Value and Conclusion

  • The AUKEY KM-G3 Keyboard is currently retailing for just under $60 on amazon.com.
  • Cheap
  • Outemu switches
  • No driver needed
  • FN keys give extra functionality
  • Good range of lighting options
  • Instructions seem to have been translated by Google Translate.
  • Feels a little light
  • No macro options and a limited lighting range due to lack of software
When AUKEY approached me and asked if I could look at a keyboard for them, I didn't really know what to expect. It took me a little while to realize who they were to start with, although after I had, I actually realized that I did own a couple of their products, a USB hub for my PC and a phone power pack. It was then I remembered that they are quite well known on Amazon. This keyboard is far better than I expected it to be; however, you can still tell it is a cheap board since it doesn't have a solid feel to it like some more expensive boards do, though the aluminum top plate does stop it from flexing.

I mentioned previously that I thought I had seen this keyboard before, and I have! It is a rebranded Motospeed Inflictor CK104. Although I have never used that board, I have seen some positive reviews on some of the custom keyboard forums I look at. The KM-G3 is nice to use; it is comfortable to type on and the switches feel very nice. They do feel a little different from Cherry MX switches, but not in a bad way, even though they look to have been made out of cheaper, thinner plastic and are certainly louder. I can't say how long these switches will last as this is the first time I have come across them in a review, but what I can say is that I have seen a lot of people mention them on keyboard enthusiast forums, and they are also sometimes available separately on Massdrop, which is usually a good sign.

The lighting options are very good, but as always with the lack of software, you are somewhat limited, which isn't going to be a problem for someone who is just wanting to try a mechanical keyboard. Let's face it, extensive customizable lighting is a nice luxury.

Overall, the keyboard really does surprise me for what it is since you do get a fully mechanical keyboard with quite a lot of features and plenty of lighting options for less than $60, and it doesn't feel as cheap as it is, being a very good entry level keyboard, although those worth twice the price are noticeably better. It is great for those who don't want to spend a fortune. After saying so, I think it is obvious that it is going to get our Great Value award; it really is a great value item, but as always, you get what you pay for. Don't expect a full software suite or an indestructible keyboard. If that is what you are after, spend a little extra.
