those Eurocom-made desktop-replacement monstrosities).

ASUS Intros GeForce RTX 2080 Dual EVO with Axial Tech Fans

ASUS today introduced the Dual GeForce RTX 2080 EVO series graphics cards, available in two variants based on factory-overclock. Positioned between its RTX 2080 Dual and RTX 2080 ROG Strix series, these cards are characterized by a unique 3-slot thick cooling solution that implements a pair of Axial Tech fans. These fans feature a barrier ring that runs along the periphery of the impeller to prevent lateral airflow, and guide all of it axially (downwards onto the heatsink). The card also features an idle fan-stop, which turns these fans off when the GPU temperature is below 55 °C.

The card draws power from a combination of 6-pin and 8-pin PCIe power connectors. Display outputs include three DisplayPort 1.4, an HDMI 2.0b, and a USB-C VirtualLink. As mentioned earlier, the card comes in two variants. The base variant "DUAL-RTX2080-8G-EVO" features NVIDIA-reference clock speeds of 1710 MHz GPU Boost, while the more premium "DUAL-RTX2080-A8G-EVO" comes with 1725 MHz GPU Boost. Memory frequency is untouched on both cards, at 14 Gbps (GDDR6-effective). The company didn't reveal pricing.

GIGABYTE Outs GeForce RTX 2070 Gaming OC White Graphics Card

GIGABYTE extended its all-white trim to its third graphics card from the RTX 20-series, the RTX 2070 Gaming OC White (model: GV-N2070GAMINGOC WHITE-8GC). This follows similar trims for the RTX 2060 Gaming OC Pro White and RTX 2070 Gaming OC Pro White. As with the others, the card's USP is its mostly-white cooler shroud with chrome inserts, and a matching white metal back-plate. Contrasting them are a trio of 90 mm matte-black fans with chrome hub stickers, and the black PCB carried over from the original Gaming OC series.

As with the RTX 2070 Gaming OC, this card offers a factory-overclock of 1725 MHz boost, compared to 1620 MHz reference. The memory is untouched at 14 Gbps (GDDR6-effective). The cooler offers 0 dBA mode (idle fan-stop). The card draws power from a combination of 8-pin and 6-pin PCIe power connectors. Display outputs include three DisplayPort 1.4, one HDMI 2.0b, and a USB-C VirtualLink. Based on the 12 nm "TU106" silicon, the GeForce RTX 2070 offers 2,304 CUDA cores, 288 tensor cores, 36 RT cores, 144 TMUs, 64 ROPs, and a 256-bit wide GDDR6 memory interface, holding 8 GB of memory. GIGABYTE is offering a unique 4-year warranty with this card, if you register your purchase with them.

LG to Launch New "Ultra" Monitor Lineup at CES 2019

LG at CES 2019 is set to announce two new monitors on its "Ultra" lineup, which includes the UltraWide and UltraGear product lines. The UltraWide is pretty self-explanatory, and will be populated by the 49WL95 monitor, a 49" IPS, dual QHD (5120 x 1440) resolution panel with a 32:9 aspect ratio (there's support for up to three PbP modes simultaneously, thus making this a triple monitor setup, should you so choose). 99% coverage of the sRGB color space ensures faithful color reproduction. There's also support for HDR10 content, though the typical brightness of the monitor stands at 350 nits (peak brightness not disclosed). Connectors stand at 1x USB-C, 2x HDMI 1x DP, and 4x USB 3.0.

The second monitor is on LGs UltraGear lineup. The 38GL950G features LG's Nano IPS technology and support for NVIDIA G-Sync and 144 Hz refresh rate. It has a 38" diagonal across a curved panel, a WQHD+ (3840 x 1600) resolution, and a more standard (or is that less wide?) 21:9 aspect ratio. A typical 450 nits brightness means this monitor also supports HDR content, and connectors include 1x HDMI, 1x DP, and 3x USB 3.0 (1 up / 2 down). If any of these monitor ticks your "I want it now" boxes, you might want to wait until CES for the actual announcement and availability info.
