While by no means perfect, the 1MORE Spearhead VRX is unquestionably an interesting addition to the high-end gaming headset market. It offers a unique design and utilizes a couple of innovative features. Some of these, such as the pinhole microphone, need to be taken back to the drawing board and redesigned, but the Waves Nx technology that enables 3D audio and head tracking is a complete success. The Spearhead VRX is the first gaming headset that uses it, and I honestly hope it won't be the last as it results in a believable and exciting surround sound experience in games, movies, and VR content alike.
The build quality of the Spearhead VRX is great too; 1MORE opted for a combination of stainless steel and rugged plastic. I found it very comfortable as well due to its well-adjusted clamping force and very soft ear cushions. Some of my gaming sessions lasted for over four hours, and not once did my ears become sore. They can certainly get warm, but that's something you simply have to deal with whenever you're using a headset with pleather ear cushions.
Implementing a pinhole microphone instead of a standard bendable microphone arm with a cardioid capsule was a brave, albeit unsuccessful experiment. Sure, the microphone quality is passable if you're only using it for chatting with your teammates, especially with the ENC feature turned on. However, when you're paying a full $200 for a gaming headset, you'll want it to be much, much better than just "passable". The competition offers some excellent microphones at this price point, and that's something 1MORE will have to tackle with their future products if they want to be a part of the elite.
I'll wrap up with a suggestion for 1MORE. They recently released a great pair of headphones called the
Triple Driver Over-Ear (our review is pending). Take those, slap on a good microphone, and get rid of the pointless RGB shenanigans—that's all you need to do to get a truly excellent gaming headset.
