Asustor AS7004T Review

ADM's Important Settings & Options Part #2 »

Network Settings

Network settings are very important to NAS servers, and the AS7004T is no exception to the rule. These settings allow you to set the server name, which will identify the NAS to the network, default gateway, and all IP LAN port IDs. The AS7004T's two Ethernet ports can also be teamed to create a Link Aggregation interface for increased transfer speeds. You can also set the Wi-Fi dongle's properties here; that is, if you have one attached to the NAS.

Storage Manager

Storage Manager allows you to check or configure the volume(s) on the NAS, migrate a volume to a higher RAID level, or replace currently installed HDDs with higher capacity ones. You can also check the disks and create an iSCSI target and LUN. Using iSCSI will make the disks you have on your NAS appear as local disks on any of the client PCs; however, all data will be transferred to and from them over the network. LUN stands for Logical Unit Number: Numbered disk drives that the operating system of the client PC sees as volumes.

Access Control

The Access Control panel allows you to configure user- and group accounts, set domain users and groups, manage shared folders, and set application privileges. You can also set user access rights to various applications for individuals or groups here. You can, for instance, deny some users access to sensitive applications like Surveillance Center. Once those users log into ADM, the corresponding Surveillance Center icon won't appear anywhere.

Creating a shared folder in ADM is a piece of cake. The option to encrypt a folder is also a part of the settings above. ADM only supports folder encryption, not volume encryption. The ability to encrypt folders is usually preferable since it gives you more control over your encrypted content (users usually only want portions of their data encrypted, not the entire volume). However, we believe Asustor should offer volume encryption as well.

Services

This step allows you to enable some of the additional services ADM includes: Windows file service, Mac file service, NFS, FTP server, terminal service, etc. You should enable the terminal service if you are an advanced user and want to connect to the NAS through SSH.

App Central

You will find numerous interesting applications in App Central, all of which are easily installed onto the NAS. Asustor and its third party users and companies did a tremendous job with App Central, so there are currently numerous applications you can pick to install to your Asustor NAS server.

Backup & Restore

These options allows you to set up the two-way backup and restore feature of ADM. You can also configure the function of the USB button at the front here. The NAS can be used as a centralized backup server in a variety of ways:
  • Use the NAS as an FTP or Rsync server and back data up to it.
  • Use the built-in Rsync Backup function to pull data from other devices.
  • Use the built-in FTP Backup function to pull data from other devices.
  • Use Backup Plan to back a Windows PC or server up to the NAS.
You can also remotely replicate the NAS using the following methods:
  • Use Remote Sync to push data to an Rsync compatible server or another ASUSTOR NAS
  • Use FTP Backup to push data to an FTP server or another ASUSTOR NAS
  • Use Cloud Backup to push data to Amazon S3
Finally, there is Mission Mode. It provides two options you can use when configuring your backup jobs. You can have a job continuously attempt to connect for a specified period of time or specify the number of re-connection attempts in the event a connection doesn't take place.

System Info

The System Information application provides useful information about the NAS server's hardware model, its software version, network settings, and the present state of the system. It also displays information about online users and provides a useful log feature.

The Dr. Asustor app scans the NAS for possible problems and suggests appropriate solutions. We believe that it can be a very useful application for inexperienced users.
