When I had approached Alphacool about doing a review of the newly released Eisblock XPX Pro Aurora in the full brass version, I wasn't expecting to also receive this Eisblock XPX Aurora Edge. I have
previously reviewed the acrylic top version on another Intel CPU, so do read that article as this version with the full brass top still shares a lot in common. Indeed, that acrylic top version comes in a couple of different housing finishes while costing $78, to where most people should arguably just purchase it and call it a day. The "Aurora" in the product name is meant to represent Alphacool's integrated lighting support for its products which is not really a strong point on the full brass version. This newer block is better built and obviously costs more, simply because of the increased material costs involved, so you need to figure out whether you care more about having a light show or a more stealthy approach with a heavy block that can also take accidents better, in case you end up over-tightening fittings on the block. The full metal block is also more withstanding of testing conditions outside of PC DIY cooling, although there I'd argue the Eisblock XPX Pro makes more sense with its native HEDT/server platform support.
With the newer LGA 1700 platform, Alphacool decided to retrofit the older blocks rather than make a socket-specific version. This means you retain good CPU compatibility but potentially lose out on some performance. Installation can also be more of a pain compared to CPU-specific blocks we've seen recently, especially here with the more intricate procedure that will require your full attention. It's not the easiest thing in the world to get installed, but you do get the hang of it and I had a much easier time doing so for my second and third mounts as part of the thermal testing. Performance itself is middling but within error margins, so realistically it comes down to pricing again. Personally I'd go for the less-expensive acrylic top version but there's no denying that this variant helps fill the needs for those looking for a decent looking metal CPU block.
