Final Thoughts and Conclusion

  • The ASRock X99E-ITX/ac will be available for around US$299.
  • Huge compute functionality, small footprint
  • USB 3.1, PCIe x4 M.2, SATA Express all present
  • Very efficient VRM
  • Great provided fan control
  • Great audio performance
  • Wide-open BIOS ready for tweaking to the limit
  • Dual-phase DIMM VRM for high-density DIMMs in all slots at maximum speeds
  • Limited platform functionality—only two ram slots and one PCIe slot
  • Bundled heatsink only truly good for stock operation, and provided watercooling bracket only works with select coolers.
  • Wasn't a simple drop-in upgrade for other ASRock PC products.
The ASRock X99E-ITX/ac is a very different product from what I usually test. We normally find that board products try to make the best use of what the platforms offers, and add to it, rather than taking away from it and limiting options like the ASRock X99E-ITX/ac does by bringing an Intel X99 Express product to the mITX form factor. Yet although that is most definitely the case, this ASRock X99E-ITX/ac is adding the possibilities of 36 threads and DDR4, something nearly no other product can claim.

The design choices made in making this board are amazingly well balanced. Although we had to give up some functionality here, what remains is rock solid, and the inclusion of an X-OC Socket to place your 2011-3 CPU into ensures you'll get the best possible performance provided you have adequate cooling. The provided cooler is good, but not good enough to cover a fully OC'd 16-thread i7-5960X monster.

The software package appears to be a bit lean, as is the on-board accessories package. There are only a couple cables in the box, while the rest is comprised of functional hardware, but don't let that fool you. This tiny board definitely packs a big punch. Just bought an ASRock X99E-ITX/ac and need help setting it up? Let me know in the forums!
