A Closer Look

Now that everything is unpacked it’s time to take a closer look at the dock. It is made of solid plastic and has a smooth white finish and a removable green stand. The stand also helps support a 3.5” HDD and contrasts nicely with the docking bay itself. You may remove the stand by simply pushing down on the plastic latch in the rear of the EZ-DOCK.

Another nice feature is that ICY DOCK provides you with a portable traveling pouch with cutouts at every port and switch on the dock so you can keep it in the protective traveling case without having to remove your 2.5” HDD. Plus by using the 2.0 USB Y cable you don’t even have to have an additional power supply. I also noticed that ICY DOCK thought of everything to make the product fast and efficient by providing a single port eSATA bracket in case you don’t already have the capabilities of an eSATA connection. The one thing which obviously does not fit is the green stand. ICY DOCK has obviously intended for that to remain at home on your desktop. It is nice to have the option of portability and the stability and accessibility with a stand at home.

Due to space constraints, the connectors are placed on both sides of the EZ-DOCK. On one side you have the eSATA connector right above the standard four pronged power plug. The other side holds a mini-USB connector, something you will find on most external 2.5 inch hard drive enclosures. The SATA interface is just what you would find in any external enclosure, but it is exposed to allow for easy exchange of the drive connected. In case you are wondering, the square button in the front is an on/off switch - perfect when not using the attached drive. There is a small yellow LED in the ICY DOCK logo, which lights up if the dock is turned on.

There is no reason for you to open up your EZ-DOCK, but we wanted to check what makes it tick. The bridge controller is manufactured by SunplusIT. According to their website it is a USB 2.0/eSATA to Serial ATA Bridge IC.
