Value and Conclusion

  • The Cooler Master Masterbox Q500L clocks in at around US$60 excl. taxes.
  • Unique design with three perforated sides
  • Extremely compact, but can hold a full ATX board
  • No issues with installing long GPUs or 120 mm tower coolers
  • Built-in desktop mode
  • Dust filters on all three sides of the chassis
  • Freedom to install cooling and move the PSU bracket around slightly
  • I/O may be moved to any of the edges within the square chassis
  • Good storage options for a case of this size
  • You may install two 120 mm fans in the ceiling or floor of the case
  • Liquid-cooling enthusiasts can go for a 240 mm radiator in the ceiling
  • A third metal mesh cover for the best experience as a desktop would have been nice
  • Acrylic window vs. glass may put some people off
  • If you are not planning on using an ATX board, the Q300L offers more bang for your buck
I am always a fan of unique cases, especially if it is executed well and provides more than simple visual benefits. The Cooler Master Masterbox Q500L does achieve that with its perforated side panels, which allow for refreshing flexibility. The design is well executed with the magnetic covers, removable feet, and movable I/O panel as well.

The second element of the chassis is its ability to be used seamlessly as a desktop, which could make it even more interesting for those who want a living room PC. From a chassis design perspective, this works great as well due to the larger, rubber-equipped screws on the solid side panel, as they also function as perfect stand-offs in such a setup. The only tangible downside here is the fact that Cooler Master only included two metal mesh panels, while most users would have loved to make the third side look like the rest of the chassis as well.

Last but not least, the acrylic window may catch some by surprise for a $60 chassis as we have become spoiled by many other more traditional cases offering that mix of materials in a similar price range. In the end, this is just a cosmetic element, and with its unique aspects in mind, I see the price of the chassis as justified.

That said, Cooler Master has done well with the Masterbox Q500L, with its functionality and unique takes and features resulting in a fun and surprisingly capable and compact chassis.
