Software
The software, Cougar UIX™ System, is pretty intuitive and easy to use once you get the hang of it. It has a lot of customization options. You can create a number of different profiles and macros and can also import and export them if you want. All buttons can be remapped to the user's preferences. Just like with the Minos X5, this software has a rare macro function, as you can actually record mouse movement with it. I haven't seen this feature anywhere else, just with Cougar products. The Performance tab has the main sensor options, but you can also choose your language here.
The software requires 77.7 MB of disk space and consumes around 58 MB of memory while running in the background. If you feel like it, you can delete it after setting everything up because the mouse saves all settings to its 512 KB of on-board memory.
Lighting
There are a number of different lighting options to choose from, such as steady lighting, breathing, color cycle, and flow, which looks the best in my opinion. There are two different zones, so the lighting for the scroll wheel and the Cougar logo at the back can be set individually. You can also assign different lighting modes to different CPI steps. Of course, if you want, you can set the same CPI value to all of them and only change the lighting by pressing the CPI changer, or you can just turn the lighting off.
I made a video in order to demonstrate these effects (please note that my camera cannot quite convey how it looks in person):
