Final Thoughts and Conclusion

  • The ASUS TUF Z390-Pro Gaming is available for US$169.99.
  • Fit and finish
  • Part of an easily matched theme
  • Exceptional BIOS
  • Great overclocking
  • No Wi-Fi
  • Software bloat
  • No USB Type-C
The ASUS TUF Z390-Pro Gaming is the first ASUS TUF product I have reviewed, and thus, it had an expectation to live up to. The aesthetic is exactly what I had hoped for: complex, well implemented, and not overstated. The TUF Gaming Alliance colors mesh together in a way I would not have believed possible if I had not experienced it. Obviously, no matter how well implemented, the black and yellow color scheme is not for everyone. If the theme speaks to you though, the wide reach of the TUF Alliance gives you nearly unprecedented choices for a fully curated build.

Out of the box, the ASUS TUF Z390-Pro Gaming performed excellently in most test environments and was rock solid throughout testing. That stability carried through in spades when it came time to run my overclocking tests. The ASUS TUF Z390-Pro Gaming put forward some of the highest CPU and memory clocks I have seen with my setup, and the process was simple and painless. ASUS still has the best BIOS in the industry, and I didn't even scratch the surface of the tweaking the ASUS TUF Z390-Pro Gaming is capable of.

The ASUS TUF Z390-Pro Gaming is not without compromise, though. The lack of integrated Wi-Fi is something potential buyers should keep in mind as wireless gaming is more common than ever these days. The rear I/O is also below average compared to other Z390 offerings I have looked at—most notably the lack of USB Type-C. A couple more USB ports in general wouldn't hurt either. There is an S/PDIF out port and two USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-A ports, so the basics are covered. The AI Suite 3 software, while heavily featured and well designed, is slower and more resource intensive than I would like, and I am not crazy about the Fan Xpert4 desktop overlay, though the Fan Xpert4 software itself is one of the best in the business.

So what it comes down to is that if you want a Z390 board with all the basic features, rock solid stability, and superior overclocking performance and like the easily matched TUF Gaming Alliance theme, the ASUS TUF Z390-Pro Gaming is a top-tier pick I would absolutely recommend.
